Sometimes, when I couldn’t sleep. I used to check if Otis was at his office. Most of the times , he was there; patiently waiting for the fish to come to him. And between the sound of the waterfall, and Oti’s stillness; I would fall asleep. I kept on checking this year. Hoping that he would show up. I miss his sweet, sleepy face. Sweet dreams, Otis 🐾💙🐻

What a beautiful montage of Otis through the seasons! Alas, I was new to Katmai in 2024 so I am learning about him from everyone, & am in love with him. Hopefully he has just found, in his golden years, someplace quieter, calmer & less crowded & happy & well fed there. Especially since several of the regulars didn't come back in '24. I arrived for the first time at Brooks River bear cams early this summer 2024. I found the channel by accident and was captured by the bears faster than 903 getting jumping salmon off the lip or 32 eating 30-40 salmon in a day. I watched almost every day after my arrival right until the cameras shut down for the season and the bears were good and fat for their long winter naps. One thing that happened over and over throughout my arrival in early summer into autumn was chatters popping in and enquiring if Otis had returned yet and always disappointed he hadn’t been seen yet. The chatters knew the dates from past seasons when 480 had made his first appearance and held hope he would return. The daily ritual continued until it was the latest day recorded Otis had returned to the Falls. Many chatters thought he might have been off fishing other streams but also realistic he was an old bear who lived a long life. I didn’t get to experience 480 like the rest of you but a legend and King he is. Just like The Beatles were already broken up when I started listening to them and loving them Otis has become one of my favourite bears watching all his videos put together by bearheads and reading his bear wiki page numerous times. Sleep well bears and sweet bear dreams bearheads.

like 410, when she stopped coming, it took me years and years to admit maybe she was not returning, I hold out hope for Otis (480). but what I missed in 2024 was this feeling that when he returned, and was fishing in the office, I felt like everything was ok in the world. it was not unlike when Aslan returned to the land and set everything at ease. also even tho chatters disagree on who is the fattest bear or whatever, everyone's love of Otis unified the explore bear community... I miss that sense

I'm not sure if Otis will be back but he sure gave us so many memorable moments from epic butt bites, naps and fishing sessions to chill zen fish master, grumpy hellos to 747 and fishing in the snow with 812. He was also incredibly photogenic: dozing in his daybed amongst the fireweed with his feet in the air, learning against a branch amongst the same fireweed, and last year alone we got him fishing under the light of a full moon, his "Fish Ahoy" stance on the rock, his butt in the air child pose, and the incredible 20 minute stare into our soul in the office. And if 2023 was the last time we see Otis, he sure went out with a bang with The Great Bear Stampede of 2023! I cannot think of any other bear who will inspire daily fishing reports and compulsive following from cam to cam to the point of looking for speck Otis on Dumpling Mountain. Otis, you are so loved and will always be remembered ❤

None of us can be sure whether Otis has left this mortal plain or not. But all of us can agree that his spirit is immortal and will live forever in all our hearts and memories. I will spend next year with at least a glimmer of hope that our King Otis will return. If it is not to be then I will spend my remaining days imagining him at the Big Bear Rainbow Bridge with an endless supply of succulent salmon.

I know not to humanize wild animals but after having some physical issues the last few years, seeing Otis continue to earn a living gave me a feeling like if this guy can do it, so can I... but we do make attachments and sometimes it's okay to be sad..
