458 alleged fraudsters are trying to steal millions of dollars from real Champlain Towers Condo Collapse victims by submitting fraudulent claims against the $1 Billion settlement. We discuss the ramifications of the tile patios that many CTS residents had, as well as the high-rise condo that was evacuated this weekend from a flood and shifting the first floor. We also examine the patios more closely at Champlain Towers South before the collapse to see what the issues were and if they were a stressor in the condo collapse.
Mentioned in this video from KHOU: High-rise condo residents in limbo after city pulls occupancy permit over structural safety concerns

Jeff, you are a class act! You have my utmost respect.As a direct family member to a victim, I find it absolutely disgusting that these people think they can waltz in and make a claim on our family’s tragedy. Makes me sick to my stomach. I can’t even make a claim, although half of me died with my baby sister and my life is in shambles. There’s not a day that goes by since June 24,2021 that I don’t cry, or suffer. How dare these disgusting people think for one minute they will actually be able to submit a claim. My life is pretty much over, and I cease to exist. Im blown away at the nerve of all these despicable humans. Jeff, you have done an amazing job at keeping everyone informed, and you have my full support. - Ashley Dean

I'm not trying to preach, I know you must be just broken. Just remember you matter just as much as she does, and your loss would be just as great.

The same thing happened when the Grenfell Tower in London burned killing 72. Many people submitted claims for grants, re-housing and compensation whereas they had no connection with the building whatsoever. Those that were caught were given custodial sentences.

@@jeffostroff They sent them back into their flats because the plans available to the fire service indicated that each flat was properly sealed from all the adjacent ones, and that the doors all had proper, effective intumescent strips on them. Some idiot or multiple idiots who should have known better, also thought that flames couldn't possibly rise up the outside of the building, inside the cladding or otherwise, because yanno, physics, melting the window frames, then breaching the windows on the way, rinse and repeat. By the time people realised it was too late, well it was far too late; even the stairwell was a death zone from just the smoke, if not heat and flames. As clusterfucks go, it was about as bad as it gets. They say 'Lessons were learnt', well I'll believe that when I see it.

You're so right about the depths of people's depravity, filing these fraudulent claims. Honestly, I've only watched one other engineer talk about this subject and thankfully, he never mentioned you, good or bad. Everything you've said seems perfectly reasonable to me. I'm not an engineer but I do know my physics, and you don't have to be a physicist to know how insanely heavy all that tile is. You just have to lug around a box of it.

Thanks Jeff for staying with this story. At the end, you comment about a lot of added weight and that you didn't say that it caused the collapse. In failure analysis, lots of 'little things' are considered and sometimes, they are contributing factors. In this area of engineering, people talk about the swiss cheese effect. This effect is described as a series of steps that have to happened for a failure to occur. The cheese is supposed to stop failure but every now and then, the holes in the cheese aligns and failures can slip through. Your thoughts about the tile, added weight and lack of proper maintenance will all be considered in depth in the final report concerning this failure. You are right to wait for the final word on the 'cause'. I'm with you (and I bet we all are on your side here) that the final report will have lists of contributing factors that led to the collapse.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s steel-reinforced concrete was used in building a prefabricated military garage for tanks several story's high up to 10 story's high. And it was over-built to handle 5 to 6 times more weight loads than what was required as a safety precautionary engineering code measures. And withstand very powerful earthquakes of all nature and has concrete pilings down to solid bedrock. Someone decided to use the same military engineering specifications also for skyscrapers with additional improvements added to the concrete mixture and much more powerfully strong rebars and ties and using mechanical intersecting bolting clamps and rebar connectors. 42 years later it is still standing and it's condition is still as good as it was 42 years ago and in pristine condition as if IT WAS JUST FINISHED CONSTRUCTION A WEEK AGO! Maintenance-free, trouble-free, and repair-free but still accessible for doing any maintenance inspection, trouble-shooting, and repairing unusual minor repairs if some foolhardy tenants start conducting reckless activities inside the building.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA Жыл бұрын
You got to love the military spec for reinforced concrete mixes for high strength applications. One part each of cement, sand and specifically defined rock fill, with both sand and rock needing to be washed and dust free, and also with a well defined size spec. The kind of concrete with reinforcing that you will not easily remove again, or damage. Shrugs off damage that would destroy lesser buildings.
@darthvader5300
@darthvader5300 Жыл бұрын
@@SeanBZA The sand must be multi-rough edged all over (.05 to .01 millimeter across) and the gravel must be multi-rough edged all over (.5 to 1 centimeter across), free of mica and coming from selected rocks such as basalt, diabase basalt, quartz rock, quartzite, dolerite, diorite. Sometimes fused high silica-iron volcanic rocks, if available, are used but very rarely. Today it is 2 parts cement + 1 part quartz or silica dust powder + 1 part graded gravel 1 part wollastonite. Total 5 parts. In 1978 - 1979 they use double-twisted 33 degree angle steel wire fibers .20 millimeter in diameter each and 33 twistings in length. Combined with steel rebars in a hybrid steel-reinforcement combination. All the steel has been cleaned, de-rusted, anodized in potassium permaganate-cleaned, galvanized. The quartz or silica dust powder is a fine as bleached white wheat flour and when it is that fine it will dissolved on water and in turn will react with the calcium of the cement forming calcium silicate which will make the mortar or concrete non-porous which makes the mortar or concrete water-proof and water tight. This is also vital when in contact with seawater so as to protect the steel reinforcement elements inside such steel-reinforced concrete structures on coastal military naval facilities. The ration of steel wire fibers per cubic meter of concrete or mortar is about 480 to 490 pounds per cubic meter.

