@@tuxedoautotransport you can get a shortblock 454 with stock parts for $1500 $1750 but you would probably be better off getting a 383 stroker because for the same price you will get forged everything and then the top end is cheaper and it weighs 100 pounds less.. but for cubic inches yeah you're looking at $2500 minimum for a 454 short block with forged everything and not build for a Van.

I have had the bug for the old rails a long time and it makes me so happy to see so many of them still available to race or as one off frames ready for a new life with a modern or vintage engine and trans .I'm 60 now and completely disabled I miss being able to go down the track but it's good to know so many of them are still out there ready for the next generation.

I realize I'm late to the party, and there are too many comments for me to read them all so forgive me if what I'm about to say is already in the record. I watched this and the Ford 460 video and noticed the 454 Chevy got the benefit of more generous cam timing. The 460 got a Comp 268 High Energy at 218 degrees intake/exhaust. The 454 got a Summit camshaft with 228/238 degrees intake/exhaust. This doesn't make for an even comparison.
@davescbradiorepair81955 жыл бұрын
Yes both Motors are awesome it just depends on how each is built. The Ford 460 will usually cost a little more to build but they are power houses as I do remember what Chandler's Bigfoot trucks did with them back in the day when they were up against the 454 Chevy.
@NobilityandLoyalty2 жыл бұрын
Cheaper to build until one wants to build a stroker. Fords can be stroked to 557 inches with a stock block with little to no machine work for clearance. The stock block will hold together in excess of 1200 horsepower, the stock crank up to 750 horsepower.

Go to Car-Parts and look for a 1996 to 2000 Vortech 7400 out of a pickup ($700), its got a factory roller cam. Or better still get one out of a Topkick or Kodiak medium duty truck, it will have a forged crank. Both will have four bolt mains. Starting with a roller cam engines saves money, that's money to spend on a good set of aluminum heads. Don't go to big on the heads, 335cc is almost too big, a little smaller is better in most cases. Comp Cams sells a series of Marine cams that fit a street engine to a tee, the lift is moderate, under .550, because BBC does not have the best geometry. This will last many years with excellent power.

I remember working on several Chevy 454s back in the 70s. The rocker studs used to loosen up so I tried different fixes; lok-tite and dimpling around the stud after tightening etc. But nothing seemed to work for very long, and after a while I decided the 454, with it's weak water pump and leaky gaskets, was not a very good engine. The 396/409 on the other hand....!
@bullettube98634 жыл бұрын
@Jack Russelle Lewis The 396 was actually a good engine, it produced 375hp in stock form but with the big 4bbrl carb and dual exhaust they could achieve 425. This made them less reliable, which is why GM came out with the 427. The 396 was an option for the corvettes, which made them very front heavy, but a real blast at drag strips. The 396/275hp engine was used in the GM 600-700-800 series trucks, it was powerful, reliable, and more economical to run and a good alternative to the 348. Where I worked, GM offered the Detroit Diesels in our trucks instead of the 396, but my boss decided to stick with the gas engines.
