A wise man once said, 'You can put small things in a big truck much easier than the other way around...' What do you want? A 45 Colt? Can do! A trapdoor 45/70? Got it! Cheap plinking loads with cast bullets and Trailboss? Easy! Deer loads? Piece of cake! It is for this reason that my gunsmith is making me up a 358 Norma Mag. I'll never shoot full power loads out of it, but if I ever need a big truck....

To me it feels like all these dumb tool and DIY hack videos. 10 ways to pull a nail out of a board and none of them are using the claw of a hammer. You want to do a job, get the right tool. One multi tool that is worse at every of the 5 things it does and comes with the risk of blowing up is not worth just buying the rifles for the applications required.

If you change the loads a lot for different roles it might be a headache to remember your zeros and drops. I can see having the capacity to go big if needed, yet still keep the rifle practical for day to day work, I suppose.

I bought a new Garmin chronograph just to test my 458 Win Mag handloads with 500 grain bullets and A2230 powder, following the recommendations in the reloading manual. I was getting 2160 fps. This is plenty of velocity for dangerous game, and great penetration. Shooting the rifle off the bench was no fun, but I did it for science.

I had a Ruger No.1, falling block. Absolutely loved that gun. I reloaded those compressed loads. It was a little scary when the powder came within about 1/4" of the top of the shell. You could hear the powder crunching when pressing in that big bullet. If I remember correctly, the bullet had a very heavy copper jacket over a hollow steel bullet cored with lead. I think we used 3031 powder, not totally sure. I once shot a tree that was 5 feet in diameter and the bullet went all the way through. That was one heavy recoiling rifle.

I would love to see a review like this on the 45/70. But forget about the old trap door. Theres so many people that would buy the new lever or single shot rifles out there now, if they really knew how versatile you can load the 45/70. Just like this .458, there not flat shooters, but with the right bullets, the mpbr is nothing to sneeze at. The 45/70 just don't get the attention I think it deserves. Thanks for the great videos.

What is your favorite powder for the .458WM? Mine is H335. I have never tried 325 grain. 350gn round nose at 2400fps works great for moose and Kodiak brown bears. I like the sound of 2800fps. I have also never shot a 500gn. Im in Alaska not Africa i think 500gn would be the right medicine for Africa. I call the .458wm the 3 step gun because I've seen many moose and 10foot+ bears only take 3 steps after the 458 slaps and on the other hand I also have seen many moose run away with 7mm and 30-06 like nothing hit them at all. Only to have the meat grinder stall years later>> What stalls the grinder? 7mm and 30-06 bullets from years earlier poor moose:( Found 4 bullets in the grinder so far mostly 30-06. 1 was my friends 30-06 from 4 years before. Knock on wood no 1 will find my .458wm in the grinder:(

I have 2 Whitworth Express rifles, in both .375 H&H and .458 WinMag. Awesome underrated mauser action rifles. They only weigh about 8 lbs though, and the .458 is pretty brutal. After shooting a few rounds through it 1 day I switched to my 12 gauge slug gun with 3 inch slugs. I swear I thought I had a squid load after the first round because the recoil was so light. I shot another and it was the same. I was so used to the 458 recoil that the 3 inch slugs felt like nothing. I believe I did the calculations once and the recoil was around at 75 foot-pounds. Also the recoil pad is rock hard which doesn't help.😵 The .375 on the other hand, isn't too bad. Great video, by the way!

Brigadier General Victor Johnson used the Winchester .458 magnum to hunt bigfoot, dogman, and werewolves. Some of his stories about hunting them in Alaska are horrifying. His story about killing a pack of dogman down in some swamp in Florida's panhandle was the most horrifying. He used the .458 Win mag because of its ability to take them down in 1 shot. We have them here in South West Tennessee (look up Pickwick landing) and the Land Between the Lakes in Southern Kentucky. Cocke County Tennessee is a really hot spot, thats where Tony Ahrens and Amber Miller were ripped apart by one a few years ago.

Thanks Ron. For your perspective on my request for this video. Just to be fair I never use the 458wm or the 45-70 on small game. I’d not find fun in erasing 😢 squirrels or rabbits However hand loading the 458 renders some amazing results and an ability to hunt the medium to the largest game to include DG. When I shoot lite loads like I use filler to take up the space and then only in the Ruger no1. As its strength is unmatched in hunting rifles. Great video. You made some great points. Thanks for raising the caution about dangers in reduced loads. It’s good to keep safe. Shoot straight eat great. Cailean

I agree, with hand loading the .458 can be very versatile...and therein lies the problem. New brass is unobtainium now, nobody has it in stock, and apparently Hornady has discontinued sales of .458 Magnum brass. If you want reloadable brass, you have to fire factory ammo...at better than $7 a pop.

