This video continues the process of insulation and waterproofing up an over the roof of the mud room and guest room.
Its my first timelapse upload in 2 years, but I plan to try and be a bit more regular again.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate a youtuber that doesn't care about the algorithm! It's like you're bring us back to the early days. Good detail about how to waterproof. You are a trooper, and you give proper respect to your troop. I think you are a golden resorce for our world, in addition to whatever other constraints require your time. I am giddy to see you back here, but I would suffer an arbitrary absence, because it it KZbin, and You don't owe us shit.

I care a little ;) Actually, just commenting and then my replying to the comment increases the probability that the algorithm will bother to show the video to others. If I get more subscribers, I have a greater chance of getting a book published when this is all over. So I care a little. If you go back far enough in my vids, I didn't bother asking people to engage (the videos were just for my distant friends and family to see), but then someone suggested that I should at least mention it, and the video analytics showed that simply suggesting people subscribe did actually have a fairly dramatic increase on the number of people who did... So, now I try to work it in somewhere, even if it isn't until the end when most people have dropped off anyway. ;)

@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth Жыл бұрын
I was also hoping this one would ALSO be about saving money... We did save a lot of money on the build by doing it ourselves. But the main point was to save money on operating costs in terms of reduced heating and cooling and reduced maintenance. I am sure there were easier ways to save money without going earth sheltered, but I didn't see it as a tradeoff. I wanted the two to go together.
@CharlesRyann
@CharlesRyann Жыл бұрын
@@SimonHomeintheEarth I would like to build something similar....except way less complex.....more like the an extended version of the garage you built "Quonset hut" (steel instead of the thin material) built with open floor plan.....except the inside being high ceilings and design similar to early english gothic arch style in churches with steel since im a welder.....this will likely never happen for me money wise. However your home is an amazing build. The earth sheltered would do good in Texas where Im from, cooling homes can prove difficult these days with the earth warming stuff...

I hope the trumpet practice is paying off. Short exercises through the day is the really the best way to progress on a brass instrument. Also, I appreciate the jazz music you have backing your narration. As for the building method, have you experimented with FRP bar (fiberglass re-bar)? You can get structural curves which are easy to tie wire mesh to.
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth Жыл бұрын
Yea, he is really good about practicing the trumpet and piano and more. He won the state competition for U-18 high school kids and we are going to nationals in August to compete against the other state champs. As for fiberglass rebar, no, but I have used bassalt rebar (bought a bundle) and it is good for some things, but not for others because it doesn't hold its shape like steel does. You basically need something else to hold the shape and then you tie the basalt (or fiberglass) to that.

with the posts could you saw a very small gap into the posts all around and tuck waterproofing into the gap to stop water that rus down in its tracks?
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth Жыл бұрын
It is sealed against the posts now. The issue is that the posts are wood and even treated wood will eventually fail. For instance, at least a couple of the posts have cracked along their natural grain lines. I sorted out the issue by injecting liquid nails into the cracks, but its not ideal. If I could go back, I would have used some sort of galvanized steel or aluminum post bracket that I could seal against and then easily replace the posts if they ever rotted. The only reason I can relax about it for now is that the posts are attached to the outside of the wall (see a couple videos back) and any water that does get inside is still outside the house and would just run down to the french drain at the footings. But if I ever need to replace those, it will be a serious hassle and I'll need to get creative.

If we had deep pockets, we'd pay someone else to do the work. I guess its all relative, but we are building this for a small fraction of the cost of a normal house. How much per square foot do you think is expensive? We are about half the national average.

Yea, I knew there would be a few of those comments. Whenever I put my videos together, I see all the silly things I do and the controversial ones and just wonder how many people will notice. In this case, I think I was right about which way to go with the insulation (economically speaking), but I do regret putting in those fence posts like that. Probably a few other mistakes that I won't point out myself. ;)
