Being a former forest worker and tree trimmer, I knew from the start that nothing was going to travel through that moist black walnut laying long wise, except a strong hydraulic log splitter wedge. You should get the wood to a wood worker that can build some beautiful thing's out of that gorgeously figured strong wood. Especially the logs. Those loads are stout. Big bears, bison, moose and T Rex would be better choices. 👍

It depends on the ammo! Using a 250 grain cast bullet with a hot hand loading formula! Now that would go through that log!

I load my guide gun with Speer 400 grain jacketed soft points, it's accurate and pushing around 1850 fps. Fast enough for anything in North and South America and probably 3/4 of the game in Africa. Anything in a 45-70 pushing over 2000 fps is going to be punishing on both ends... 👍

Agreed. Used to fire Hornady 325gr FTX Leverevolution out of my Marlin 1895CB with 26" Octagon barrel. Round left the muzzle at about 2130fps, and yes it absolutely was punishing on both ends. It was fun to shoot at first cause of the novelty of a big ol round moving quick thumping the shoulder, but it didn't take long til it wasn't fun anymore. Love me some 45-70. Just 325gr FTX out of my particular rifle ain't much fun lol

The Elmer Kieth loads do 2000 fps. 53 grains of 3031 behind a 405 Gr. bullet. They are killers on both ends. Look up Elmer Kieth and this load for some interesting info. He was a big proponent of the 45-70

what I have discovered in years of hand loading 45-70, a 405 gr at 2050 doesn't do anything a 425 or 525 can't do at 1400-1600 fps. even the ballistic arc from the faster one isn't markedly flatter than the slower one - 100 yd zero and 1600 fps - 14" of holdover at 200 yards, and 9" of holdover at 2050. Any lead bullet pushed that hard needs to be gas checked, and while the 405 has a lot more energy, at practical distances, all of those wide meplat lead bullets will go straight through an animal, and probably not stop until it reaches the next zip code.

I used to shoot lots of logs and then split them with an axe to find the bullets. As I got older and smarter, I started using targets that were easier to evaluate, like shooting into a stack of boards or wet phonebooks taped together.I have shot most different kinds of 45-70, and after years of doing so, my go to hunting rounds are the Hornady LeverEvolution rounds (both 325gr. and 250gr. Monoflex) for elk, deer, black bear. If I am going for massive penetration, I shoot either the Buffalo Bore 350 jacketed or the 405 hard cast. These are my "go-to" rounds because they are the rounds that shoot the best out of my 1874 Sharps and my 1886 Deluxe.

Mike Klapperich 50. BMG FMJ can penetrate 96 inches into soft woods like pine. Hell I've heard stories of people shooting their M1 Garands through 2 1/2 feet cedar trees in WW2. AP .50 BMG would have no problem drilling a hole through that log.

Thanks for sharing, If it was Pine it would probably go 27” through it, but black walnut other than being a very expensive wood people pay big money for it even heard of people stealing a whole tree out of somebody’s yard and selling it for hundred thousand dollars, is super hard and would probably stop a bullet like that with an 8 inch or so

The problem is that you're shooting toward the y split in the branches. The wood is semi hardwood and green. The knarling and moisture would have absorbed the energy and directed the bullet downward. Try again on Maple or oak at least a year drying that way the impact won't be sloshed away.

During sight testing for the 1884 and up Trapdoor, the “weak sister” .45-70-500 from a 32” barrel cleanly and routinely holed pine 12x12 uprights. At up to 1400 yards… The original flip up sight on my made in 1886 Trapdoor rifle is calibrated to 1200 yards. The factory open irons are zeroed at 250yds. .45/70, like its larger 90/110 siblings, actually shoots best when loaded with 1.5F or 2F Swiss blackpowder. BPCR and BPCRS matches went back to requiring straight BP loads, accuracy and distance both improved. If you want old feel modern loads, .450 Marlin loaded with 535gr lrn or lfn…

I don't think it is a fair comparison regarding this log, vs other ones. That part of the tree trunk, begins to divide into a fork of the tree. So the grain of the tree you don't see is more dense and fibrous than a simple round where the grain is parallel. Certainly a more dense and deviant direction in the wood. So, Don't judge your self so harshly. :).

OK, you are trying to push a big slug threw a lot of hard wood. My guess, those bullets are 12 to 16 inches in. Get a bunch of 2x lumber a foot or so long and mount then a long board, a bunch is 30 boards, place them about a board thickness apart and see if if will go threw that. My 45-70 black powder loads with 550 grain soft lead will get into the 15th board, the range is 50 yards.

@Ray C. Seriously doubt more than 5 inches (if that) of penetration on hardwood. Your 15th fast growth very low density pine 2X lumber is no comparison to Black walnut hardwood slow growth density.

Probably only went in a couple inches. If that's true black walnut stop shooting it and don't burn it. You got a pile of money in that tree especially that y section. Thats big money to Craft suppliers plaque makers etc

You are Grossly Underestimating the Density of the wood. I don't believe if you cut a 10 inch piece that the 4570 would go through it. That big 36 inch log you would stop a .50 BMG. The only way it would come out is to veer off and come out the side. It would Definitely Not go through the whole length!

@@WHOTEEWHO these trees are more aggravation than anything, we have to keep them cut down away from our gardens, they have some kind of defense to keep stuff from growing near them. They suck to move because they hold so much water.

WHO_TEE_WHO I guess after watching tons of will this go through that vids, demo ranch, taflodermus, or however you spell it, and a few others, plus shooting .338 lapua and down at various materials, and climbing, disassembling trees for 28 yrs. , I just kinda got an idea of go no go on certain things. Your vid helps evaluate a lot of that too, I guess being lazy, I would rather watch, and let you do all the hard work, and prep, and editing. It is appreciated though.Lotsa fun to watch.

Good video, ill tell you from my testing with 45 70 if you want more power you increase weight but keep velocity the same. High speed causes deformation which causes resistance. This applies to most if not all calibers, but 45 70 for sure
