amazing, old sound cine film attracting so much attention, I certainly enjoyed it, including the projector sound, rings a bell in the memory, very nice Austin, Cheers.

Thank you, it would be nice to film her again on the mainline, with or without streamlining!

A real treat from start to finish Austin, the RIbblehead shot a real gem given the speed restriction we've had for so long. Can't stand the streamlining, and it's scary to think it's nearly 20 years since she was last out on the mainline; being invited onto her footplate with my brother at Garsdale in 94/95 is a treasured memory. If you ever release a DVD compilation of your cine and VHS shots, I'll be the first to buy it - love to see material from that era.

Lovely to see 229 out Austin. Amazing playing spot the location to see how the vegetation has changed and how many cars were parked along the road. Seems much more crowded than nowadays. Interesting that in one shot once the loco had gone out of view you panned back down the carriages as they were passing - thought that was very effective. Thanks for bringing these shots back to life. Chris

Great video Austin, I do like seeing stuff from the past and great to see 229 out on the mainline. The only time I saw her without streamlining was on the GCR. Regards JamesandPeter

Thanks Leon, I think in a funny sort of way the projector sound is ok and doesn't intrude too much. On a cold wet winters Saturday afternoon I may have another try at home converting some of these old films

Fantastic video of 46229 Duchess of Hamilton in powerful action. The clip at 6.29 really showed her putting on the power, but all the clips are great and I'm glad they survived to be seen today! Ironically I never saw this loco in preservation, but I saw her many times in the late fifties and early sixties in the Glasgow (Polmadie) part of Scotland. The memories of her speeding home to Glasgow Central on the Royal Scot and the Caledonian are still pretty vivid. Thanks foe sharing it. Best wishes. Ken

Thanks Ken, I always loved to film and ride behind the Duchess although I was on her first train over the S & C when greasy rails meant we slipped to a stand at Stainforth. I've always believed she put in better performances than 6233 but then most locos seemed to be worked harder back in the 80's and early 90's. I've just had one reel of cine film transferred professionally to DVD but the results were less than satisfactory so I'm going to have another go at the films myself

Superb Austin , a lot of memories there for you and like Chris said how the scenery has changed at the locations plus cant believe you have a shot with the signal box at Horton ! Would be great if the money is spent to get her mainline ready again with or without the streamlining . Steve

Great footage Austin. I to have several reels of sound super8 film upstairs. Mostly Welsh Marches Pullmans and of the blue era of BR. Lovely to see the Duchess. All the best...Tim.

Pure nostalgia Austin, I ventured into sound 8MM cine for a while, but it must have been the most expensive media ever....4 mins of film and you needed a mortgage!....Bob

Thanks David, I agree about the streamlining, much preferred her as I remember her, storming up to Ais Gill. The only consolation I suppose is that it's easily removed! I really must get the old cine films converted professionally. I've seen some which have been converted and cleaned and they look superb

Thanks Steve, one thing you can guarantee is how much the vegetation will have grown over the years. I've got a few shots at Horton with the box also the box at Wennington which I may upload soon!

Yes, I think you're right - get 'em copied before it's too late! I dread to think of the priceless stuff that has been shoved to the back of somebody's cupboard.

Thanks Chris, I well remember being at Ais Gill and then everyone racing back to the cars to get away for the next shot, certainly seemed as though there were more folk about then but maybe we spread out a bit more today and seek out less well known spots. I reckon I must have got the idea for that panning along the carriages from either Railscene or PSOV.

Superb footage of an extremely popular loco Austin, the crowds of onlookers certainly look much larger then than they do now. Perhaps if the NRM can find some more money we will see 46229 back on its old stamping ground in the future...Graham

And also chewed by the rogue projector Alan! I've lost quite a few precious clips like that. I've seen some films that have been converted professionally and the results are superb as each frame of the film is scanned so the resulting image is free of flickering. I've in the region of 20 x 200 foot reels so I'll need to start saving!

Thanks Barry, we are rather spoilt today aren't we with the equipment we have at our disposal. I always feel it was a bit more fun and we got some better loco performances back in the eighties and nineties

I can't remember how much the films cost Bob, I know I used to buy around 10 at a time from places like Jessops to get them a bit cheaper. Now I need a mortgage to get them transferred professionally onto DVD!

Thanks Dave, it's true that there used to be so many people at the lineside compared to nowadays. I always thought that 46229 had a crisper exhaust than 46233

While you're at it, Austin, you could ask if they are able to trim top and bottom and make it landscape format?

Come on then Tim, lets see some of this footage! I travelled on a number of WME's and have footage of run pasts at Abergavenny and the loco changes at Hereford, happy days. I've seen some professionally converted cine films and the results are superb, the machines scan every frame so the finished film has no flickering. Thanks, as ever, for your comments

You can do that with some editing packages Alan. I used Sony Vegas for a while and it was quite easy to convert to 16:9 with that.

It is high time this Lady was let loose again instead of being stuffed and mounted. She has always sounded better and performed better on the S & C than 6233. When she took the blue Riband over the S & C it was with 14 coaches not 12, none of the other locos ever got ner her. I believe she still hold the record over the S & C.
@acw7100010 жыл бұрын
I agree, she is sadly missed and I think you're right about her still holding the Blue Riband. I think the money that was spent restreamlining her would have been better going towards a full overhaul.

I have had enough of 46233 gallivanting around the national network. Time to get 60800 Green Arrow and 46229 back out. They have not turned a wheel for about 25 years now. Thats longer than I have been living on this planet for! Quite sure that 46233's wheels are feeling quite worn out and she needs a break! Great video of now a long gone runner of the class!

46229 was a better engine. The main reason for that was that one of the 'friends' staff paid a lot of attention to tuning the valve events to get it working perfectly, plus the cylinder castings had been streamlined internally - 6234 was the only other of the class the same. He was a real enthusiast who came from the LNER originally, and you can see the results on this film. Wonderful days. Those escapades ended when Butlins sold the engine to the NRM, who then took over the operation of it from the 'friends'. They couldn't wait for the ticket to run out in 1996 so that they could then keep it static in the Museum, and they got their way. There was a lot of bad blood over that.
