based on my calculations, this round delivers similar Jules on target to 30-30. Which is pretty amazing for a pistol cartidge. I love .44 because of the options you get with the ammo. You can run em real hot, and use everything from a fast, zippy 160 round, to a ground pounding 300 grain round. It all depends on what you need it to do, and it does it.

Firstly, thank you for another excellent video always such a pleasure. I'm a Brit but I've hunted Stag, Wild Boar and small game across the UK and Europe in my time plus 20 years in the military. For Buffalo or Bear I'd take the copper slug but for everything else I'd use the Hornady rounds which performed incredibly well. The Winchester is a thing of beauty and mechanical precision and a joy to see used well. I did cringe to watch you "plink" with rounds at $2.50 a shot but it is essential to know where a round prints on target. Kind regards from the UK 🇬🇧🏴

Thanks! I appreciate the input from a different geopolitical perspective. I think we share the same take away and that is that for some game animals these Hi-Tech bullets would be appropriate. Mostly where deeper penetration would be a plus. And yes I did go through all 40 rounds that Tom bought to make this video at a cost of $2.50 a round. But in addition to the two boxes that Tom bought me, I bought a box myself and will not be planking with them. They will be reserved for future hunting scenarios😄

The Hornaday gets the nod for me, the unobtainium is great for those who might need to penetrate body armor or are expecting to have a gunfight where their target is protected. However for me like was mentioned the standard 240 gn weight avoids having sight changes and standardization of a fairly afordable round to load makes the choice between them easy for me. Thank you for yet another great video, and thanks Tom for the Ammo donation.

I’m in Idaho, I usually carry a Glock 29 with 140gr Underwood Xtreme P’s, but certain months its a 629 plus a Henry Big Boy X loaded with a alternating mix of 240gr Xtreme P’s and 180gr XTP JHP’s. I’ve shot them both at all kinds of stuff, there’s really no stopping the solid copper, and the JHP’s hit juicy stuff like a train. For center fire I buy only underwood.. same price (for the normal stuff) as the big box stores, they hit advertised speeds, top notch finishes and crimping, and its dropped at my door for free ($200+ ships free). Plus they have great 25% off sales sometimes.

I know some channels have tested pistol bullets from Lehigh Defense extensively in gel, and it seems the claim to fame with the fluted nose is the ability to produce equal or greater permanent wounding after blasting through a hard barrier, as compared to the best hollow point bullets on the market. Didn't seem to matter much what that hard barrier was because the Lehigh round would penetrate gel virtually the same depth every time. Barriers included drywall, sheet metal, auto glass, plywood.

Appreciate your testing, very informative. After seeing the gel block jump with the 240 I am liking the factory 240 loads. Plus considering the price and the unobtainableness of the other stuff…well…. Plus you have to re-zero your rifle, then zero back when you are out of the few rounds you are able to scrounge up. I am sticking with factory 240 magnum loads, proven performance and better availability and price. Not to mention that you still have no idea how accurate the Underwoods are in your rifle and only Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos could afford to do any serious accuracy testing. Thanks!

My familiarity with the 44 MAG cartridge began 50 years ago with a RUGER semi auto carbine fitted with a 4X Redfield scope. Remington factory soft tip ammo accounted for more than a few big whitetails when I was stationed in Michigan with USAF. Typical accuracy at 100 yards produces three inch clusters which snobs would say is awful but I managed to shoot into the chest organs of broadside deer with no problem. Thanks for your review.

Gotta love innovation when it comes to bullet design. But for all the “latest and greatest”, there’s been relatively little change in metallic cartridge design since the advent of smokeless powder. I also agree with y'all on your thinking. Sometimes it seems that they aren't only chasing the latest and greatest, but their tails as well. When my kids and grandkids were growing up, I taught them how to harvest cottontail rabbits with short heavy sticks and rocks, down in the south Texas brush country, to conserve ammo or just to make covert kills in a survival situation. The fps, fpe, and BC were all dependent on the heft and throwing velocity, and shape of the projectile. They learned well.

Hi, George. I really like the Xtreme series of ammo, people still aren't aware of just how good it really is on a wide scale (of people, that is). Even the often pooh-poohed .380 is brought up to 9mm effectiveness. I, personally like my little, .380 pocket rocket (Keltec P38T) because it's so small and light (and yes, reliable... I've had zero issues) and it hides anywhere and you forget it's on your ankle or in a pocket. I'd like to see all the people who say .380 is garbage" stand in a line in front of me and catch one in the chest, then be reinterviewed with the same question... Oh, wait... They wouldn't be able to answer. I just wonder, will they make it in .35 Rem!?? (It's me again, Margaret). 😉

Hello George! Interesting video. I think after seeing your tests, I might opt to stick with the 240gr XTP. It's wound channel didn't extend as long as the 160gr Lehigh bullet, but at 9" of main wound channel I think that's right on the money for deer and similar when you consider how deep the vitals are on the average deer with a broadside shot. The Lehigh bullets might be a better choice for tougher animals like a good sized oinker though with the deeper overall penetration and longer albeit a bit narrow permanent wound channel. This is what's so cool about the modern era of powder and bullet technology, you can tune your ammo for almost any purpose...when you can find components! Lol! Carry on George, thank you for the vid. I'd love to see some of your testing on other popular lever rifle rounds like 45-70, 38-55, maybe even 375 Winchester, and of course the old tried and true 30-30 and 32 Win Spl.

