Unpopular opinion: The Powerpuff Girls 2016 reboot in my opinion looks really good and exciting. When we first were introduced, I didn't like it. Too bright, I didn't like the new powers, ect. But with this new clip out, it's shown it can be scary for a kid, which is really cool since it's not meant to be just for adults. The voices are warming up on me and the new power they have is actually really cool.

On the topic of either making a new iteration of a series its own new thing or exactly like the old series: People are gonna BITCH if you make it too much like the old series, people are gonna BITCH if you make it too different, and people are gonna BITCH if you take a middle-of-the-road approach. Whatever course of action they decided to take with PPG, people were gonna bitch anyway, so from the word go I think it was pretty unavoidable that this new series was going to get a chilly reception no matter what. It's just another sad case of the classic conundrum: Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

They marketed the shit out of PPG back when it was running, and they haven't been able to market anything quite like it since then, something that appeals to young girls in the same way and that they can slap on EVERY little girl toy/school/clothing product for girls conceivable. I don't even think Steven Universe has that type of demographic to market to.
