LMS 46115 Scots Guardsman takes charge of The Railway Touring Companies last Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express of 2014 from Carnforth over Shap to Carlisle and back to London Euston via the Settle and Carlisle line later the same afternoon.46115 is seen near Shap summit with a massive slip from 46115 happening right in front of me . I decided to let the cameras roll and stand back and watch and I am glad I did as I witnessed Gordon Hodgson and the crew fighting the slip in the cab .The return leg on the S&C sees 46115 at Cumwhinton and at a sunny Birkett common after the water stop at Appleby .Best watched in 720hd.

Thank you Bob , I had planned to film at Salterwath but it was very windy so decided to do the summit and compare the run from a few weeks ago of 46115 so it was a good choice. The crew did a superb job in stopping the slip I must agree . Steve

Cracking video Steve. that slip was well caught by the driver, we heard it 6 coaches back on the train. S'funny, but it slipped at exactly the same place last week - drat those flange greasers!! Anyway, a superlative performance by crew and engine. Many thanks for sharing. Cheers Alan

Excellent video Steve! Well done to Gordon and the crew and controlling the the slip. Certainly would of been a drastic outcome if the slip had continued. Lucky with the sun at Birkett which made for a nice clip. 46115 is certainly on fine form for this season and she does sound lovely. Thanks for Sharing!

The exhaust blast from 46115 is spine tingling - she's a very powerful loco. Agree the driver did a quick job of dumping the excess steam when she went into that massive slip, could have done a lot of damage to the loco. Hope Network Rail advise steam drivers of these lubricating areas/rails, probably not knowing how they work!!!

@tulyar1043
@tulyar1043 5 жыл бұрын
That wheelslip was caused by a railflange lubricater pumping out too much grease and this caused the wheels of 46115 to lose their grip on the rail hence the massive slip. Even diesels and electric locomotives and units can suffer from this.

Running on two cylinders would not help adhesion. Taken during the period when the middle cylinder was blanked off.
@deeremeyer1753
@deeremeyer1753 7 жыл бұрын
Really? That had to have had some serious consequences as far as power balance and power, didn't it? What was the reason for blanking off the middle cylinder?
@HughFromAlice
@HughFromAlice 10 жыл бұрын
Really interesting shots. Mighty fast reaction so soon after the slip started by an alert crew as it looks like somebody's first priority was to throw open the cylinder drain cocks, because you could imagine with that sort of power on that the chances of water getting pulled into the cylinders from a slip like that must flashed vividly through their minds! …☁☁☁⁘⁙☁☁⁙..☁……Hᴜɢʜ….Lɪᴋᴇᴅ…..ツ

Hi guys well don't you think it time to end the use of steam trains they are interesting to look at, but slipping, clouds of smoke stalling on inclines, what use are they any more, historic reasons, but that's not a good reason that's just dreaming of the past it connot come back an should not

Your entitled to your opinion but I’d strongly say no to the end of steam on the mainline which won’t happen for a while yet thankfully.
