49" Diamond Demon & Bantam 19 Spark Engine - Pt 18: Tissue on the Fuselage - Ben Buckle Plans

Pt 18: Tissue on the Fuselage of the Diamond Demon a lovely, 49" wingspan, vintage plane from the late 1930's, Designed by Jerry Stoloff, which was first kitted out in 1939 by the Bay Ridge Model Airplane & Supplies Co.
This is a build series that will take you step by step through the construction of the model, culminating in this maiden flight, and to be followed by a build & flight review. The finished aeroplane will be powered by a 1940's Bantam 19 ( • Bantam 19 Spark Igniti... ), an excellent spark ignition engine. The aeroplane will have 2 channel RC, elevator & Rudder.

Mark, congratulations on your outstanding building and video presentation skills. What do you think would be the airplane size limit for using doculam and tissue?

Thank you very much for the kind comment, greatly appreciated, pleased you enjoyed the video. The Diamond Demon is 49" but see no issues using it with a 60" vintage type model, however if it was on a high stress wing, so something fast I would be nervous about the overall strength. Also, if you wished you can get thicker laminating film, hope that helps 😀

Quick question. Do you varnish over wet tissue or wait for it to dry out first? I guess as it's water based, it can dry out with the poly varnish?

Can't you apply the tissue by brushing the varnish through it?...All that water seems like an unessesary step...The varnish will hold it down better than plain water...🤔🇬🇧

No, doesn't work well, it is important to use the water to position the tissue and to hold it in place before applying the polyurethane. If its just a small patch or repair then it would be ok, but certainly not on a wing or the length of the fuselage.
