Aww Phoebe, you had me in tears. I emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand with my parents when I was five years old. And I am now 60 yrs old and have never been back to Scotland. My heart is aching to go back to see the country, and the history and seeing relatives I have never met. It’s certainly on my bucket list. Glad you had such a lovely grandad. I’m sure he’s there with you Phoebe. Have fun in beautiful Bonnie Scotland.❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

If you’re coming to Edinburgh, you might consider staying out of town at much cheaper accommodation and taking public transport in. The buses are really regular and the nowhere’s far from a bus stop. You pay by card, tapping in on every journey, but pay a maximum of £4.80 per day no matter how many journeys you make. You’ll not need a car unless you want to get out into the countryside. Edinburgh is the love affair that never ends.

Glad you liked Edinburgh. I also miss my own grandpa a lot, loved him to bits. His great granddaughter (my own daughter) is a Phoebe too. Such a beautiful name ;-) The river you walked along at Dean Village is the Water of Leith. It runs from the Pentland Hills on the South West of Edinburgh right down through the city and on to to the Port town of Leith, where it meets the Firth of Forth. My grandpa was a born and bred 'Leither'. Very much worth visiting Leith next time you're in town. It's only a 10 minute tram up the hill to Princes Street. It's also much less touristy, usually has cheaper accommodation and has some amazing pubs and eateries, including several Michelin starred restaurants.

You can also get the express coach service from Buchanan Bus Station just up from "conehead". Just returned to the States two weeks ago. Edinburgh is my favorite City in all of Europe (although there is an argument about UK v Europe). You did your Food Homework right and there are so many more Restaurant Gems.....However the price for accommodation is scandalous! Diagonally across Leith Walk from the Street Food Court in the Saint James Complex is Roomzzz at less than 1/2 that price, new and spacious rooms and central to exploring. Just did a Tripadvisor Review with high praise. For such a short trip you packed in a lot of why I go back time and again. Wonderful! This coming June I will be back with my son, daughter in-law and Granddaughter.....her first time visiting. My heart is bursting with excitement to see Scotland through her eyes!

@@travelforphoebe Thank you for your highlight on my wee comment. Edinburgh holds many venues and depending on the time you go, they basically can charge what they think that they will get away with. The Edinburgh Comedy Festival or The Tattoo are usually booked months in advance and you can still get bumped from your hotel/B+B etc. As a Glaswegian I can say that often the same can happen in Glasgow, so I’m not dissing on the Capital. All the best to you and yours. Rab

As I was helping many of my Swiftie friends from across the pond over this past year. The big tip is to stay in Glasgow and either commute to Edinburgh or get a car on hire and get to Ingleston Park & Ride and take the tram in. So brave of you to share a personal story. And those bagpipes are always👌. The reason I haven’t been to Edinburgh is the hotel prices. It’s insane paying nearly 300 pounds for a hotel. It’s almost as pricey as London. The parks are so super green. This is why I love the UK. The Edinburgh Castle looks so nice with the fog around it. And the grounds around is are so beautifully green, and mowed by someone with OCD which adds to the experience. Thanks for sharing your Edinburgh episode and for opening up about your grandad. Really enjoyed the video and your enthusiasm for the city especially with the family connections. I have lived in Edinburgh since the 1960's and keep up to date with all the developments , if you book far enough in advance you can easily find a budget hotel for under £50 ! , so many potential visitors are put off by the misinformation that all accommodation is expensive , that is simply not true , it seems the city is the victim of it's own success having the highest hotel occupancy of any city in Europe ! , thousands of scheduled new hotel rooms should help lower costs out of peak season.

This is one of my favourite cities in the world, and the place were I did my bit of solo travel. I can't tell you how much I love it! I stared at the menu in the window of the mash place for ages but would have felt a bit weird going in on my own. I really wish I had found that Street Food place - it looks awesome! My hotel was on Princes St (Easy Hotel run by Easyjet). The room was incredibly tiny, but in a great spot and less than £100 a night. As a whisky entusiast it's a great place to visit, although it would be very easy for a tourist to pay over the odds. I love watching your videos, but to see places I am familiar with and love so much put a huge smile on my face.

Its better if you get a hotel outside of Edinburgh, its a tourist city with hiked prices for tourists, there are tons of towns outside of edinburgh where your £100 a night could rent you an entire house for a week, nevermind a small room. Trains into Edinburgh from these places every half an hour.

