I've been a huge fan of 45Drives and its ethos going back to when I first heard about them back in ~2015. The world needs companies who are in it *for the user*, something I feel that Microsoft has lost its way on. Unless M$ makes a massive change somewhere down the line, Windows 10 will be my last 'Windows'. You'd think if you're *paying* for an operating system, then you're buying the product... But more and more, *WE* are becoming the product - advertisements in the start menu, telemetry being sent from widgets you can't uninstall without effectively hacking the OS, we're paying to have our privacy sold to the highest bidder, and that's just a friggin travesty. And M$ really is the metaphor here; they want to make everything a service, an always-online subscription, enslaving (too strong a word, but of the same cloth as what I'm shooting for here) their users and milking us for all eternity. The same thing's happening across seemingly every industry - Adobe and all their multimedia creative tools, Autodesk and their CAD software, even media itself (how many movies don't even get released in a way in which you can actually 'own' them?), everyone seems to be doing their absolute worst to alienate anyone who previously used and loved their products. Can you even buy M$ office suite outright anymore? That was the first 'de-M$ification' action I personally took, probably 2016 or so - if I can't own it, then I don't want it. Sure it was difficult going at first, interop issues and the like, but these days there are a number of near 1-to-1 options out there, both proprietary and FOSS. I believe in the 45Drives mission. The HL15 is a bit beyond my reach, but I still troll the website and documentation, and any time I've sent a note in about some issues with the site, they've jumped on it, obviously sincerely appreciating the input, and are as passionate about what they do every day as I am about privacy, security, and the desire to 'own what I buy'. Some day, folks - some day, there'll be an HL15 in the rack to replace some of this aging heavy iron in my homelab, and it'll be the HL15 because 45Drives is *the* company to support in this space, at least as far as has been my experience. (I'm aware this comes off extremely fanboy-ish - in my [admittedly limited] experience with them, however, the positive sentiments are all justified!)

My biggest gripe with linux is that at any given point a single update can break your entire system over and over again and will sent you on a wild goosse chase trying to figure out what the heck happened. And how to fix it. Usually by going to the shell and doing this or that which may or may not work or break your system even more. All the windows haters should use the facts in their argumentation... Rarely ever do OS breaking problems pop up in windows that can not be easily fixed without loss of any applications, data and whatnot. I love ubuntu/debian sever but the struggle with desktop variants (fedora etc) is real. They run ok out of the box but don't dare to do too much to it because at some point you won't be able to boot up your sytem or start that applicationi.... Tbh.. Windows 11 has been pretty good to me and like the gentleman from 45 drives.. I've been using windows since its inception like windows 2 back in the dos days... If you disable all the crazy telemetry and communications, it really isn't bad.
