I believe in skill. But that's not the answer. I don't have enough experience to answer your question but I have my private opinion on gear. I think that some people (men) fetishize gear to the point where music becomes a secondary, background element. I fell in love with your Gibson because it was clear to me that it's an instrument to create the sounds you love and not a goal in itself. I wanted to say one thing about comparing gear. I think that the best way to do it would be to test guitars not knowing their price.

You should review the Gretsch g2420 at some point

When I first met you I think you only had two guitars. The Gibson HR and an acoustic. Now you have an entire wall. Bro, record a little jam with Nir Felder. That would be sweeeeet!

You should make a habit of clipping the excess strings, I saw someone loose an eye once, great video BTW

Hi there Rotem...thanks for this video. I do believe in gear but up to a certain degree. I know a guitar like yours (even your very same guitar) won't automatically make me as great a player as you are. However, when it comes to gear, a couple of things happen: (1) A more expensive instrument may have better materials used and more care taken while constructing it and, as your video proves (at least to my ears), does make it sound better, especially on acoustic guitars. (2) A fancier instrument may be more appealing to you, which in turn makes you pick it up more often and play more, which will make you a better guitarist. Anyhow, I happen to own a Dowina guitar myself, and I think a paid about USD700 a few years back and I love the sound of it. The look & feel of it, the timbre, and the intonation are spot-on in my opinion so very happy with it and I'm surprised to see you reviewed one of these guitars as they aren't that common (I think). Cheers

Very enjoyable to hear you play a little more than usual and to follow some of your ideas on what you might look for in a guitar. The better, thinner woods of the more expensive guitars give a more expressive sound. And the playability of a well constructed neck is also rewarding. But if you plug them in, some extra reverb on the signal can make up for the poor natural tone!

You make a valid point although extreme opposites. I can see a $700 opposed to $1300, but $45 is a stretch. Ultimately, its how one feels about their instrument, feel, sound, construction. But there is something to be said for craft and in this era of C&C machines and Asian sweatsho..I'm mean, factories the difference can be subtle to glaring. The fit and finish of cheaper guitars has improved greatly. The trouble with inflation vs. quality should be reckoned with also. Unfortunately, the sky's the limit regarding price and that is frustrating to serious players. That said, artisanal instruments like artisanal anything comes with a heavy price. Dowina is a small luthier, hand made and still more price accessible than some big named brands .I WISH THEY WERE MORE AVAIALABLE IN THE US.

Interesting comparison. I think especially with acoustics, they change over time and that is an important point of comparison. How stable is the neck, the tuning and intonation? The sound will change over time too. It might be just me, but i hate painted acoustics for the sound and feel. That being said, you can certainly get a great guitar cheap - $49 though... Even $149 with work done - you did well! Also, fantastic playing as always!

hey man, just wondering if you have ever recorded your main guitar with a couple mics in front... likes like it's a loud instrument; and thats cool. LOL cheers

I think gear only really helps your timbre. Not your rhythm, or melody. Maybe if the action is too low and there's no truss rod you'll always get buzzing. But for the most part, gear only changes timbre. (But some genres are much more timbre or texture focused anyways, and for them, that's alright).

My Eastman acoustic was $1300 and it’s as good as a Collings or Bourgeois, just like my Eastman electrics compare to high end Gibsons. There seems to be a point where you are just paying more to fuel your ego, but cheap CHEAP guitars tend to be really hit or miss especially in the world of acoustics. It was different when I started playing 35 years ago when cheap NEW guitars were utter garbage but you could pick up a 60s Tele etc. for 250 bucks, but no one wanted them. Everyone wanted an Ibanez like Satch had or a Jem like Vai. Lol how times change!

Why do some guitarist leave their strings uncut? Looks sloppy and unprofessional.

I only play one guitar at a time. Well, unless you are really skilled, I guess we all only play one at a time, but you know what I mean :) Play it for 1-5 years maybe and then buy a new one. I have never picked up and played any of my old guitars after I buy the new one. Never..not once. Then why keep them? My daughter will get my collection when I die. I hope I have a very very big collection to give her..ha ha.
