We install a new driver clutch on our 440cc Kawasaki Arctic Cat snowmobile engine and take the Murray Kilowatt for a ride! This 2 stroke go kart isn't blindingly fast, but it's definitely quick. The off road go kart was fast enough to flip when I went into a turn too fast! We still have a few kinks to work out, including the exhaust and gearing.
Thanks for Watching!

So waaaaay back in the day, when the briggs and stratton 5hp engine was the norm for a kart, I had a simple kart. Next to our house was a dirt road. I would go down the road, pitch the kart sideways into a powerslide, and go back up the road and do the same by the house. Over and over. lap after lap.. until one time.. just like you did there, it caught the edge of the tire and tipped. I also laughed and pushed it back up. Except the Briggs had the fuel tank on the motor. some fuel came out, touched the muffler.... pooft! kart on fire! Sprint back up the road.. whole time thinking, where is a fire extingusher?! Remember my dads boat has one. Jump up in his boat, grab it.... sprint back to the still burning kart.. and PUSSSSHTT put it out. Did the push of shame back to the house.... 1 carb rebuild later (burned out all the plastic parts including the choke, intake box, etc) and it was good as new.

lol @push of shame. man do I know that one. But Oh the memories, and the learning of physics and such the fun way. Good story, took me right back to an old dirt road with a Briggs singing its tune.. the 5hp that was always fast enough to tear something up, get you to a great adventure, or just feel the pure freedom that came from just a few sips of the big red jug. All depending on how deep you were gonna bury the throttle that day. Anything to do with a yard cart, even the push of shame.. is still a good time.

Fires are scary. We laugh at them on youtube. Once you have one of your very own its not so funny. I like the stock predator tank. Its way less likely to spill fuel all over when upside down. I like the dirtbike vents that have the check ball in them. And i like a good tight gasketed fuel cap. Yes i hate running out of vent when the power is wicked up and not enough vent. But i hate fires more. Also i like exhaust wrap. Alot. For leg burns and also less likely to light off from raw fuel on hot pipes.

That is probably the main factor in his flipping it. The tire is literally biting the ground and throwing the weight of the cart right over top of it if that makes sense. Kind of like when your running and your knee locks up.

I doubt that is the key. I would start with spring. If it’s building heat I would add weight but it’s not. It’s boggy because it’s got too much weight. So if it has a 200-320 spring in it. I would go up to say a 275-400 and see. That will gain you rpm across the entire range, remember the weights are fighting spring pressure. More here holds the weights longer. If you have not , I strongly suggest Olav Aaen clutch tuning handbook as reading. It will get you where you need to be trying to tune cvts

The two different gaped plugs are probably for the higher/colder climates and seemed to spin up the engine faster than the ones you guys put in.. in my opinion they should probably stay the same just replaced with new ones... Also the exhaust on a 2stroke engine is tuned for the back pressure and the exhaust gasses needed to make the engine run properly, and at peak performance. those factors put together is why its not beating the cross kart on the CAC GP. Thats also probably why the gearing seems sluggish. just my opinion.

The "plateau" in the Kawasaki 440 is real. They used to do the same thing when I ran them at Malibu Grand Prix. Same engine, looks like the same clutch, though we ran a 32mm Mikuni carb and a can exhaust. That plateau is the engine trying to wind up the clutch. The clutch you have on there is for a much heavier vehicle than the Murray, an Arctic Cat Sled. (By comparison the 'Virage' race car at MGP was 700lbs dry and usually carried 22 gallons of fuel) So you can either re-gear the secondary, or put different springs in your drive clutch that let it start spooling in sooner, and tighten up the belt for a lower "stall" rpm when it engages. I think I would actually try the latter first. Changing springs in the clutch is easier than redesigning your whole drive train.

@@doomman700 just because it's a 2 stroke doesn't mean the power band is ultra narrow. If it would push a snowmobile through knee high powder at 55 mph, a light kart is almost no load in comparison. These old sled motors are not spinning a ton of rpm, and make peak power around 6k.
@doomman700
@doomman700 4 жыл бұрын
Ryan Washenesky well consider I was around when they were racing 440 Kawasaki’s new, se ran mercs but had an invader. It was a liquid sled but it was factory 7800, tuned for 8200 because it had twin Aaen pipes. Now you point out less drag, yes cvt is a torque sensing unit and it needs to see proper loading. You want it to hit 6000 and creep upward. Don’t take my word call a clutching guru for help. I know nothing, I only put 3-4k miles a year on snowmobiles and have since the early 70’s. ✌️

From my little experience with two strokes back in the day, they rely heavily on the reflected reverse exhaust pulse created in the expansion chamber, which is why every cylinder has its own separate expansion chamber, your 2 into 1 (which is fine on a 4 stroke) will really mess with performance, put a couple of expansion chambers on that are the right size and I bet it will solve most of the probs.

I also grew up around these old arctic cat snowmobiles with Kawasaki engines. They definitely used to hit a power band and wind out pretty good. I know you guys are familiar with cold air intakes being that colder air is more dense. Like somebody mentioned I think that you are running rich because you don’t have cold air Running through the motor. Probably need to lean up the jetting. You can figure out how you’re running by running at different throttle positions like wide-open throttle and then just turn off the Killswitch. Take the plug out and look at the color that will tell you how your jetting is.... I think this was a good motor but some of those Kawasaki’s had a tendency to burn holes in the piston. And warmer weather you may want to consider a cooler plug. Always want to build a 440 go cart and you guys did it good job.

