Doing one of these on a 4630 right now, definitely a lot easier to get out than the 40 series tractors.

Good video. Im working on a 4255 and got to a point where i can't get the components inside the column back together, while in the tractor. It looks like you really have to take the whole assembly out.
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms375417 күн бұрын
That's the easiest.. To take the metering pump off is easy. To put it back together and keep the seal,washers in place and get the shaft into the pump is a challenge.
@brettrace15 күн бұрын
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 seeing that you replied after 4 years after making this video, i thought id let you know that i actually did figure out how to replace the column, while in the tractor. A 3" bushing under the big nut on top keeps the top part from falling down too far. Rebar wire wrapped around the bottom of the shaft (the part that goes into the steering valve/pump and through one of the 4 bolt holes of the steering column keeps the shaft, that slides into the valve, up and in the column. This keeps the internal parts of the column somewhat in place while you wrestle with bolting the hinge and spring in place. With the valve located right under the column, there's enough room to replace that seal on the valve. remove the wire that is holding up the shaft that slides into the valve body, slide that shaft back into the valve and bolt the 4 bolts back together. Then bolt the steering wheel on, drive it around the yard, feel proud about yourself, realize that oil is now pushing up the entire steering column. Stop, drink, and contemplate life. Apparently the valve body itself can have internal worn washers that cause pressurized oil to push out the seals in the first place. Still, once again, thanks for the video. At least i can tell myself i tried more than most people.

Nothing like the sound of a old John Deere running. 👍

Really appreciate your videos involving this era of John Deere! Helps a lot! I've got the metering pump out of a 4440, on the bench already. Leaking all over cab floor and top of trans case. Point(s) of leak not obvious. I've read over the test procedure in TM1182 but, I do not have the gear to test properly. Is there a quick and easy way to test this assembly for leaks? Shop air in inlet fitting perhaps... I know that the low pressure line was leaking due to age and degradation. I've got all the o'rings and seals on order but if it's only this shaft seal that would save me a lot of trouble as I don't have alignment dowels for proper reassembly.

I am attempting this today to get it out. Mine is a open station 4030 so the steering wheel has been a bear! Had to get the fire wrench out and heat it so the the little plastic slip tube is now very much toast! But I got the wheel off now on to the rest of it see how it goes. 🥴

@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 I got it all out and apart so now just clean up and putting it back together . I had to remove the clutch pedal on mine to get the column tilt bolt out. It was hitting the pto lever.

We have a 4630 that has had the metering pump rebuilt at the local JD shop. Once returned home the steering is extremely hard to the right and perfectly fine to the left. What do I need to inspect?

Early 4630 with the 20 series steering? They will have to do it again and adjust the valve clearance most likely

Welcome glad you made the trip from Chile! If I do a service here where you drop the oil and it changed the filters it would be about 11 gallons. It might change a little bit whether it's power shift or Synchro

My 4030 is leaking up by the steering wheel. I wonder if this is the problem with mine? My fix for the last year has been plastic folgers can wired to the column!! Lol. Cause they wanted 1000.00 for a steering valve!! 🥴

@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754, don't. I've come here to find out a better way to do this and now i think its just better to take the whole assembly out. Its seemingly impossible to line up the telescoping pieces in the colum while it's verticle
