Great video, I always wondered what the 480 would do in a rifle. I’m not surprised at the 480’s performance. When the 480 was introduced my shooting buddy I got some of the first SRH’s in Alaska and proceeded to work up loads with a variety of cast bulles from 275 to 460gr. I had a custom 460 gr WFN mold and worked up a load that clocked 1100 fps from a 7 1/2” barrel. I sent some to friend in the lower 48 to test at the Linebaugh institute. This was 20 odd years ago but as I recall it was one of the best performances in penetration that summer. The wet newsprint test was 48”, the bone test was 2” of bone and 12” of newsprint. As I recall only a few loads out penetrated it, and only by a few inches. I’m still convinced for a powerful round that most people can handle the recoil the 480 is the best, it kicks like a big 44. The 454, 475 and 500 have much more severe recoil. I also think if 400 gr @1200 fps isn’t enough, it’s time for a big rifle, not more speed or bullet weight in a handgun.

@@AlaskanBallistics my load work is scattered across various shooting forums. The 460 gr was really too much of a good thing. The cherry was designed for the 475 Linebaugh just sunk deeper in the mold and the desired weight was 450 gr. The bullet was so long if you seated to the canslure it swelled the case so I had to seat it to crimp into the first lube groove. I also got slightly sticky extraction which I have no desire for in a gun that could be used for a close encounter with Yogi bears angry cousin. I settled on 400 gr over 21 gr H-110 and a CCI 350. Back when I was shooting every week from a rest my SRH would group that load into 1” at 50 yds. I tested every mold between 390-410 gr I could buy or borrow and they all grouped 1” at 50 yds and brass fell out of the cylinder. The only molds I kept were one of the LEE 400 gr prototypes and a custom Mountain Mold that has an extra long nose so you can load to the same COAL as a 475 Linebaugh. My shooting buddy easily achieved 1350 fps, but the increase in recoil from the 1200 fps load was substantial and beyond what I can accurately shoot. If you handload I’ll be glad to send you some 275 gr SWC’s (I scaled up Elmer Keith’s classic SWC) and some 400 gr’s. I have an MP hollow point mold ( I think around 350 gr) I haven’t had time to cast yet and plan to get a custom 440 gr long nose mold made. I never did penetration tests back in the day and plan to do some extensive testing in the future. Cook Inlet silt is an endless supply of testing medium 😎. I did test a 400 gr hollow point mold in the silt near Hope and as I recall penetration was nearly 2 feet. The nose blew off and I was left with a 300 gr wad cutter

Yeah, I have to disagree with your assessment. The 454 Casull is 250 grain round with average over 2k fps average and the .480 is a 300 grain round and producing only 1600 fps average. The wound channel in the .454 Casull was more damage than the .480 even a blind person could see that. I’m not a fan of underwood ammo due to feed issues and you experience that and said it was a new pew problem but I have had several feed issues with underwood ammo and it’s wasn’t a new pew but it was a clean, semi clean and a well shot rifle. So with my assessment it’s the awkward tip of the underwood ammo but some people love the ammo.
@AlaskanBallistics3 ай бұрын
It was the cartridge overall length of the ammo not the bullet tip that caused the feeding issues.
