@@ToolsandTargets I remembered that longer barrels mean more friction, and that means softer lead. Bullets that are slower out of pistols are going to be harder when they find their target, so less deformation and mushrooming. I think it's fully half of the equation. Keep up the good work, Sir. True, but it still did a nice job as far as damage and penetration. So as a defensive round in states where semi-auto rifles are banned, it would have still been adequate. That being said, .357 SP rounds are definitely nicer, but I could see where someone concerned with over-penetration would perhaps want to go with a .38 Special round.

Very good video! And yes, I was not surprised a bit. The 180 44Mag is not designed for that velocity. Knew it was going to come apart. Unless going to a 240gr JSP, they're likely to come apart. One of the reasons I sold my 44Mag levergun. The 357Mag and the 38hp, well, I expected both to do well. One reason why I cast a 160gr Keith SWC HP for both. Brutal on the hogs and coyotes that roam around my woods. Only thing meaner is my Henry Big Boy in 45 Colt. A 255gr cast SWC from a 20" barrel is a genuine hoss! This test reminded me why . 38 Special and . 357 mag are really among the most useful ever invented. You could head for the woods with a . 38 Spec revolver and a . 357 carbine and never skip a beat for defense or food in most places. And also rarely need full power mag ammo either.

Nice test to perform! I agree with your assessment of all three rounds. The one that surprised me the most was the .44 Magnum. It hit the gel block with incredible force. Yet the depth was so shallow. While the .38 Special gets considerably less boost in performance compared to the magnums, I've noticed that(at least in standard pressure rounds) they are incredibly quiet. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your tests like this with the lever action .357 Mag.

Been looking for this test, seems like a soft point is the optimal hunting cartridge for 357 rifle. Great expansion and penetration. Would be curious how PMC stacks up against Federal or Remington in a soft point. I was a little surprised at the velocity of the PMC 357 158 gr, thought it would be a little higher. 20" barrel might actually be slowing it down a little, 16 - 17 inches seems to be the optimal length for velocity.

Not surprised on thst 185 grain 44 magnum bullet. It was far to light and traveling way to fast out of a carbine length barrel. It is better suited to pistol length barrels. If you using a 44 magnum out of a rifle barrel, you need at least a 240 grain or heavier bullet. That should reduce the velocity a good deal and give better performance out of tour rifle carbine.

@leonhart24522 жыл бұрын
Generally going from a revolver to a rifle gains from 200 - 400 fps. The lower power cartridges on the lower side of the scale. On the 357 158 gr load as most such loads are designed to get maximum penetration out of handguns. In rifles you will get less penetration with more expansion. The 38 lead load, most factory loads use to hard an alloy. I cast my own out of nearly pure lead just a touch of tin to get good fill out in the mold and get expansion similar to the rifle out of a 4 in barrel. Out of a rifle I cut ccow 50/50 with pure lead. This gets good expansion with good penetration. Good for short range, 75 yards or so on deer. For longer ranges I load the same bullet in 357 brass for around 1800 fps. Good to about 150 yds.

Both the .357 and the .38+P performed excellently. Goes to show that the .357 can be a good short-range hunting round and the .38+P can be a good defense round at shorter ranges. I have a 20" Henry All Weather 357 and I load a 358-158-RF Lee powder coated bullet and a slow pistol powder like H110, Ramshot Enforcer and I just started experimenting with Power Pro 300 MP. I'm seeing over 1750fps from them, 38 Special loaded with Ramshot Silhouette and those same bullets will give you 1200fps. It's all about powder burn speed and having enough barrel although it seems like from my testing 20" is the limit. I smacked a whitetail a couple years ago with the Henry from 60 yards with a 158gr Sierra soft point hit high on the shoulder. Bullet mushrooming was impressive and the deer was DRT. IMHO 100 yards might be the practical limit for hunting but you talk about cheap fun, it doesn't get any better loaded with a cast lead bullet or cheap FMJ.

.38 Special ammo isn't likely or usually loaded with powders that continue to respond to added barrel length after about 16" inches quite like magnum ammo is. If you were loading your own however, there are powders that would give you a little more velocity potential out of longer barrels. Probably squeak another 50 to 75 FPS out of a +P 158 and still be "normal" for +P pressure. Something a Buffalo Bore or similar would do. Essentially getting low end mag revolver performance by using . 38 Special +P ammo in a carbine.

Hornady has the right idea, offering XTP Mag bullets for use in higher velocity application (lever guns, .460 S&W Mag, etc), but so far they haven't added the magnum XTP option to .44 caliber or .357 caliber, only .452 and .500 calibers. The XTP Mag bullet is supposed to be much tougher to deal with higher velocity impacts. Lesser bullets typically blow to bits.

