I used the RCBS 45-250 mold (263gr) PCd with Herco powder, Starline Super brass. I had no pressure signs at 950-1000fps, but stopped testing there. Good 1911 load for deep woods -

I remember shooting mini 1911 chambered in 45 Winchester magnum. U talk about 45 ACP on steroids. We had a lar grizzly pistol at our shop that we used as a range gun. People would buy Samson ammunition for about $29 for 20 rounds back in 1990. This reminds me very much of that cartridge to a certain degree. Very good video John, I'm interested in doing this to one of my 1911's now. Thank you for sharing. Echo

Ive seen a couple of listings for 45 super pressures around 28,000 psi. I also contacted armscor about the rock island 45’s i own and they said their pistols should be fine for light use of the 45 super in their stock pistols.

70 Colt Gov model - Clark compensated barrel with fully supported chamber, 24 lb spring and shock buffer. Alliant Power Pistol has been my go to for years. I run 460 Rowland level loads using rifle primers. No issues. Converted this pistol 7 years ago. 900/1000 FT/LB possible with 185 & 230 grain loads. Purchased QuickLoad couple years ago and I do run loads approaching the 40K PSI chamber pressures of the 460 Rowland. 40K PSI loads propel 230 grn @ 1350 fps and 185's exceed 1550 fps. My standard range load is a 185 running about 1300 fps and recoil feels like +P loads in "normal" 1911 and generate about 27K PSI per QL modeling. DO NOT ATTEMPT to exceed 45 Super pressures/velocities without using a compensated barrel with a fully supported chamber. My first 460 Rowland pressure load was tested in Feb 2016. I do recommend rifle primers for loads exceeding 28,000psi.

Are you shooting your 45 Super rounds in a barrel chambered for 460 Rowland or did you have a compensated barrel chambered for 45 Super made ? And if so, is it a Clark made barrel with compensator ? Thank you much !!
@motorgearhead
@motorgearhead 2 жыл бұрын
@@paulhomsy2751 - Paul it is a compensated Clark customs barrel. I purchased it back in the 1990s (I think). I had the barrel before I ever heard of 45 super or 45 Rowland loads. It is chambered in 45acp. As you probably know, the Rowland & Super have the same overall length as standard 45acp. Commercially available Rowland loads use longer brass to prevent chambering in standard 45acp barrels even though the cartridge OAL is same.
@motorgearhead
@motorgearhead Жыл бұрын
@@paulhomsy2751- sorry just saw your question - the setup I’m shooting is a compensated barrel with a fully support chamber in 45ACP. This allows loads reaching Rowland performance. The only catch is you have to reload. However you can shoot the hottest 45 super loads without worry. The comp delays the barrel unlocking and in doing so allows chamber pressures to reduce to safe levels. Add a shock buffer and 22-24lb spring and your set for Rowland pressure levels.

I have a Glock 30SF lower and Glock 36 upper, a poor man's Glock 30S. I got a fully supported KKM 45 barrel for it. Then changed the spring and guide rod out with a 24# system, with 10% extra power mag springs, extra power striker spring, and reduced power trigger spring. It runs 45 Super without issue. Brass looks nice and pretty after use.

Wiki lists 45 super as 28,000 psi. Barrel upgrades are a good idea for the 1911. I’ve used both CFE pistol and VV 3n38 because those have been easier for me to find. I like the 3n38 better. I haven’t done as many reloads with the 45 super as with the 45auto and only load to 45 super to 45 auto max loads or a little above. I don’t know how much I’d worry about my pistol frame because the right recoil spring should help to prevent any damage. That being said it’s all off book trial with the proper spring. It would be cool to see someone measuring slide velocities with different weight springs.

Most new quality 1911s use a 1 piece stainless barrel, as opposed to the older, mil-spec 2 piece. I think a 1 piece stainless is fine. I also use a shok buff on the guide rod to minimize battering. Glad you are having good results with your 1911 and reloads! Hey, thanks for your comments and watching!

I experienced the same looking spent primers in the first group but got no pierced primers at all.Some of mine had the flattened primer indentation like yours. I'm not 100% sure in my case but the Shok buff was damaged upon cleaning after. I was thinking it was a result of the Shok Buff breaking up, and I suspect when it jammed in the guide rod end changed the timing of the slide? Not sure but a new shok buff with same loads all primers looked fine.

