I really want to thank you both, I have been watching you two for a couple years now and I just signed the paperwork for a 2006 Meridian 490 pilothouse. In the Royal Navy, the term "cockpit" originally meant the place where the coxswain was stationed. This led to the word being used for the area near the stern of a small boat that houses the rudder controls. The midshipmen and master's mates were later assigned to sleep in the cockpit. It was also the place where the ship's surgeon and his mates were stationed during battle. The term existed long before aircraft were invented.

The solution is Inflateable pillows with Lanyards Every morning you throw them over board where the float after / along the boat and fetch them back in the evening. Bit wet but that is "authentic 18th century" feeling (Weevil proteing fortified biscuits optional) ;)
@sashabenoit15185 ай бұрын
@@mbr5742 Not just the issue of being wet but if you're in the Ocean, you're bringing all of that salt onboard and on your furniture, plus any other grossness they come in contact with, especially if you're in a Marina where it can be polluted with fuel, garbage, and other dirty stuff. And depending on what they're made of, they'd probably get ruined from the elements (ie: the Sun, salt, and any chemicals) pretty quickly. Not to mention, they'd likely smell like low tide...

Rather impressive layout for the age, love the utility space being both a workspace for the engine room and laundry, and overall another great tour! Thoughts on the condition(s)/initial changes updates I'd likely want within the 1st year of owning: - That boat deck really could use collapsible tender chocks, cheap and easy update that would open the entire area for use while on-hook/dingy deployed - The freestanding furniture is a bit dated (though still in great condition) but think I'd probably want to redo the interior brightwork to a lighter (and low gloss or matte) wood grain/finish, maybe a light or mid-honey maple tone... - Helm I could go either way.. full reno if I was going to fulltime cruise, maybe just refinish the console platform/top and update the switches/gauges Everything else I might later want to address would be longer term updates/upgrades as time/money allowed lol For your trivia question: Cockpit: Traditionally a "pit" or lowered deck portion where the helm controls (originally a tiller and helmsmen [a.k.a. cockswain]) would be located. Basically just a reduction of the "cockswain-pit.". At least that is what I was always told... The urban legend version is far less family friendly, but immensely funnier.

I have to say, Wow, that is such a nice ship. The owner really kept it up, and modified it right. I'd love to own it, and live aboard myself. Most newer ships don't have 'Style' like this. So much new that fits in so well with the classic beauty that you'd think a 'gentleman's yacht' builder had totally built the inside from scratch last year.

I love the sort of elegant practicality of Viking vessels. They know what each deck/level is for, and they make efficient use of that level for its purpose. No tetris-like 1/2 and 1/4 staircases haphazardly strewn around blocking the flow and function. No excessive redundancy in space utilization. Great galley. Effective outside spaces that haven't been stretched beyond their need, nor crammed with irrelevant "features" and trip-hazards for some checklist advertisement. They just consistently make solid, useful boats for their categories.

I really like the wood and the layout of this one. The quality of the casework is really impressive. I like the kitchen, too. Perhaps things are slightly dated, but I think I'd tell people it is "classic" if it were mine!

Awesome boat tour. Would love to own it, but a bit out of our budget. Victoria, thanks for being open about your situation. I have a similar problem brought on from a time I missed the last step on a job site and landed on a concrete pad and then rolled into gravel that was beyond the landing. I messed up my knee and it took over a year of rehab to get it back somewhat to "normal." Even seven years later, I still have issues going down stairs. Most times, I have to take one step at a time. Yes, we all show our "pretty" side on social media, etc., but it is more common to show that life is not always what it seams. My brother who is the CEO of a boat accessory company has dedicated a portion of his biography page to talk about his struggles with panic attacks, etc. Fair winds and following seas to you both!

9:29 Your bravery is inspiring ❤️ I can relate to the immense challenge of revealing yourself and your struggles to the world, and the emotions you feel are very evident as you speak. I have had a problem with depression for more than 40 years, and it has been incredibly debilitating in my life. I have been through counseling a few times and am currently seeing someone, but the path to recovery is long and arduous. I don't possess the eloquence to express my thanks to you for your honesty, but I am infinitely grateful nonetheless 😊

Victoria, I think that was an induction stovetop. As chefs, we love them. The heat is conducted only when a metal pot is placed upon it. Once the pot is removed, all heat is lost. NO FIRES can happen unless you reduce a wine or sherry stock and leave the pot on to catch fire.

Cockpit would be from the old sailing ships that had the helms in the rear. The emergency rudder is back there. Oh! In a prayer we pray to God fro. protection from all anxiety. My wife Nadira and I just suffered the loss of our famous cat Zoe of 9 years and we expected her to live another 8 or so. We have 2 dogs but are truly heart broken over this beloved family member. I love this boat. My dream liveaboard is about this size and configuration, except it's got a bathtub or a hot tub (I don't care which, but I need hot water!), disabled accessibility, solar panels to run the house with, and transoceanic capacity. If I ever find a boat like that I'll sell my house and go to sea. :) (And yes, I know that if I want a bathtub and accessible passageways/elevator/etc, I can't actually have one this size. Hopefully if it's well designed it wouldn't need to be *too* much bigger, but I'm dreaming, not trying to be realistic.)

@@NautiStyles Okay, I just finished watching your Impossible Dream video and WOW! I love the lifts on that boat -- it's hard to get wheelchairs down into the hulls of a catamaran or up onto a boat from the dock (especially without an accessibly designed passarelle), but they nailed it. So simple and so easy to use, and they take up almost no extra space! There are a few other accessible catamarans out there -- I think Alva makes a semi-accessible power cat, and I actually spoke to them about whether they intended to make a fully accessible one someday. They don't have current plans to do it as a standard model, but were enthusiastic about taking on the project as a custom job. So when I can afford to have a custom yacht built, I guess I know where to go! (Pedigree shipyard, here in Washington, was also interested in doing a custom designed fully accessible catamaran, either power or sail.) Doing it custom would get me my tub and my solar panels, too. 😂

Listen to Victoria with the trivia over here lol 😆 as for the term "cockpit" it's different vernacular, depending on whether it's nautical or it's aviation? Typically, cockpit was always where the controls were but not with the the modern trend in boat sizes.... which is now reserved for the aft entertainment section of larger yachts - entertainment spaces I believe to be aft of amidships... for the most part off the stern deck - the main distinction being cockpit is for aircraft, helm for boats. So the "cockpit" (as it were) is a difference in expressing contemporary nautical vernacular. And that is a beautiful thing. Sharing a personal struggle that people may or may not passively may pick up on and some of the content you put up, our hearts and prayers are with you too, but you two are just fine. He needs to be patient and love on you and you need to respect the fact that he's doing that... Do that and you two will be fine - blessings ❤️🙏

Thank you for telling us about your problem. We all have a strange one. I’m sure mine is don’t laugh fear of protective railings. I don’t go near protective railings, no matter the heights, but I could stand on the edge of a cliff and feel perfectly comfortable. That’s crazy to me.
@NautiStyles5 ай бұрын
That is a literally THE COMPLETE opposite of mine… if there is a railing I can be on the 100th floor balcony looking over the edge, but I can’t go over to the 2nd floor roof if there is nothing 🙈🤷♀️ don’t believe how similar but different our fears are
@eddieohearn175 ай бұрын
@@NautiStyles my logic is I can’t trust the rail because I didn’t build it. I don’t know if it’s ever been maintained. How can I trust something like that you can’t. but I can trust myself and I know my limitations and since I used to climb, I don’t bother me at all
