@zippythechicken 5 жыл бұрын
@@tuxedoautotransport you can get a shortblock 454 with stock parts for $1500 $1750 but you would probably be better off getting a 383 stroker because for the same price you will get forged everything and then the top end is cheaper and it weighs 100 pounds less.. but for cubic inches yeah you're looking at $2500 minimum for a 454 short block with forged everything and not build for a Van.

Buck for buck, it's hard to beat a big block chevy. You could pull a 454 out an old motorhome you get off craigslist, drop it in some 60/70/80s beater, add a few bolt ons, and, *voila* you've got yourself a badass build on a budget.

Today on Powernation we take 2 big blocks, build them, and dyno them. Next week, we're taking them apart and putting better parts on for more power on the dyno. The week after that. I mean, its what you hoped college auto class was. Just engines and dyno runs.

Every few years I check the market on front engine vintage drag frames and built ready to run complete chassis and If you have the money and the balls to take one out to the local track there is no shortage of old and new frames and complete vintage builds to buy . I have had the bug for the old rails a long time and it makes me so happy to see so many of them still available to race or as one off frames ready for a new life with a modern or vintage engine and trans .I'm 60 now and completely disabled I miss being able to go down the track but it's good to know so many of them are still out there ready for the next generation.

I'm definitely a Ford guy. That being said I have huge respect for the Chevy engines. I kinda think Ford missed the boat and didn't keep the small and big block compatibility like Chevy did. It's cheaper to hot rod a Chevy. They did good on the engine engineering and some other stuff as well.

I realize I'm late to the party, and there are too many comments for me to read them all so forgive me if what I'm about to say is already in the record. I watched this and the Ford 460 video and noticed the 454 Chevy got the benefit of more generous cam timing. The 460 got a Comp 268 High Energy at 218 degrees intake/exhaust. The 454 got a Summit camshaft with 228/238 degrees intake/exhaust. This doesn't make for an even comparison.

Yes both Motors are awesome it just depends on how each is built. The Ford 460 will usually cost a little more to build but they are power houses as I do remember what Chandler's Bigfoot trucks did with them back in the day when they were up against the 454 Chevy.

Cheaper to build until one wants to build a stroker. Fords can be stroked to 557 inches with a stock block with little to no machine work for clearance. The stock block will hold together in excess of 1200 horsepower, the stock crank up to 750 horsepower.

In a bbc after market you can duplicate about any bore and stroke combination that Chrysler Ford Ponitac or Olds used So you got oval ports and rectangle. So see what chevy can do against the others with same bore and stroke combination? That would be a series we all would watch!

Go to Car-Parts and look for a 1996 to 2000 Vortech 7400 out of a pickup ($700), its got a factory roller cam. Or better still get one out of a Topkick or Kodiak medium duty truck, it will have a forged crank. Both will have four bolt mains. Starting with a roller cam engines saves money, that's money to spend on a good set of aluminum heads. Don't go to big on the heads, 335cc is almost too big, a little smaller is better in most cases. Comp Cams sells a series of Marine cams that fit a street engine to a tee, the lift is moderate, under .550, because BBC does not have the best geometry. This will last many years with excellent power.

I remember working on several Chevy 454s back in the 70s. The rocker studs used to loosen up so I tried different fixes; lok-tite and dimpling around the stud after tightening etc. But nothing seemed to work for very long, and after a while I decided the 454, with it's weak water pump and leaky gaskets, was not a very good engine. The 396/409 on the other hand....!
@bullettube9863
@bullettube9863 4 жыл бұрын
@Jack Russelle Lewis The 396 was actually a good engine, it produced 375hp in stock form but with the big 4bbrl carb and dual exhaust they could achieve 425. This made them less reliable, which is why GM came out with the 427. The 396 was an option for the corvettes, which made them very front heavy, but a real blast at drag strips. The 396/275hp engine was used in the GM 600-700-800 series trucks, it was powerful, reliable, and more economical to run and a good alternative to the 348. Where I worked, GM offered the Detroit Diesels in our trucks instead of the 396, but my boss decided to stick with the gas engines.

@@leroydog45 Ford built 427 SOHC Big Block back in 60's. It was a future engine that time. Except it wasn't EFI. Even still. Had power 535 to 550+ hp.

Would’ve been nice if you’d have given the 460 a fair shake on this one. Having a camshaft with 10 intake/20 exhaust degrees less duration and .046 thousandths less lift is hard to make up for. I’d say it would’ve been a lot closer if not hurt some feelings.

Why didn't they lube the bearing surfaces,and why did they bang the cam off the cam bearings like a cave man? Simple answer is because these are dumb ass overpaid college grads

Because this show is to plug parts for manufactures and generate youtube revenue. What they did there was definatly not hotrodding. Hell, it isn't even lowly ''checkbook hotrodding'' since the parts are free for the advertising.

How about building a small block Dodge 318ci la motor just like you did with the Fords and Chevrolet. I would really be interested in that. It would be a great compare it with the others.

Well I've have a old dodge truck. I rebuilt the 318 in it 23 years ago and it still runs great. Its barely over stock. I was wanting to see what the engine could actually do. The point is, nobody has ever done it for the viewers. P N should feel proud to be the first to show the 318ci LA motor in 3 different stages. It's one of the most reliable engines ever made ranking with the 302ci Ford.
