Besides appreciation, comments help with the YT algorithm, I'm told.
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I guess the idea is that comments show interaction rather than apathy. This gives the algorithm the idea that others might also not be apathetic, so it starts to recommend this out. Like a rolling snow ball, it either gathers weight or just disappears into the snow.

@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 3 жыл бұрын
Underground with wood (cabins underground) have been done (Laura Ingram's little house on the prairie was actually one of these), but most don't last 20 years. There is a book called "The 50$ (& up) underground house book" by Mike Oehler, but he admits the house didn't survive through his book tour. But that was all back before we had such good rubber linings, treated wood, etc.

@@SimonHomeintheEarththanks for the info. I was planning on doing icf walls. Big timber framed trusses. Decking/sheathing. Metal roof. Then pour concrete over that? I probably should have it engineered... That's expensive but safety is nice...

Please do video where you perform various tasks with Kubota... i always wondered why you didn't buy skid steer etc., even you had so much earth moving work to be done.
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 3 жыл бұрын
I did have a skid steer for the first few years. It was a 65 HP john deer and it was awesome. Much much stronger than the Kubota. But it tore up the ground when it moved around, even with tracks. I only sold it once we were in the phase where cleaning up the landscaping every time I took it out was too much hassle.

As a retired remodeler I can say very safely, there is no such thing as too much paranoia about waterproofing windows and doors. One little bastard pinhole can ruin your year....and these days the necessary infinite R value requirements just increase the difficulty and paranoia. Good for you not going the sheet metal will fix everything route...

Fyi... A angle grinder with a cutting wheel goes through lathe like a hot knife through butter.
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 3 жыл бұрын
We found the snips to be better than the grinder in most cases (faster, easier and much less dangerous). The exception is if the lath is already screwed down and we need to trim off something too close to the screws. We also found that some shaped snips work better than others. We have about 5 pairs of snips, each a bit different, and everyone wants to use the same pair.

How long do you expect this home to last? 100 years? 200 years? 300 years? My amateur guess is about 200 years but honestly it wouldn't surprise me if the structure lasts 500+ years
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 3 жыл бұрын
The structure is very strong and durable, so a very long time. The harder question is how long the systems will last. For instance the pex tubing in the floors... They are made of plastic and not in the sunshine, but no one really knows how long PEX tubes last. Or maybe the tubes will be fine, but the the metal crimp rings or brass connectors will fail. Or maybe the first failure will be the screws that hold the lath and stucco to the outside of this wall. They are triple coated outdoor deck screws in treated wood, but they won't last forever. At some point, maintenance will need to be done on those systems. However, Europe has homes that are much more difficult to retrofit for modern living and they still manage, so whoever has this place when the systems start to fail will probably manage also.

I am a simulation engineer, so I was usually sitting by a computer all the time. At the start of this project my hands were pretty soft and my biggest muscle was my mouse clicking muscle (on my right hand, just to the right of my thumb). Now my hands are pretty tough and nicked up. I lost 2 inches of my waste and gained >20 lb and feel healthier than I have ever been. I'll occasionally get a nick from the lath, but I have petty much learned to avoid it. ;)

@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 3 жыл бұрын
Work sites are dangerous places and she has actually had a few close calls. One time, one of the boys dropped a Jig saw on her head from 10 ft up, gashed her pretty bad. Another time she tripped on some uneven ground and nearly impaled herself on a piece of rebar. I don't think she came close to falling in the window though, so that's good ;).