A heavier mainspring and flat bottom firing pin stop will do more for slowing the slide down than the heavier recoil spring will. Physics applies-the heavier the recoil spring-the higher the return velocity of the slide. Be very careful with bullet set out and set back. Set back will pop the pistol quicker than too much of slow powder.

Standard .45 ACP cases can hold Super pressures. Super cases have less capacity which increases the psi faster. Select the slower powders and you'll get the same ballistics with lower pressures. Old W630 with a cast 255 RF runs 960fps out of most 5" barrels. This is a max load in Speer #10 that used the Speer 260gr. JHP @ 890fps. and does not exceed 19,900 CUP (22,000PSI.) or standard SAAMI . Lead boolits develop less pressure than jacketed and powder burns more efficient resulting in a bump in velocity near 1,000fps. A 1 piece 416 stainless barrel, 24lb. recoil spring, shock buff, and a flat bottom firing pin stop in a full length guide rod 5" 1911 is all that's required.

Sir good video. Sir if you want max velocity then you should be using Hodgdon imr 800x powder. Power pistol is an excellent powder also. When using the 450 Smc brass it will give you many advantages over 45 Super brass because you can use a small rifle mag primer. This is a better cartridge than 10mm for hunting. I know personally pushing 255 gr 45 super to 1410-1470 velocity you start seeing primer spitting into the firing pin chamber and casing bulge but never a fractured 45 super barrel. Thanks! I am not a really a Glock guy, but shooting 45 Super out of a short grip, sub 4" barrel will be very snappy. Another option would be use 45 ACP+P loads, which are a bit slower but would not stress the gun as much. Buffalo Bore makes the Outdoorsman load, 250HC at 950fps. I can load out to 1.31in oal on my modded ETS mag.300g WFN Montanas, I get 1236 FPS. over 1000 ft lbs. pressure is around 50k, using 11,0g 800x and moly lube. 250's can get 1402 fps, 275's@1308 fps., Other guys get 185's@1700 fps. 335g@1100 fps 800 ft lbs. MY normal loads are toned down some, 275HS@1150 fps and 800 ft lbs, using 9.6g 800x and oal of 1.24. I would advice against using these 40-50k loads on stock barrels or newer Loneworlf past 2017, all are salt bath hardened and brittle and many blow up. One can easily get 1000 ft lbs from 185's and 200g bullets and be at 40k. psi with a 6 inch bbl. Where the 45 super shines is the heavy cast bullets, the 275's@1100 fps 700 ft lbs, still 40k psi., are plenty for bears and big hogs, will go through an elk stem to stern . go through 10+ water jugs. etc. keep up good videos

Well, probably have to replace the recoil spring with a heavier weight. Wolff Springs sells a kit that includes a recoil guide rod (needed) and new spring. Choose the weight, they are saying 17lb is standard, so 19lb sounds right. 45 Super will be pretty snappy out of that gun, also 45 Super brass is hard to find these days. Might be easier to load 45 auto +P, Hodgdon/ Accurate powder has plenty of data. Good luck, stay safe in loading and thanks for watching!

I have an m&p 45. Wolf makes a 22 and a 24lb Spring, guide rod, and +10% mag spring. My question is , if I switch my springs, is there any reason my m&p 45 would be unsafe to shoot super?? I have excellent case support with the factory barrel , much more than any of my Glocks and xds pistols. I would consider it as close to full chamber support as a ramped autopistol barrel can get. I haven't been able to find a shock buffer, but hell man I could damn near make one out of Teflon with a Dremel tool? Will I be safe shoot factory super with the recoil spring swap? I've heard of another guy doing this and outside the recoil spring swap, all he suggested was a stronger mag spring to keep up with the slide velocity because he had a few jams.. I also have a reloading setup, but my experience is very very meager. Will I be okay with just the recoil spring conversion. Do I have to have a buffer? Is the m&p any weaker than the Glock? I know my chamber support is better than Glock. My experience with both pistols tell me the m&p is much more solidly built than the Glock. The slide is thicker, heavier, and more robust. The frame rails are too, and also easily replaceable since they are made into the locking block and sear housing.. also the m&p has a stainless steel chassis molded into the polymer, vs Glock only has inserts. I'm pretty well versed with firearms themselves, and my gut tells me the m&p will handle anything the Glock will and maybe more. I guess I could buy some super brass and 45 components and work my way up too be safe. But I really don't have hundreds of dollars to buy brass, dies, powder ,bullets , and with my experience level , the margin of error is bigger.