It appears the X bullet penetrates more, but it doesn't expand. It's a solid. What you see in the gel is "fluid hydraulic effect" left behind in the medium. Whether or not that increases wounding is debatable. I will add that some have expressed concern that the X bullet deflects more easily compared to traditional bullet design/construction.
@TargetSuite3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. [If you're talkin about deflecting inside the animal then my experience in ballistic gel has been that the Lehigh defense bullets track pretty true. The worst performer when it comes to staying in the ballistic gel has always been the Hornady FTX bullets. But having never shot any game with one of their FTM bullets I can't speak to the effectiveness of the Lehigh Defense design. I hope to rectify that sometime in the future on a pig hunt😉

Good video George, as much as I like those Underwood bullets I think I have found that the XTP is still the round I will stick with. They might give you an edge at longer distances but if I'm shooting longer distances I'm either going to shoot higher or go with another caliber. It's hard to beat that XTP and besides I have everything down pat already when I shoot them. Now I might try some of them out in my S&W .44 with the 8 1/4" barrel. That stainless gun is a bad mutha at longer distances.
@TargetSuite3 жыл бұрын
They're definitely specially bullets and do have their place. I hope to ventilate a big boar with one soon.
@exothermal.sprocket3 жыл бұрын
I wonder what the in flight ballistics are with the Lehigh projectiles vs. the XTP hollow point. Gel is obviously a far more dense medium than the atmosphere but the effect is the same, as I'm sure the air pressures around those flutes create some interesting laminar drag compared to the smooth curve of the XTP nose. Wonder if that can be quantified somehow with the Lab Radar with extensive testing. Did you see a dramatic fall off of velocity as compared to more conventional jacketed bullets, TS?
@44hawk282 жыл бұрын
The velocities maybe up but that would cause the bullet actually print low not high. And I've loaded 180 grain hollow points in my seven and a half inch super Blackhawks that have gone out the barrel at over 1700 ft per second. And won't over penetrate like those things will do, and are known to do.

Usually heavier or slower bullets will print higher out to 100, because the bullet will be in the barrel longer while the barrel is rising. Hand guns are worse. I seen those bullets shot in balistic gel they make the same wound channel size as hollow points.

I posted the wait in the video. I think it was 203gr. I didn't measure diameter of it it was around 700 caliber

Blue goo? Fun video George! Good shooting. Recoil doesn’t look bad at all. Which of the two would you use for deer and hogs?
@TargetSuite3 жыл бұрын
I would definitely use the conventional bullet for deer. For big tough Hogs, the Underwood Ammo Xtreme Hunter offers adequate energy transfer and better penetration. I think I would lean towards that one
@dogbone13583 жыл бұрын
@@TargetSuite Amazing difference in expansion between the two boolits. Understand your decision to use the Hornady on deer and Lehigh on hogs. Good luck if and when the time comes. Until next time.

Well looking at the comparison looks like they both have weakness and strong points. But for availability and having them both I'll go with xtp or speer or hp cast bullet. I will say in my experience it's hard to beat a hard cast bullet for penetration . And in viewing another channel. If you cast with softer lead and powder coat the bullet you can get good expansion with no leading .
@TargetSuite3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Larry. As another commenter said having a good jacketed bullet and a good hard cast bullet just about covers it all.

I think the flutes slow the bullets down to much For long Range shots, and likewise they do create more damage in the gel than hollowpoints so obviously there is more resistance there in the air and the gel,
@TargetSuite Жыл бұрын
Good point. I think the biggest factor is the weight. For a 45 caliber bullet this is extremely light at only 160 grains. So, low cross-sectional density is going to Rob the most velocity
@michaelguerin4618 Жыл бұрын
With ( JHP ) you want you're velocity at impact to be 1,200fps to 1,400fps or it will just pancake and you will only get half the penetration , at close Range you could use 405gr from the 444 marlin to lower the velocity and get even more penetration because of the heavier Hollow point bullets, you want to keep the bullets shaped like a Mushroom, if it pancakes you're velocity is to high, or needs to be used at a longer distance where the velocity is down to 1,200 to 1,400 fps ,IF your going for just a 100yards and you have the power use heavier bullets
@TargetSuite Жыл бұрын
Good thoughts. Of course this 160 grain bullet that I was featuring in this video is solid copper and will not deform at any reasonable velocity.
@michaelguerin4618 Жыл бұрын
@TargetSuite it would be interesting to see what a custom made light weight Hard cast Hollow point could do with high velocity ,because the soft stuff is only good for low velocity,
@michaelguerin4618 Жыл бұрын
Maybe you could take some JHPs pull them put them in an oven heat them up then quench them but putting them right from the oven to a pale of water, then reload them,

It really is a nice chronograph. It gives you so much information. If you open up the raw data it's actually recording velocity about every 3 feet along the way. And it gives an indication when the return signal is starting to degrade so that you know when you can no longer trust the velocity readings. Of course all that technology comes at a price.
@paulstan98283 жыл бұрын
@@TargetSuite Really interesting. Amazing how it can pick up on something so small and moving so fast. I think it would be worth the extra cost.

If you or anyone has any experience, looking for imput on the sights. I have a Henry 3030, my question is do you like that Marble Bullseye sight that sits farther down the barrel (has more range of view) or a Skinner Peep sight that sits up closer to your eye. On top of that, I'm also thinking of getting a KNS Crosshair Front Site to pair with one or the other. Any imput if appreciated thanks!

It is expensive stuff and not what I would call Mainstream. But as I said in another comment if you are hunting large, tough pigs with a pistol caliber carbine, a premium ammo like this from Underwood Ammo is a good choice.

@aaronwilcox6417 Жыл бұрын
What barrel lengths do you prefer on the pistol cal leveractions 16" or 20"? That Hornady looks like it did an really great job for an more conventional bullet.
@TargetSuite Жыл бұрын
For me, a 20-in barrel just seems right. But my daughter prefers a 16 inch barrel. I think that has to do with the lower Barrel weight.