Exactly not a one size fits all by any means, and 90° bend straight out the port is terrible for the function of a expansion chamber..

Just changing the premix ratio won’t change your jetting enough to help. The needle clip position and jets will make a world of difference if the top end isn’t shot

Yeah for a engine that's probably jetted for 32F or below. I'd say lower the needle, lean it up a bit. (GUESSING)

yea i was thinking its in the carbs as well and my arctic cat 440s run dual carbs on both the regular and snopro fan variants. i was thinking they could pull a little more outta them swapping that single set up out for a dual set up and i was also a little concerned about the head gasket maybe leaking a bit it seems way under powered compared to what even my old 1996 z440 was and if im not mistaken they did reuse the head gaskets after checking out the inside of the engine but i couldnt remember which motor that was but can make a huge difference... no compression no power

James Dean I’ve never fooled with any snowmobile two strokes but I know on all of my 250 2T dirtbikes when they’re running like that it can only be a few things... ruling out the ignition system(besides the plugs lol) or powervalve(not sure if these have them if they do then that could explain why it’s no throttle then all of the sudden) it’s got to be the compression or bad carb settings. Altitude probably doesn’t effect them so I’d start with factory settings and go from there. Should be 32:1 premix if they’re wanting a safe ratio and won’t be on the pipe all the time.

If you have low in and high in carburetor adjustment leaning out until it just about quit smoking at an idle if you lose power that means that's your fuel is too rich trying to 50 to 1 mixture maybe better and if you can't get that smoke under control you may have a hurt engine also after a 5-10 minute run if your engine is below 200 degrees temperature you are too rich lean it up anything over 225 is starting to get hot

Two strokes really need a tuned exhaust for maximum horse power. I used to have a Yamaha YZ80 and when the exhaust broke it lost most of its power.

i remember flipping my Manco GoKart on grass in a soccer field....my parents were 200 yards away watching sitting by the car. I was maybe 13 years old and flipped over while going about 20mph with no seat belt. I was fine I had a cage and helmet and my head hit the foam covering the bars i hopped right out all at once and flipped it right side up before they could run over to me haha but my mom was so freaked out haha i was mildly freaked out but then bought a torque converter clutch and put a 10hp motor on it. Dad probably expected it and hopped it wouldnt flip haha good times.

The right expansion Chambers for that is critical I don't know if you know how they work they work by impulses back to the motor which pushes the first puff of gas back into the cylinder so it doesn't waste it, so if you don't have the right expansion the impulses are wrong and you're not gaining nothing you are losing power and a lot of it, you need one for each cylinder

Sounds lean; you can tell by the sound the engine is making on deceleration where it has a group of "hits" but they are spaced apart. Using less oil in the fuel makes the mixture slightly richer as more fuel passes through the main jet which is why that helped.

Dont change the exhaust. 2 strokes push the power band much higher in the rpm range and it will be dead lazy down low. 32 to 1 on the oil mix. And tune the carb to the power band not low speed. Gear change or shorter tire will probably help more than anything. Cheers have fun. !

That replacement primary clutch is a Comet 102C. those are pretty good primary clutches. Comet makes larger ones that one. if that one doesn't hold up. I always mix my fuel at 50:1 but that's on my snowmobiles. it might be different on a two stroke in warmer temperatures. it seems like it's to high geared. from what John said and it should launch much better.

Living in northern Canada, I grew up working on snow machines. Their 2 stroke engine power is very dependent on rpm. That’s why they have CTV drives. Most are tuned to provide max power at around 8000 rpm. A 45 hp engine running below 6000 rpm (this 440 seems to be spinning below that even) will only make a small fraction of its rated power. It’s all in the clutches... let that engine rev!

If you had crashed on any other surface you would be in a hospital having your leg put back together , foot/ arm restraints would be my first modification. 2 stroke tuning is an art and there are many good books about it ,,one can get for free from this old building called a libary , so I won't go on about it a lot. 30 yrs of playing with them one learns . The first thing I would check is the crank seals ,air leaking in will stop you from ever tuning it right. Just spray some wd 40 at them while it's running and see if it changes rpm. A engine this old I would be stunned if they don't leak. You will keep cracking exhaust if the whole thing is not mounted so it can move and flex. Yet ironically the manifold has to be mounted leak free for the first 2-3 inches. Sonic waves dictate this.. You have yet to play with the clutch weights , another imperfect world , to keep the engine running in it's optimum rev range , while trying to tune it for on off throttle response , you need the clutch to be in sync to keep the engine revving in it prime spot. Now in short 2 stroke motors don't like to be boged around ,they rather like to be revving at close to wide open all the time. When your looking at mixtures oil/fuel consider how long will it be at idle vs WOT vs cruising. Keeping in mind the engine is inefficient of burning the oil at low rpm. This causes oil to build up and foul spark plugs , build up behind rings , make hot spots in the cylinder leading to piston seizure .In this your asking for 20 :1 or 50: 1 is impossible to answer. Have fun blowing up 2strokes they always work best just before they blow up.