Great video Ron. I use my 416 rem mag for everything now, and is the only rifle I carry. Which I only have whitetails and the occasional wild hog to hunt. I have never used the 400 gr loads on game because I simply don’t need them. I load 300 grain tsx at 2800 fps and 340 woodleigh pp at 2700 fps. That woodleigh load has over 5,300 ftlbs of muzzle energy and the trajectory of your standard 180 gr soft point 30/06 loads atleast to 300 yards. I practice out to 300 yards and it’s very easy to wear out a 10” steel plate at that range. The bullet combination has been devastating on whitetail.

I've been hunting with various 458's for over 40yrs and have killed everything from woodchucks to whitetails to caribou to red stag to waterbuffalo and cape Buffalo and more. The 458 probably has more bullet options than most other calibers and truly will work for most hunting around the world. Also you didn't mention the fact that because of the straight case it can be loaded as a shotgun shell for squirrels and rats and I've even taken grouse on the ground or roosting in a tree! The 458's, which I include the Lott and the 45/70 and 45/90 are truly the most versatile cartridges, if you are a handloader, out there. But keep it quiet would ya. That was interesting that you brought up "under loads". My old man blew up his 76 Winchester 45-70 (along with his hand) with one, oddly enough in 1976. Basically what happens is the primer initially puts the bullet in the barrel and the delayed ignition of the powder turns the chamber into a grenade. Very rare but it can happen. It's called a detonation.

Amazing how many responses about calibers that aren't in the discussion are posted here. I have a .458 WM in a Ruger #1T from 1976. I have a mostly full box of 510gr factory WW SuperX. It wallops the hell out of my shoulder. However, I used Midway USA to obtain a large supply of brass and lightweight bullets, so I have plenty of JHP and cast lead projectiles to experiment with in both the .458 and .45-70. Plinking with those calibers is enormous fun.

As far as recoil goes, if you can handle 12 gauge 3" or 3.5" turkey loads, from a light Mossberg 590 or Remington 870 pump shotgun you can run a .458 Win no problem. It's not pleasant or fun but it's doable. It's something I don't care for shooting lots of. In some straight wall only states where case length isn't an issue where case length is not limited. I think the .458 Win would be the cats @$$! You could utilize those Hornady FTX bullets for deer. I heard some guys getting close to 2800fps with FTX bullets by Hornady. I think it would be fun to play with. I might experient with said loads.

Nice video. I have a Ruger Number One in 458 WinMag, and have fired it about 325 times. It is very versatile from plinking loads with 305 grain cast bullets on up to the hotter stuff. Just because I could, I loaded some Hornady 300 JHP bullets up to 3,000 fps. Kicked like a mule, but reasonably accurate. Likely past the design limits for those bullets, but they held together. Great "varmint" load. It is a fun cartridge and rifle to shoot. Another good load is the Hornady (or Speer) 350 FN or RN at about 2350 fps. Not max, but very stout. Will group about 1" at 100 yards.

For light loads, just use the .458 X 2" American that Frank Barnes developed (and Marlin lengthened the belt on, and called the .450 Marlin). It is simply a 458 Win Mag case trimmed down to 2". I can load the old "collar button" bullets (under 200 grain) or even muzzleloader round balls at low velocity in these shorter cases for small game hunting without worry of "flashover".

My Browning Safari in .458 Win Mag is only about a 7.5 pound rifle. With full factory 500 grain loads it is a joy to shoot off the bench. However, I have throttled it down with cast bullets and it worked just fine. But once I did a very stupid thing. I used my own cast .452 diameter bullets and I couldn't consistently hit a target 15 yards out because they would not stabilize. They also leaded the bore up massively. Live and learn.

Something that could be loaded down for deer hunting and target practice but cranked up for dangerous game. The magic of the 350 legend is that it was cheap from the get go. I've hunted DG with my .458 Win Mag for over 30 years, and it has worked fine for me EVERY time!! All but one trophy (that being my very first cape buff) were all one-shot kills. My pet load is a Woodleigh 500gr RNSP or FMJ (identical SDs with a difference of 0.003 in BCs) driven by 72gr of AR2206H powder. This load prints 4-shot groups of each projectile that touch each other at 75yds, with recovered bullets retaining 98% of their weight. I've found the .458 WM to be an awesome calibre in a standard length action: which has benefitted from today's powders and bullets. Indeed, I know an African PH who says its performance - when using the Woodleigh 480gr RNSN projectile - is phenomenal on elephant and cape buff. True, there are many better calibres (I'd love to own an interwar 470 double with rising dolls head bite, but alas!). But for me, the recoil is very manageable, and - for my rifle, at least - it's super accurate. As the game hasn't changed, what more would you need? 👍

