423. To the Ashby Canal by Narrowboat - Part One

Please join us, as Sally and I set off on our Summer Cruise from Yelvertoft Marina on the Leicester Line Summit, to the Ashby Canal. In this episode, we pass down through Watford Locks, then shortly after, moor up for the day. The next day we cruise on and join the Grand Union Canal at Norton Junction, then go through Braunston Tunnel, beyond which, we arrive at Top Lock of the Braunston flight of six locks.

Hi Paul, Sally did a good job at Watford Locks but an even better one passing through the Braunston Flight, as for much of that she did it by herself. You’ll have an explanation of the bottom lock incident in the next episode. It was scary but we got over it quickly. All the best, cheers Alan🤠

Good afternoon Alan and Sally, oh my, how I wish we were back on our boat. We did exactly the same trip in 2019, and then went up to Graat Hayward and down the Staffs and Worcs, so this will bring back very happy memories. I thought Sally did exceptionally well in dealing with the locks. So sorry to see that there was obviously an incident at Braunston, really hope that it didn't frigten you both too much. Can't wait to see how your trip unfolds, and we'll thoroughly enjoy watching...🍷🍷

Evening Steve, that’s interesting, as I first did the Ashby in 2019. Sally was great with the locks and more so in the next episode, as some of the gates were heavy. In the next episode, I explain the serious incident we had in bottom lock. All the best 🥂

Alan, my wife and I went on PS WAVERLEY from Portsmouth to Swanage a couple of weeks ago, great trip, lots of good seating, reasonable food and drinks prices. Wonderful being able to stand by the steam engine and the paddle operating gear. Regards AJ

Great stuff Alan. Cliffhanger as well. Tbh All double locks scare me, I remember well the Braunston locks when I brought my boat through… it was late, dusk, and we were the only ones going through, I couldn’t believe how quickly my boat ended up diagonal in the pound, changing direction and banging left and right. I think I’d only ever want to do another double lock sharing the pound. Look forward to the next instalment. All the best to you, Sally and Reggie

Hi Chris, it seems from what you say, the boat hadn’t been secured to stop it from excessive movement. Braunston bottom lock was the very first lock I dealt with, when going upwards. Struggled to get out of the lock, as water leaking faster out of the bottom gates than it was being fed in. Next week I’ll explain what our scare was about. Best wishes, take care, Alan and Sally.

Hi Alan & Sally, Guess it’s heading into colder days now since you did this trip. I’ve just back from the top end as we call it - Darwin. 80% humidity and 35 - 40 most days. It was a killer the first two days. And you can’t stay inside a hotel room when you there for a holiday. Take care Kate ❤️❤️
