@@tomstrum6259 2 seater cobra can lug gear and accelerate with an under geared setup. Also, have high cruise speed at three grand and under, as well as high top speed, and power in turns. There is no reason for seven, or eight hundred hp, and is a different parts bracket for longevity. With engines, tune with car.

This car will strike the fear of God into you. People have forgotten about having the ability to take your breath away with G forces, and not just be a spectacle that sits in one place and inmolates the tires and all of the forces wasted.

I'm 70 now and when I was in high school in '71-'72, two of my neighbors had '63 Galaxie fastbacks with 427s in them. One, the XL, had a '65 (I think) side oiler swapped into it. Loved the sound. We called the difference between the engines side oiler and top oiler.

Sorry, no real Cobra came with power brakes. They have 4 wheel discs with Girling calipers, with a separate master cylinders and reservoirs for front and rear.. With a 289 weighing ~1,900 pounds and a 427 weighing 2,200 pounds, the manual brakes do require effort but they can haul you down from speed pretty quickly. I have two 427's and two 289's, I am pretty knowledgeable on the Cobra.

All Automotive 427 FE’s have cross-bolted mains. Performance wise, a center oiler and side oiler have the exact same potential. The side oiler was designed to make it live under extreme stress.

For an engine with a flat tappet (solid lifter) cam, I could not tell if it was that or hydraulic lifters, and I was listening for it. It is a high-quality build. Seems like the owner will not have to rely on high RPM to do the job

It don't matter if it's not a side Oiler it's a screamer I love it and 1968 my neighbor had a 427 Top Oiler he had it in a 49 International Pickup he shortened to pick up 17 in the rear frame he put a Ford 9 in it it had a top loader 4 speed yep it stood on the bumper no problem it was awesome I was 12 years old it was awesome great my mom was terrified I thought it was fun then I bought a motorcycle and she really freaked out have a great day Nick love the videos I'll keep watching and keeps me inspired I'm just old retired Gearhead have a great day

The linkage looks correct now. The original 427s were "top oiler" engines, because it gave oil to the cams first, then pumped oil to the bottom end. This was destructive in NASCAR, as the mains starved for oil at sustained high RPM. So, the next generation gave priority oiling to the mains, hence the capillary tubes visible in the casting. I've got two real deal 427 Cobras, both side oilers, one is a comp car and one a street car. The comp car is a single 4 barrel Lemans bowl race engine and street car has an R code dual quad similar to this one. Both like 36 degrees all in on timing, original 12.5/1 compression running 100 octane race fuel. The race engine made a staggering 553 HP on the dyno, two dual quad car made a monster 605 pounds of torque. Both were built by Keith Craft, both are basically all original. Keith told me the R code made more torque than any dual quad 427 he had ever built. A properly set up 427 can be a beast. The street car weighs 2,200 pounds and will blow the tires off in 4th gear at 55 mph, it can get sideways at will. Those vents on the back of the intake were notorious for dripping oil and making you think you had a weird leak. Those engines build a lot of crankcase pressure.

Correct on side oiler vs top/center oiler. I have one in a 63-1/2 Galaxie from my dad. It has restrictors in the top end to keep the oil to a minimum on the top end and keep oil down low. It was a band aid until Ford came out with the side oiler due to engines not surviving nascar races. Though the top/center oilers were still more durable than the Chevy counterparts. I also have two 69 Chris Craft 427’s. Really only good for the blocks and one crank.

@@dogsense3773 Wrong...67 Mustangs could come with a 427. In 67 it would have "medium riser heads" which will make more power than stock Edlebrock heads. Edelbrock are really a low riser or Cobra Jet head.....2.09 Intake valves as opposed to 2.19 Intake valves and a raised port..

Non - side oiler = "top oiler". The side oiler pumped oil to the crank first through a new cast in oil gallery on the side of the block not found in any other FE blocks, then the oil went to the camshaft. The top oiler pumped the oil to the camshaft first, from an oil gallery cast in the lifter valley like most other old Ford v-8's, then the crank. Sustained high rpm racing (NASCAR) the 427 Ford would have crankshaft rod and main bearing issues caused by insufficient oil supply. The side oiler fixed the problem, and was used in the 427 SOHC too. In street and drag racing, the top oiler worked well enough.

I don’t think this applies to the non ‘side oiler’ or ‘regular’ version of the 427. I actually had a 360 FE in my first pickup. 1973 F-100. I am somewhat familiar with this series of engines. (Although in no way am I an expert)

Most 427 s had screw in freeze plugs. That might be an early 406 they also had cross bolt mains. Ford did use 406 blocks as 427s in the beginning.

So I commented on part 1 about the oil leak and I'm back. My setup was an original Ford one. Same Holley carbs but mine were mounted normally, with the primaries in the front. I had the Ford air cleaner with the "Thunderbird 390" badge made into the ribs near the front. Original fuel log and linkages as well. I had that on a 390 in my '67 Fairlane GT with a toploader 4spd.. I had brake booster issues !! Unless you were totally off the throttle and downshifting, the pedal was hard as a rock. Had no vacuum gauge so can't tell you what it was, but definitely not enough ! Kinda surprised yours didn't make more power than it did, given the cam and heads. Glad you were able get the dyno back up relatively easily !

🇺🇸I still have my 427. I started saving for my first car when I was 12 yrs old, bought at 14, a 1967 Ford Fairlane with a 427 true “cross bolt main side oiler”. Back then it was big solid flat tappet cams that made me daydream in school and forced me to rush home (or skip class) and just start it and visibly watch the doors shake, that alone was all worth it, having not being able to drive yet. I pulled the motor all those years ago, l knew I had something REAL special, even at 14 lol. Those were the days!!!

