I'm a long-time user of the 45-70, including 8 years in Alaska. With a 405 gr jacketed soft point it will drop a bear/moose with no trouble at all. I have never used any of the lighter bullets or lever revolution type bullets. IMO, it was the bullet that essentially turned the 45-70 into a rather poor stopper in this case. Next time you go deer hunting with the 45-70 try the rifle using ammo with the good 'ol 405 gr bullet. Of course, a better lever gun for deer is one chambered in 30 WCF! ;)

Yes but he still got a complete pass through. If the round doesn't like shoulder then I'm guessing you mean it fragments on shoulder? I'm guessing sometimes the 4570 is simply going too slow to expand properly, especially on light bodied game. But, it did provide enough 'shock' to the CNS so much as it knocked the deer out for a bit. Maybe it did more damage than we think and the deer just bled out into his chest cavity. Judging by the exit, that bullet held together, which people seem to like. I'd prefer a bullet that really fragments easily if I was shooting 4570 to utilize it's energy.

Enjoyed your 45-70 hunt...excellent. I believe when you originally sited it in, you used the 250 grain monoflex lead free Hornady....not the 325 ftx. This particular load, which I use here in California exclusively, acts differently from the FTX which can shatter on bone. This load will be more of a penetrator.....great for large heavy beasts like elk etc. I'm disappointed that you somehow snaked that round away from lung and probably more in the shoulder....that's why it crawled away like it did with energy. You should have looked at the chest cavity wound when they took the meat down for the butcher. Anyways......wonderful programs you do.....I think a lot of us love 45-70....and would like to see more with differing ammo.

Great shot!! It was surprising that he made it that far and that the bullet went all the way through without leaving much of a blood trail. Looks like the 45-70 "jinx" is over. Ahhh, just got to the part of the video where you mention that you used the red tipped rounds and not the hollow points, that seems to explain why the round went through and possibly why the deer went that far. With that nice shot you made, those hollow points probably would have dropped him where he stood. Hopefully, next time you'll do your sighting in with hollow points for a hunting trip and we'll get to see just what they are capable of on the game. Congratulations !!!! It's always great to see other people with the same enthusiasm, no matter what age we get to be. Great job brother. God bless.

I think the scoped vs non-scoped argument is insane. It should really depend on what the rifle is used for. For example: if I’m out hunting with my .45-70, I want a scope all day long. If I’m carrying it in brown bear/grizz country as an “oh sh*t” bear gun, I want iron sights. In my experience, it’s much easier to quickly acquire a close up target (say, inside 20 yards) with iron sights than with a scope. At hunting ranges, though, a scope should be a no-brainer. It really all comes down to personal preference and, more importantly, PRACTICE. Gotta practice with whatever setup you’ve got to become proficient and be able to shoot accurately under pressure, whether it be buck fever or fighting off a bear. Personally, for the .45-70 lever guns in particular, I’m a firm believer in having a scope on a pic rail with backup iron sights, so that you can switch back and forth as needed. Just my two cents, though.

Congratulations, I do prefer a cartridge that has a better bullet design. The Leverevolution should perform better I would think. Bet on an Elk that would be awesome. The 45-70 does the job just not sure of the performance of the winchester HP. Makes me wonder if the bullet expands well. Can you do a gel test with the range you shot at?
@Joshb45703 жыл бұрын
Yes how did that deer get up? Would be interesting to know if a 405g would have broken the shoulder. Did we recover the bullet? The Leverevolution has a shorter shell too. More difficult to reload.

A lot of people don't like the faster cartridges because it destroys meat, but if you hit a deer in the vitals, the shock will just about liquify the organs. Destroys lungs and heart. The 45-70 might be better for bigger body animals like bear, elk, moose etc. The 45-70 bullet didn't look like it expanded a lot. A Speer Gold dot is a great bullet for midsize game at closer range. It really expands well. Exis is great meat. Congrats on a great deer.

Those are Hornady's LEVERevolution loads, they are all I'll hunt with in my 30-30 out here in MT. Best thing available to extend yer range and drop bigger animals. As others have said it looks like ya zeroed with a lighter grain load then used a heavier one to hunt with against a smaller critter than they're designed for. That fact it only went maybe 100yds ain't bad considering you used basically solid shot on it. Good hunt y'all had.

Every deer shot ran with no exit hole or blood trail. I did recover the deer. I found pieces of bullet fragments. I wouldn’t recommend using those loads on big game.