Another question are you going to always use the expensive 45 super they're hard to find as well I wouldn't put in the 24 lb spring unless you want a dedicated 45 super only pistol otherwise if you want to shoot both put in the 22 lb that will let you occasionally shoot Soopers and plus powder p

You have to ask yourself do you want a dedicated 45 super only that's the only reason you want to put in a 24 lb spring and a Magazine spring if those are dedicated to the super you could put the spring in one magazine and Mark it with tape or write on it with a paint pen that will be your super only magazine also don't modify and put in shock Buffs that you made yourself

@@30-06john I won't be loading my own rounds, probably buying the underwood or some other brand of it. I just want a 230 grain to go alittttlle faster lol. I looked into some +p's as well. They hit the 950-975 mark. I wanna bump that up to about 1050-1100 for 230 grain.

1053 FPS with 9.0 of PP isn’t that low in velocity for 9.0 kinda think you should be over 1100 fps with this load.

Components and the gun makes a difference, but this loads is close to other load data I have seen. Thanks for watching!

You raised my eyebrow. When you filmed the reload the once fired brass was dented and you did NOT place it in the press properly. I'm NOT knocking you but I would rather you not get hurt. Watch the video closely. Good video. I subscribed.

Thanks for the concern! I did watch the video to see what I did. Yes, the case had a dent, in my experience, dents like that just resize out or are pushed out when the bullet is seated. As for placing the case in the press, I did see where the case was not fully in the shell holder and slid in as it was resized, happened again when I seated the bullet. Not really an issue, also I put each round in a loaded cartridge gauge to make sure it was correct. Hey, thanks again for the questions and watching!

Okay your smaller bore will have higher pressure. With your .45 Super (same case length size as .45acp) You Will have higher pressurez with 10mm, .40 Super, 9x25 Dillon, .357 Sig, or 9x19 ECT. If .45 super was going somewhere it would have yet it hasn't 10mm still holds it's own in that category. Now for a cartridge in which uses a similar case diameter from the same platform that didn't get more attention would the .40 Super.

Yeah, the 45 Super is a niche cartridge. But in the same way, the .40 Super, a bottle neck cartridge, was never going to become popular. Even the 357 Sig is fading away. Hey, thanks for the discussion and watching!

Nice little video. Not to argue but none of these rounds are anywhere close to a hot loaded 45 Colt. In a strong 45 Colt, it is no trick to surpass all but the stoutest + P 44 mag loads., and the 45 Colt loads are much stouter than any of these auto loads can manage. Around my area, pistols and revo's run the same price or slightly less for revo's. I think the popularity of the auto is simply a matter of hollywood always using them and many newer shooters really have no clue about a revo, or are wanting maximum mag capacity vs 6-7 shots from a revo.. I own 45 ACP's, 45 Super in my 4506 S&W for carry, and a 460 Rowland in a 1911. Too many 1911 barrels these days are throated too much for safe, continuous use with 45 Super even though Super brass is stronger. BTW- 45 Super is rated at 28K psi and Rowland at 39K. Another bit of info you might find interesting- I read on a gun board not long ago was that Super brass and Rowland brass are the same strength with the only difference being the length. Most of the time, what is posted on the net is more opinion than fact, but this was one time it is true. I called and talked to a man named Nate at Starline and he verified that it is indeed the same strength brass with only the length being different. Since both rounds have the same OAL, a guy needing 460 Rowland brass can safely use 45 Super brass if he can't find the Rowland brass, but not vica versa.. One other thing you may want to do is add a flat bottomed firing pin stop to your 1911. It slows slide speed and thus battering of the gun and lessens recoil slightly. get an oversized stop from EGW and fit it. It's easy to do and will also help your extractor throw your cases more uniformly. Did you use a new, stronger firing pin spring? If so, you may want to fit a new oversized firing pin from EGW (also easy to do and both will help eliminate the primer issues) and no, I am not in any way associated with that company, but they make good stuff and are one of the few sources to get all this stuff from.

Thanks! I agree that a 45 Colt can be loaded very hot in the correct gun. A 45 Super is similar to a 45 Colt loaded slightly above standard loads. Here in Alaska, revolvers are just about nonexistent and many people have switched to automatic pistols in 10MM. A segment are using the 45 Super and 460 Rowland. When I routinely replace the recoil spring, I replace the firing pin spring too in a 1911. Agree that EGW makes good stuff. Hey, thanks for the info and watching!