As a defensive round in states where semi-auto rifles are banned, the .38 Special JHP round would be quite adequate. That being said, .357 SP rounds are definitely nicer, but I could see where someone concerned with over-penetration would perhaps want to go with a .38 Special round. People forget that bullets react different in wet material (like living tissue) versus hard material (wood, drywall, aluminum siding, etc...). People forget that SP and JHP bullets react differently in wet targets (living tissue) compared to hard materials like those used in home construction. As such, despite similar penetration levels in ballistics gel between the .38 SPC JHP round and the .357 magnum SP round, there's little doubt that the .357 magnum round would penetrate a lot more walls than than the slower .38 SPC round. This is a valid concern if you don't want rounds ending up in a neighbor's house. For hunting small to medium size game (like hogs and deer) however, there's no doubt that the .357 magnum SP round would be excellent as long as shot placement was good.

The performance of the 44 mag would definitely make me reconsider using it from a rifle for hunting a bonded bullet would definitely perform better in 44mag , But for home defense oh yeah. As for the 357 mag I would definitely use it for hunting.

Agreed

Results would be drastically different with other bullet weights or configuration. Hunters use heavy, hard cast, solid bullets. 44 mags have a reputation as being good for bear within 100yds with the right load.

I really think that 38 special load would make a good low recoil ,low muzzle blast Load "as it is subsonic" for a 38 special/357 magnum Carbine or Rifle load ,I think I am going to use that in my Rossi 92 38Special/357 Magnum with 16 inch barrel. I am also interested in Ammo for 44 Special ammo for use in another Rossi 92 44/Special/44 Magnum I have that has a 16 inch barrel. I am interested in 44 Special ammo that has simililar characteristic's to the 38 special load tested in this video , Subsonic from a 16 inch barrel for low blast and recoil and a hollowpoint for Expansion. Does not even have to be a Semiwadcutter Lead hollowpoint, just a bullet that will expand and be subsonic for low recoil and blast. Do you know of any 44 special ammo with those attributes ? Thank you much

Hey Tool. I’m going to be using my Henry with Lever Revolution ammo for deer season this year. Any chance you can do a gel test?

I got some pmc 357mag jhp in 150gr, haven't gave them a shot yet, box of 50 and have nickel plating casing and it looks like they may just match the bronze Pmc you're testing.. very impressive. Your video gave great detail and we enjoyed your personality along with it! You have some nice Henry's too. Mine is the big boy All Weather in 357mag/.38spl and doing research on the .38. Need to cycle +p in 158gr or more for the Henry and that made better choices for us to make sure we got the right ammo for wife n boys to fire out. Thank you and have fun making more videos! Try another ammo test with federal premium hammerdown 357mag in 170gr bhp? Would love to see a gel test on them as well please.. we bought 2 boxes and waiting for them in the mail. Be safe and walk well.

Thank you sir! Absolutely love these Henry rifles. I actually want to add an all-weather to my collection in .45 Colt since I don't have a .45 Colt or all-weather yet. Figured I would kill two birds with one stone. I'll see if I can dig up some .357 Hammer Down. I know I have some in .327 mag but can't remember what all .357 I do have.😎👍

@Tools&Targets I watch a lot of ammunition videos and we like yours! Clean fun, great details and no cussing! Most young adults testing ammo all have potty mouths and turns us off quickly.. we are trying to teach our boys about our guns and safety, but cannot let them watch a young buck shoot his pie hole off and disrupts the teaching. Thanks if you do decide to try out them hammerdowns.. Haven't seen much of being tested like you do. Ya them all weather's are some sweet rifles.. I'll be looking into a 30/30 for the Elk hunts and probably pass down the 357mag to the boys but we wanna make they use sound ammo...

That 38 special is probably a little faster out of a 16" barrel, because it is running out of juice before it leaves a 20" barrel. All in all, a great video though!

They're never exactly the stated grain weight anyway, I'd bet those 357 and 38s didn't lose anything. Great video thanks!

Absolutely not surprised at all on any of your three loads tests. At rifle velocities in that 44 magnum 180 grain as exspected would come apart. That light weight bullet was designed for pistol velocities in shorter barrels at around 1300 to 1350 fps and not 1900 plus fps. A 240 or greater bullet in a 44 magnum rifle might perform better, get good penetration and hold together due to lower velocities.

I've personally saw the .44mag sjhp be devastating for anything inside of 125 yards or so. From a winchester trapper model! Also seen a big obese man(like around 500lbs) get shot 3 times with a 44mag from what i think was a 4in revolver 😮 Upper right shoulder area lower left back area and left hand. The guy lived!! Walked with a cane after and was missing most of his left hand!😢 The two spots on his back when they healed looked like a fist size chunk missing😮! I guess all the fat and then the short barrel. All because he threw a brick at another guys car😮😅🙄🙄💯💯💯 Love your vids man. Im in market for a 357 lever right now 😊