Hey Jeff, I know it's been a long time after this was posted, but I just wanted to say you are the man, the authority on all this, I believe everything you say about this disaster, between you and Josh Porter, it doesn't get any better as far as knowledge and authority, screw those guys that are talking crap, it's like you said, they don't bother to read before jumping to conclusions, I just have to ask 1 question? I don't know if you know the answer or not? but in one of your videos, you talked about the woman that was in the last little sliver of the condo, about 4 stories up, that fell down about 7 seconds later, and she was on the phone to her husband saying the pool deck had collapsed, next thing you know it came down, I was just curious how many people were actually awake? and just didn't have time to get out of their condo, or were they just sleeping and didn't know? I would think a lot of them would've awoken after the pool deck collapsed, that had to be pretty noisy, that's amazing about the woman that woke up and went out and tried to shut the sliding glass door, and couldn't, and then she saw those massive cracks in the wall and grabbed a few things and ran, if she would've even stopped to sit on the pot and pee, she would be dead, that's totally amazing to me that she made it to the shear wall stairway. smart as heaven not taking the elevator, any knowledge on it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jeff, I watched his stuff right when the building fell, saw a few episodes and felt they were more theory and opinion from a non-subject matter expert than they were stating facts. Since then I have watched your content, I watch Josh Porter with Building Integrity, the and official updates and releases. I also watch the few bits that Practical Engineering did that went less into the specifics of Champlain but goes into explaining the mechanisms of collapse mentioned in relation to Champlain. That's about it. These days anyone can create a KZbin channel and suddenly they're a "subject matter expert" because it's simply a hot topic, and you'll get followers because people don't know the difference. Keep doing what you do, ignorance shows and for the ones that truly want the real story, they'll seek legitimate sources from suject matter experts. The others will just take anything and not know the difference.

Surely the patio/balcony tiles can't have a mass greater than the mass of a couple of people standing there? And the patio/balcony must surely have been designed to hold the mass of maybe a dozen or more people? So would the patio/balcony tiles really be any sort of significant problem? I guess you answered it with your "accumulation of forces" argument (and perhaps columns which were not thick enough). Thanks
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff Жыл бұрын
The people on the balconies considered a dynamic load but anything permanently attached is considered a static load. And the weight of those tiles is unbelievable is unbelievable if you ever picked up a case of a of 8 or 9 tiles at home depot? Try that next time you are in there. Plus on top of that you have God knows how many 50 pound bags of mortar it took to cover that entire area for them to set the tiles on to, and then after that the bags of grout that had to fill up the spaces in between the tiles. Add to that the amount of moisture that must be trapped underneath from the rainwaters.

Ever position in this world has a copycat fake. This is the problem with this culture, most can't tell the real deal. Having a degree in anything only shows you spent X number of years studying the foundation of that field. I call it wasted time, but you have to understand I went through 9 years of college. Then on the job training made you into an engineer. In college, the push was to learn and forget but not apply. I coined the pun Interatomic Bomb for the extreme failure theory of when things and pushed to their breaking point. The problem our culture has is we have morons that want the title without all the work. They don't want to learn how to use Eigenvalues or study fluid mechanics. They are false and need to be held accountable. When our culture fails to hold the fake accountable we allow the fake to make us all fake. This is a form of corruption that has to be removed!

Things like addiction, peers/influences, economics, overseas scammers living in poverty, crushing debt, desperation, etc etc etc. are all variables that come into play.

@@jeffostroff actually not...because if you really think about the structure of this building, you will realize that a steel basket encased with concrete doesn't just collapse like this building did. It's as if dynamite was placed into all the columns of this building and then detonated early in the morning but keep in mind how this building collapsed.... Into the center so all the debris stays on the property. .... Nice try tho. I'm not fooled. Obviously the 400 or more trying to claim money are. Lol

@@jeffostroff I think this setup was called, "To catch a NSA Scammer" because if insurance did pay out that would be fraud, the insurance fund is owned by everyone. Basically anyone receiving money would be commiting insurance fraud. .... Do you see how the NSA gets everyone, even its own.
@jmhowlett
@jmhowlett Жыл бұрын
Because the only way to tear down a concrete structure is with large machinery or dynamite. Most choose dynamite because it collapses into the center of the building keeping surrounding properties safe. Also this area is a very wealthy Jewish community. They would have never let a bulldozer clean up the mess. That would have been hands only removal and every body would have been recovered..... Next time keep all this in mind so its more believable. ....... seriously......go ahead and scrape millionaire grandma up with all your equipment, whatever it takes to clean up the mess faster......don't worry no lawsuits will be filed for mixing her with concrete... Lol

Also keep in mind the insurance fund is the general fund it's all tied together some way or another we need to make sure it stays safe because BIG TECH will be getting their retirement bonuses from this fund so long as they do a good job. Remember Big Tech helps people make the right decisions, especially the boomers. There's no stealing anyone's money on my watch. Plus they have a 20plus year warchest full of digital evidence to be used at any moment in time, when I decide so...but the boomers are smart, they know what's good for them. I don't think we'll ever need to open up that chest......