458 Win beautiful cartridge but not my pick for most versatile. In my opinion, take it as you will, the 45-70 still takes that crown because it can be loaded down to almost nothing with 200-250gr bullets for varmints and even shot shell or "forager" rounds for small game like grouse, squirrel and rabbit yet can still be loaded for the Big 5 which it has taken. The other is that the 45-70 rifle can be paired with a 45-70 pistol, like the BFR, which is another huge advantage. That’s the one thing the 458 Win still can’t do which puts it in second place or possibly third overall next to the 460SW which can be loaded in similar ways to the 45-70 and also has multiple pistol options.

I had a Win 348 and it was a great deer cartridge but it had several drawbacks. I found it difficult to reload , it had to be crimped and every now and then when setting bullets I would push the neck into the shoulder.I know this was my fault but I never had got concerned when loading other cartridges. The real game changer was mounting a scope, because of top ejection a scope would have to be “ side mounted “, producing an offset that looked ridiculous but could be practical.Being a traditionalist I sold the rifle and bought a bolt action and all went well. Some years later l bought an 18” barreled action in 358W put a Mannlicher style stock on it and was very successful with it, a friend admired the rifle and I sold it to him. I sold 5 or 6 rifles in my years as a hunter and later in life I regretted selling all of them.

The .348 Win, model 71 is an absolute classic rifle. It did have the top ejection which made using optics problematic. It fell out of favor in the 50's with production ceasing for the model 71 in 1958. Marlin came out with the .444 Marlin in '64-'65 which was to be a replacement lever action with similar external ballistics. It was billed as the most powerful lever action in the world. Evidently, no one told them the model 1895 Winchester in .405 Win still had more power than the trip4. Winchester started making their model 94 in Big Bore calibers like the .356 Win, .375 Win and I think even the .307 Win which has the bulked up receiver. The Big Bore models have side eject making mounting optics easy. I guess my question is, Winchester came out with their .356, .375 and.307 with SE why couldn't they start loading this for the .348 Win? It is one nice cartridge with plenty of horsepower for moose and elk. It has more horsepower than the .356 and .375. And now both the .356 and .375 are history as is the .307 Win. I own a Big Bore 94 Dark Shadow chambered in .444 Marlin. I shoot the 265 grain Hornady Superformance with 3300 ft. lbs of muzzle energy. It's a real beast. Also, the Big Bore models are made for higher pressure loads than what Marlin can bear. The locking bar at the back of the bolt covers the entire bolt and is firmly placed in the receiver. The Marlin has a locking lug that fits into the bolt halfway.

@@Mark-uq9km Mark , I enjoyed reading your response, it sounded like me 30 years ago. I am 91 now and live in Florida. I was born and raised in Pa. And began hunting with my Dad at age 14 , my Dad bought me a Mossberg bolt action shotgun and I used it for small game and deer for three years .I got my first rabbit and deer with it. My Dad then bought mod71-348 and gave me his model94-30 30 and a rifleman was born. I dove into books about rifles and ballistics and was a Jack Oconner fan from age 7. The first rifle I bought on my own was a Rem model 721 in .270 Cal I paid 72$ for it I could have bought a Win model70 for 95$ but didn't have the extra 23$! To make a long story short in my 50s I realized Iwas getting old and hadn't done any of the hunts I dreamed about. I N the next12 years Iwent to Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, New Foundland , several times to British Collumbia. I have taken 2 Dall sheep 5 caribou an elk 4 moose ,a mountain goat and misc deer, everything I killed was with my own hand loaded ammo. I hope you don't think I, m bragging. It was just pure determination and lots of scriming and saving and looking around for bargain hunts .My Alaskan hunt cost me 5,000$ and I took a ram and a goat today that hunt would be 20,000$ , I guess I was born at the right time. Mark I apologize for running on ,when you get old you take advantage of your age. Best wishes to you and your family and I hope get a chance to hunt your dreams

@@Nello353Well, heck, I'm from PA as well and now living in Florida. I bought my first rifle in 1978 from K Mart in Rochester, PA, a 336 Marlin in .35 Remington. I killed my first deer with it in 1981 in Beaver County. I've hunted all over PA and even had a moose hunt in New Foundland and took a nice moose. You have had a lot more big hunts than I. For years I would take my nephew and Son-in-law down to the Eastern Shore in MD for some great waterfowl shoots. I have amassed a decent amount of weapons: two .30-06s, a .308 win in a model 7600 Rem which was known as the PA Automatic, a .375 H&H mag, a model 1895 Marlin in .45-70 and now my Win 94 big Bore in .444 Marlin. I'm grooming my grandsons to want to take some big hunting trips when they grow up. I know they'll have a nice arsenal to choose from but I"m not quite ready to have them inherit my weapons just yet. Living in Florida always gives us great opportunities to go hog hunting, too. I miss PA but I love living in Florida. I'm travelling up to Harrisburg next week to go to the PA farm show. Maybe I'll get to see some snow. Thank you for your response and Happy New Year.