I wouldn't recommend the inconvenience of having to travel into the city everyday when you can save time to see more attractions on your next visit as there are plenty of budget hotel rooms for under £50 in the city if you book well in advance when the dates are first released , there will always be a warm welcome whatever the weather !.

I am born and bred in Edinburgh and I hate people being ripped off in my opinion.I live in a nice city area about ten minutes from the airport and lots of regular buses to the city centre and close to amenities. I am within walking distance of places tourists do not ever get to go to steeped in history. I am in the middle of getting my house decorated but once finished I have two spare bedrooms which I am considering letting people stay in. I wouldn't ask for money but a fiver a night(I would waive the fiver for giving the dog a quick walk. I am surrounded by parks) toward the cost of washing towels and linen, etc. and the costs of gas and other amenities. I live in my home half the week but I smoke in my room and have a dog. You can walk up the hill I live on and you have a panoramic view over the city, over the Forth to Fife. OverPentland Hills then over West over the airport and beyond. I am considering doing that for gap year students who are watching their pennies and wanting to visit Edinburgh. It's just a thought in my mind just now but I really want to do it. If I do decide that where would advertise? I don't want money the fiver would be discretionary just to chip in. Just an idea in my mind for now.

As I stayed in New town near playhouse there, I went to Princes street garden almost every day after school and just looked at the castle and chilled out as well. My great regret is I hadn't tried having Haggis :) My Aussie mate in Brisbane and his ancestors came from Edinburgh,Scotland,I suppose. cheers

Edinburgh is one of those rare places that's always great, no matter the weather. I love it in the fog, or haar as it usually is in Edinburgh - it looks amazing if you see breaks in the haar down at shore. Edinburgh is getting more and more expensive to stay in. I used to visit overnight 3 or 4 times a year, but since covid it's been too expensive. I stayed last year for my birthday, and looked again for my birthday this year which is a few weeks away...and decided against it. I also recently did a charity walk in Edinburgh, but had to stay outside of Edinburgh to make it worth my while doing it, or the hotel would have cost more than what I was raising!! If I lived further away I'd fork out for a hotel there, but I'm only a couple of hours away by train, so I'll stick to daytrips until the hotels become more reasonable again. I always do a morning walk to Dean Village when I'm staying in Edinburgh, usually early morning on check out day. I love walking along the Water of Leith. Alas that's not the actual Elephant House - that's one they've opened up while the original is rebuilt after a fire. There's plenty of nice towns near Edinburgh you can stay in. Linlithgow and South Queensferry are two I've stayed in which are 20 - 30 minutes from Edinburgh by train. But Glasgow is fantastic as well, obviously.

New to your channel but definitely staying now! Our home city and what a time to visit with our great Scottish weather 😊 The mist just creates an even more ghostly, haunted atmosphere in the city. Unfortunately, like you mention, the city is being ruined by greedy tourist accommodation owners and 'gift' shops which is a shame. Edinburgh Street Food is incredible especially the Detroit Pizza! The best biggest small country in the world 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Stay Safe 🙂

I was going to suggest staying in Glasgow and making the trip across, then you mentioned it. Another great video, lass. Glad you enjoyed your time. I need to get back to Edinburgh. Even though I can get a bus or train straight from mines, I don't get through very often. Last time I was there, I did the almost 13 miles of Leith Walk, which you did part of when you walked from Dean Village. A great walk for anyone reading who enjoys a nice gentle walk. Good for birds and other wildlife too for anyone like me who wants to go wildlife watch. I'm next due to go through for a candlelight carol service in St. Giles Cathedral, but you've inspired me to go through before then. Oh, by the way, tattie means potato. So a tattie scone is pretty much literally a potato flatbread, as you said. I didn't know if you realised this.

That's a shocking price to pay for 2 night hotel stay. Pro tip - Premiere Inn / Travel Lodge etc have far cheaper rooms that this - and they're close to the centre. It's only a comfy bed you want after all as you'll be out and about all the time, including meal times.

The hotel you stayed in was originally built as student residences in the mid 90s - I lived on the 8th floor when I was in 1st year at uni in '96! Iirc it cost about £250 per month, so the prices have certainly gone up!😅 I think Edinburgh is a city that is arguably overtouristed nowadays tbh, certainly in parts. The eye-watering accommodation costs are one unfortunate symptom of that
