Do not hesitate. Get one ASAP. The new Ruger Marlins should be available any minute now. I have a Henry H010 I would like to sell. It does not have the side loading gate. It's a great carbine, handy as all get out but I just don't care for it. I do covet my Marlin 1895, however.

I took a Marlin 1895 guide gun white tail hunting. I used the Hornady 325grn FTX round. I sighted in at 100yrds. I took a 150yrd shot on a big buck thinking there would be minimal drop. I was wrong. The shot dropped quite a bit and was not clean. I had to track the dear for about a mile. Barrel length, ammunition choice, and proper load testing at all ranges are critical. With a short barreled .45-70, 50yrds makes a surprising difference.
@NoSmileification
@NoSmileification 7 ай бұрын
Did you not practice with the round first? That's incredibly irresponsible and just plain stupid. Plug the round into any ballistic calculator and even with a 18 or 19" barrel it would only be roughly a 4" drop at 150 yard with a 100y zero. You should have made that shot with a little compensation. A 125y zero would have been point blank +/- 2.5" out to 150y, and a 150y zero would put you at 3.2" out to 175y. All better zeros than 100y.

My Marlin GBL is perfectly happy with the 325gr FTX. Roughly 1 to 1.5" groups at 100yds. My dad's early ported 1895G would clover leaf with them. I just found out the hard way not to leave a spotting scope on the bench when touching off a ported, short barreled 45-70.

Fort Scott, huh?! Yeah, this ammo’s not cheap. When you figure a “long shot” of 200 yards, a .625” group at 100 yards is necessary. I love that a 300 grain slug is hardly effected by a cross wind, and it will drop a bear or wolf in their tracks. Thanks for this video, cause I’m switching to Fort Scott 300 grains from now on. Thanks again, Bill from Minnesota.

Love that .45/70! Mine is a New England Firearms Handi-Rifle. I handload mine with the 300 grain jhp for hunting rounds and when I reached 2000 FPS with my handloads, the groups just magically fell into a cloverleaf pattern and to me, it’s still a mild pleasant load to shoot. All you gotta do is shoot that big bore a few times and see how effective it is on game and you’ll be hooked!

Rarely do you ever have to shoot more than once at a deer so that first shot you had with each type of ammo is your impact point as you will be shooting a cold gun. Until I had private property where i could take my time at the range i never realized just how much point of impact could change after just one shot. I have a 450 bushmaster that is dead on and i mean dead on at 100 yards on a cold shot but subsequent shots shifted 4 inches high and 3 inches left. Once i could wait 15 minutes between shots i could see that first shot was the correct shot and the rest were a warm barrel grouping. Just something to think about.

I've had this huge problem the last couple of months. Not until some weeks ago i figured out why my 26 inch CB wasn't accurate. I kept sending 5+ bullets through a smoking hot barrel. Mounting a peepsight on the receiver made it even worse. The deviation difference from heat is absolute massive... At 100 yards, it could be as much as half a yard, sometimes more. For my 1895 SBL, it shoots everything gladly, round after round. But the CB is sensitive, needs time to cool off. To make things worse, it only eats expensive ammo. It hates handloads no matter what powder or bullet weight. You have to sight in a rifle at the temperature it should be shot. More likely a cold barrel, maybe even a follow up shot. Let it cool, clean it out. Shoot as you would have when you are gonna hunt.

Hey brother it's more so of a cold bore shot than a fouling shot. The temperature of the barrel effects the impact of the shot by how tight the barrel grabs the projectile and with hot and cold it it expands and contracts. So the longer you weight between shots the impact will be different. So when you stop between different ammo types and talk then fire one it will hit in a different spot than the next 2or3 that are going down a hot barrel. Same thing of you set And shoot 50 rounds your barrel will get really hot and your groups will open up. Love the videos keep up the great work man love it!

That is why, when hand loading, you "work up" the load and try different brand and weight of powder. All the "factory" loads have differing powder, load wight, and bullet. Rifle barrels have a "vibration harmonics." and EVERY barrel is different. It is important to find a load that most closely matches the barrel.

I've been hunting with and reloading the 45-70 for 54+ years. A lot has changed in those years with bullet construction, powders, and primers. I hunt with a 2014 Marlin 1895 classic in 45-70 with a leupold 1x4 pig plex scope. My load from Barnes #3 is 250 grain copper HP, Accurate 1680, at 2,500 feet per second, and that is not the top load! It is point blank to 200 yards, my range is 200 yards. It makes things real dead fast. Like I said, lot has changed since I first fired the 45-70 in a Springfield trapdoor with 405 grain bullet at 1,500 feet per second.

Even with changes I still prefer to keep my 45-70 loads pretty classic not bp classic but Elmer Keith classic. Tried a lot of different bullet options but I still end up going to Hornady 350 and Remington 405s. For other calibers i definitely take advantage of new bullet construction.

A lot of people say putting a scope on a lever rifle takes away from the historical look. Personally I think if those who used them back in the 1800's had the technology and ability to mount a scope on their lever guns we would be looking at a different history.

They 100% had access to telescopic sights back in the late 1800s.

@@pappy374 Sure, but they were fragile, huge and expensive as hell. That's why the tang mounted peep sights were so popular. The tang sight offers 90% or more of the accuracy benefit of a telescopic sight, but were much cheaper and durable.

@@shockwave6213 Oh, sure. I'm just saying that people shouldn't say that lever guns shouldn't have a scope because it "wasn't historically accurate", because that is not correct. I say put whatever you want on whatever you want and have fun.

You didn’t answer my question in the last video, but answered it in this one. I was wondering why you didn’t like the performance of the Hornady FTX lever revolution and now I know why. I really appreciate that and I would love to get a similar 45-70. For hunting Ohio, and for hunting bear 🐻 and wild boar 🐗 wherever

Love the 45-70 just got a Henry and have been loading my own ammo , as the factory stuff is so expensive $40 + per 20. Haven’t tried groups yet just been running them over my chronograph got some mild and some nasty ones. I ordered some Skinner sights the semi buck horns are ok but my eyes aren’t what they used to be. I see the purpose of the scope but it just doesn’t look right on a lever gun and I don’t hunt so I’ll stick with something that looks a little more classic.

I have one scoped and one with aperture sights. Love them both. Have taken a number of pigs with the open sight gun. Longest shot 125 yards. Have not taken game with the scoped one. My advice would be try to mount your scope lower on the gun if able. That is the perfect scope for that gun, for a conventional mount. Something about that micro grove rifling is finicky. If I recall hard cast bullets give best accuracy. There’s a good reason why Ruger ditched that type of rifling.

It's not that people don't like the scope itself, it's that some don't like a scope on a lever action. This peeve is carried on by people that were blessed with good eyesight their entire life. The lever action purists that feel a scope on a lever action is like mustard on cereal. Fouling shots are for a recently cleaned barrel and yes, they are important, especially when testing expensive ammo for accuracy. Going forward I'd use the not-so-good-shooting ammo here for your "fouling' shots after cleaning your bore before a hunt. I'm more impressed with the newer Marlin's ability, made a believer out of me that this lever rifle can shoot. Good stuff WTW....thanks

WTW is your Marlin a microgroove barrel or is it one of the new ones with regular rifling? Mine is an older microgroove barrel and it shoots 330gr cast hollow points best.

Prefer the iron, can't argue the precision of scopes. If I need a quick shot with a follow up shot iron or low powered optics are the way to go. Leaning on iron sights. One long shot a high powered properly sighted optic. My limits on iron sights is about 300 yards at the extreme. Around 100 to 150 yards is about optimum.
