Testing the difference between .44 Special and .45 ACP+P with both utilizing a 255 gr hard cast bullet. The .44 Special is a 255 gr Keith style semi-wadcutter rated at 1,000 FPS and the .45 ACP+P is a 255 gr flat nose bullet rated at 925 FPS. Testing in my standard Jug-or-Not ballistic test as well as a hard barrier wood penetration test. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

Thank you, and you all are appreciated. I sometimes have some of the younger crowd stopping by trolling me saying how my videos don't get a lot of views and list the reasons why i'm no good, or I get genuinely nice people saying the same thing about low views. But my followers are nice, they comment etc. What the naysayer's _don't_ see (that I see as only I can see my analytics) is that my audience will watch pretty much my entire video, no matter the video. That makes my watch duration literally 3-4 times longer than a lot of people's videos. So lets say I get 5,000 views, that's really 20,000 views worth of minutes compare to an average video on KZbin. That gives me the ability to keep making videos, which is great!

Sam, you are well spoken and actually show the difference between bullets and firearms. You put work and thought into what you do. Maybe it's not for everyone? Some people are just mean keyboard trolls who have never done much in life. They would be happy to watch machine guns destroy something all day long, with no analysis. All the best and stay well!

Sam . I was viewing the comments and read about the younger generation shooters. as a reloader of 42 years, more calibers and honest testing than I could remember can say a lot of them don’t know what there talking about. not trying to be mean or rude but always ready and willing to help them from get rid of the training wheels to become a rifleman. but like I was 42 years ago I didn’t know a drop in a bucket. after all these years I am a old dog that can learn new tricks. now disabled I have so much to offer a realize that my years may not be many more. with a treasure chest of knowledge and experience to share with outhers when I die it will die with me . iam not complaining iam joyful to see my blessed savior. but it saddens me so many want to shoot but not listen and learn. maybe I expect to much of people. Thank you. It's always a little weird for me to do these tests as I love how hollow points explode the bologna and stop short. It's more difficult to decipher a solid bullet and once the bullet gets to jug 5 and beyond the comparison/calibration to ballistic gel becomes inaccurate, but it's still fun to see what happens.

.44 Special 255 gr. LSWC @ 1000 MV is pretty much the infamous "Skeeter Load" that Skeeter Skelton himself concocted back in the 50's to use in his Model 24 for Police work when he as a Def County Sheriff. Developed with a similar mind-set as the .38 Super Police round, in that its easy on the shooter but hard on the intended victim. Legendary man/bear stopper round.

People won't like me saying this, but both of those loads would stop a grizzly if you put it in the right spot. Spine or brain pan even with these and he's stopping immediately. Elmer Keith said his working man's woods defense load was a 255gr hardcast at 950 fps, and he carried that load for plinking and even in areas where he knew a bear encounter might occur.

You spend a lot of time "on the streets" shooting people? I have been involved in a few law enforcement shootings. 15 124 grain 9mm Gold Dots in a magazine is absolutely better than 7 of any .45 acp load. Not gonna argue with you , your opinion is obviously based on the "yay America" patriotic bullshit instead of facts. .45 is good , 9mm is better. Thats because they ARE HARD CAST BULLETS. That's what they are designed to do. Abnormal penetration.. and your exactly right. Alaska style woods defense is what these guys are intended for.. alot of people can't go drop 1300 bucks on a nice 454 casull. And even more people don't feel great about the 5 round capacity associated with revolvers. This is an option to turn your daily carry gun into a decent woods gun . @@cirocundin nope not true, gonna have to stop you right there!!! the hardcast in a polygonal rifled barrel has been proven false over and over. that being said, you have to understand that hardcast and lead bullets are 2 different things entirely!!! a properly hardened hardcast will not lead a polygonal barrel, but it doesn't even matter, cause underwood runs theirs at a brinel hardness of 21, and anything over 18 is ok. also underwood does the hi-tech coating, and doubletap uses a gas check, and buffalo bore is very good about properly sizing their bullets as well as hardening them, I've shot underwood in a stock glock barrel, and been fine on many occasions, just clean it well and you'll be fine!!!

I cast and handload, and use a bullet for the 45 Colt in the ACP cartridge. It ends up 260 grains when cast from wheel weight alloy, and has a large .360" meplat (flat on the nose). That flat is what does the "work" in solids, and my loads chop nasty holes through stuff, even at only 900 FPS. The downside (and- I'm certain- the reason Underwood doesn't use one like it) is that it may not feed well in every 45 ACP pistol. With revolvers, one has a lot more leeway in bullet profile. This test is a good example of how bullets of similar diameter, weight, material,and velocity can give distinctly different performance on soft tissue just by virtue of that meplat.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 жыл бұрын
I have always been under the impression that the wide nose is considered a Keith style and makes a 158 gr a 170 gr, a 240 gr a 255 gr but the overall length of the bullet is the same as the 158 or 240 gr bullet, so you can load them with 158 gr or 240 gr charges. I am not an expert in that field but is this about right?
@noahmercy-mann4323
@noahmercy-mann4323 3 жыл бұрын
@@GunSam pretty much; cylindrical shape (as opposed to conical) of the nose and placement of the crimp groove...the diameter of the meplat is more or less a byproduct of that cylindrical nose shape. There are also LBT-style that aren't SWC that have large meplats and get a lot of bullet out of the case, and they are pretty much the ne plus ultra of cast bullets for hunting. The bullet I use in 45 ACP is actually a round-nose flat point like the Underwood 45 ACP, but the meplat on mine is much larger (it's the LEE PRECISION 452-255). it runs fine in several different firearms I've tried it in, but I'm sure there are some that would have issues feeding. If you handload, I could send you some of them, properly sized to .452" and lubed, along with some load data (from a manual so you could be confident in the source).

I have no idea. Probably as you say, oversight. Both are pretty similar. My _only_ thought on that, is maybe Underwood is trying to sell you on the .44 Mag ammo, as where typically in .45 ACP you aren't going up in power, as where marketing to guys like me who own .44 Mag revolvers but shoot .44 Special ammo, the Magnum is marketed as a big game round.

Great test and superb commenters. ... Back in the day, there weren't as many powders or powder companies available. Every powder has a bit of a different burning rate. ... Elmer Keith settled upon 2400 as the best powder for his .44s - at the time when he was a shooter. ... There are now powders available that can surpass 2400 in velocity with a similar pressure. ... One must be cautious about using heavy loads with standard, or magnum primers. A load that is maximum with a standard primer, can develop dangerously excessive pressure if a magnum primer is substituted. Beware!