500 Torque @ 3900 RPM is really good. For a street engine I always prefer the lower RPM Torque number since that's where the engine lives the vast majority of the time..

The 427 isn't the only ford engine to have cross bolted main bearing caps. The 406 also came that way. I don't know any tells on the 427/406 to let me know what I'm looking at other than the block/casting numbers. If anyone else knows a tell I would like to know. Being a tri-power isn't a tell. The 390 and 406 could both be had with a tri-power. I'm not sure if the 406 tri-power intake could bolt up to the 427 but I'm not sure about that either. The 406 and 427 are so rare I've not had much exposure to them. One of the coolest things I have been exposed to was a 1962 4 door galaxy with a 4 speed and a 406 tri-power. I'm sure it was a very low production number but my buddy was using it as his daily driver. Cars are meant to be driven.

To fix casting porosity, put a shop vacuum on the oil filler, spray brake clean on the porous spot, wait 10 minutes for the brake clean to dry and then apply high temp super glue while under vacuum.

That engine block is known as "Top Oiler", just like all the other FE engine blocks 352, 390, 428, etc. because when you pull off the intake manifold, you'll see the main oil feed galley running down the lifter valley and feeding off from there. Just fine for street or drag racing. The Side Oiler was born out of the need to keep the crank oiled during NASCAR racing where the engine was subjected to 6000+ RPMs for long periods of time. The Top Oiler would not keep up with the supply demands in those conditions.

I love the FE, those heads are likely out of the box and the valve springs are weak for this cam. My 390FE revs cleanly to 6500 and makes 488 lbs ft and 509 hp. But even then, in a Cobra this is perfect. The sweet spot! It makes all of the power it needs.

The Ford factory replacement blocks were side oiler, crossbolted, screw in plugs, and 390 bore.... Boreable to 427+ size. Buddy had one he built as a 390 and put 3 x 2s on it and factory cast iron tube looking headers.

I heard that Shelby shopped many cobras with a 428 because they were cheaper, but if a customer complained he would swap it out for the 427 side oiler. Makes me wonder what this really is.

Actually all street cobras got the 428 but all the competition cobras got the side oiler.I am sure at least a few 428 engines were changed out for the 427 but you had to be really clued in back then to know shelby was using the 428 blocks in the regular cobra.

@@jimmillet1442 I was a child then so I don't have 1st hand knowledge but what I read was they were advertised to have the 427 side oiler but was soon switched to the cheaper 428 that was a mild engine compared to the 427. I'm sure some buyers were clueless and some thought bigger is better, but if I was buying an exotic car I'd want the exotic motor in it, not a mild engine with less HP. Imagine opening the hood on your Countach and seeing a SBC motor. On the other hand there are a lot of Jaguars driving around with a SBC motor and it'd prefer that to the XJ6 motor. They can be a money pit without the coolness factor of the V12 engine. A bigger WTF is a VW beetle motor in a Porsche.

Ford sold service replace parts for every part for at least 10 years after the last model year for the parts. The last year for the 427 was 1968, so a replacement cylinder block was available at least through 1978. The last year for the 428 was 1970, so a replacement cylinder block was available through 1980. Not all service replacement parts were exact matches for the original parts. In the 1970's the service replacement 427 block was made to replace both the solid lifter and hydraulic lifter versions. It came with at least one soft plug and drilling instructions for the lifter conversion. It was a high nickel side oiler block. The 1970's 428 service replacement block was a 391 truck engine block, that was very heavy and had an external oil passage. It was bored to the 428 bore and the external oil passage was plugged.

The sideoiler had better oiling for high RPM racing ! The early 427 had the same oil system as the 390 engine. I took my 390 Galaxie to 6500 on a regular basis with no problems!

That seal is a mechanical seal, very common in industrial pumps. They are usually very durable unless there is particulate in the water. Their weakness is the sealing parts are brittle. Nick's bad seal was probably dropped sometime between manufacture and installation. This started a crack, the results of which you can see in the picture of the broken seal.

Considering you're running through mufflers, all those numbers are good. I drove a street version original with a tunnel ram and it hit 140mph easy on the street. It was for sale for $3,500. but I was 17 and broke...would have killed me anyway😂

Carb linkage was originally progressive. That's why the throttle levers are on the passenger side. To bring the front carb primaries closer to the center of the engine. The front one is the one you cruse on.

That will be a very nice 427 for the street in a light Cobra! 3.50 rear gear is all you will need.

that crazy it worth more as a early non side - oiler The 427 V8 was introduced in 1963 as a "top-oiler", changed to a side-oiler in 1965. Despite the "427" designation, its true displacement was 425.98 cu in (6,981 cc)

427 are 426 428 are 427 452 are the powerhouses.

If it shipped with the 428 tuned the way they did, it was the same power but more streetable with the Mississippi River torque band and hp where you could get a without straining the engine. I am reasonably sure that this is either a 428 CJ or a 427 with a cam ground to pull like one. That one will hook up and you will have your hands full.. Sweet engine!

Maybe the owner calls it a side oiler because oil was leaking down the sides of the block ?

All I know is my built 71 Charger R/T 440 4spd w/456posi rears has thee most beat downs victory’s of Chevys 454, Olds 455 , Buicks 455,Firebird 455, Roarrunner dual carbs w/o engine hood … etc etc = $300/month ins premiums in early 80s back then , of course I brought it to the streets .. insurance companies made me do it.
