45562 'Alberta' Takes 12 Coaches Over Shap & The S&C !

LMS 'Alberta' AKA 45669 'Galatea' is pushed to it's limit for a class 6 Jubilee, as the locomotive was drafted in to haul the Cumbrian Mountain Express which has now gained a coach more due to COVID-19 and the need for social distancing on board. Given the terrain which the locomotive would face the decision to use a class six loco took many by surprise and make no doubt if it's fellow class 7 and class 8 stablemates, Scots Gaurdsman and British India Line were available I doubt we would of seen such scenes.
Just the four locations for this one, with Shap Wells covered twice as see the locomotive battling it's way to the Summit where it finally crested the summit some 21 minutes late with an Avanti Pendolino up it's rear ! With Shap out the way, attention turned to the S&C and Galatea's battle with the Long Drag. While the gradient is not as tough as Shap it's considerably longer and more grueling. Thankfully the locomotive and crew dug deep and the jubilee is seen roaring along firstly at Angerholme and then finally digging in deep at Ais Gill with just 1/4 of a mile left, a great performance from the Jubilee with it's overloaded train.
Once again the Northern Hills shows why it's the place to be for the best in steam locomotive action ! I hope you enjoy

Looking at the video a second time is enjoyable. To think the loco is hand fired IIRC is extraordinary: no mechanical stoker as on the North British-built Victorian Railways (Australia) R class locos. No black smoke either. The videography is superb, telling the complete story. No wind noise here: extremely competetent filming. Deserves 129,000 views by April 2022 not 12,900.

Excellent video. A gutsy performance from the "resurrected" 45562 and her crews. Perhaps the parts used from the original 45562 are giving a boost to 45699! She has now become a spirited performer on the Main Line.

Thoughts from the engine. "12 coaches over Shap? Are you mad, what do you think I am? A duchess?" then later on, "S & C..........12 coaches.......piece of cake" Absolutely brilliant filming, I don't think you will ever get anything better than that on the S&C. Green engine, 12 maroon coaches, and a storming run. As someone has said already, class 8's have gone slower up there.

Thanks Kenneth, I think Network Rail have a loadings guideline which in theory would prohibit this load but it's not really enforced by them.