In view of looking for an all around cartridge limited to .30-06 length ----take a look at the .338 Winchester Magnum ---with factory loads up to 300 grain to match the .375 H & H ---i made the case in my book that it actually outperforms the .375 H & H, given the greater sectional density of the narrower bullet ---which can deliver better penetration (with the right bullet structure of course) ---and is frequently used in Africa as a only need to carry one gun option ---my African friend was a tracker/gun bearer for a professional game guide and he came home with a cartridge for me to add to my collection

And he just bought himself a 1886 45-70. I absolutely love Winchester guns. And also Henry lever action. I myself have a m95 405. If i went to Africa ide use my 405.

How does the 458 work with hard cast gas checked bullets. They are deadly out of 45-70 or 44 mag. No expansion and very deep penetration. . My 405 win with 300 grn shoots through 12 inches of white oak boards at 100 yards. .sizes 412. 😊

What about sabots? By loading with, say, a .45 to .30 cal. diameter reduction sabot, you introduce the prospect of using all the .30 caliber bullets available, which is bewilderingly enormous - from 220 grain down to 60 grain .32 cal pistol bullets. If the objective is plinking with a .458 for fun in order to familiarize yourself with handling, bolt action smoothness and speed, safety location, trigger feel, etc. it's better to do it knocking over cans than while a rhino or grizzly is charging. At least it's one way to do it, cheaply, including sabot, bullet, and filler. In a straight-wall cartridge you can use a superthin overpowder wad half way down the case, and fill the rest of the case to the sabot's base with styrofoam pellets to keep the powder close to the primer, as has been done for ages. Sabots are light - 6 grains or so, and so is styrofoam - so the total payload weight doesn't really affect the ballistics measurably from that of a bare bullet. The other alternative is to use a powder engineered for reduced loads, like Accurate 5744 and Hodgdon Trail Boss. And if you are so determined, you can model the Remington Accelerator from years ago, and get a viable high-velocity round, as well; the accelerators in a .30-06 tossed a 55 grain bullet downrange at .220 Swift speed. Hey, if we're experimenting, might as well think outside the box - even if it does put little plastic nubbits in the grass. Doesn't wear the bore, that's for sure! Your thoughts? (particularly on the 1:14 twist of a .458)

The 458 am in a ruger no 1 can be the 45 that can be loaded to duplicate most all the US 45 cal rifle cartridges. If you use the ruger no1. It’s a strong action. However if it’s just to much for the quarry I’m about to hunt then I use the king of versatility. The mighty the venerable the great. 30-06. After 118 years it’s still unmatched.

At this point I would argue the 460 weatherby would be more versified than the win mag. Only because the argument is the same for it as it is the win mag but it has the horsepower to push the very heavy or long bullets like the 600 grain woodleigh or 500 grain Barnes bullets. I mean starting loads are more powerful than the 458 Lott and easier shooting, in my experience. But to be fair it only holds a few rounds in a bolt gun and then it takes an experienced reloader to get power levels in line with a 45-70, unless you use the trail boss powder. But why do that. Cant kill something too dead and a 500 grain bullet at 2600 ish fps means I can put down any random Bigfoot or elephant I see roaming the woods.

I've shot with the 458 Lott and the 450 Rigby (made by those Park West guys you have somewhere there) and that thing thumped quite a bit more than the 458 Lott for me but it was shot no.8 for the day. Maybe a video comparing the the different cartridges like 458 win mag to the unnecessary shoulder cannon 460 Weatherby. I still wouldn't mind the 458 Win mag just because you can't have enough "investments" in the safe.

Double ignition has nothing to do with too little fill rate. You may blow up your rifle if the charge do not lift the pressure high enough and the bullet gets stuck in the barrel. Then there is still some unignited gasses that may explode with violent speed. This is called the double ignition. The casing fill rate has nothing to do with it. There are subsonic loads with 20% fill rate that are reliable. These use fast pistol powders
