This was really the end of an era for the 49ers. Tough way to go out with Hearst.

I remember that following year Steve Young went out with a concussion against the Cardinals and that ended his career. The 49ers ushered in the Jeff Garcia era and although he put up good numbers they missed the playoffs the next 2 years and not having Garrison Hearst healthy really cost them in 99 and 00. When he was healthy in 2001 they bounced back with a 12 and 4 record and a trip to the playoffs. After the 2000 season Jerry Rice left for the Raiders.

I hate how this Falcons team gets disrespected in hindsight. They were 14-2 that year, the same record as the Broncos, and they beat the--at that time--greatest offense ever to exist, Vikings or not. But with hindsight, they would have you believe they were some 10-6 or 11-5 team that got lucky. The Vikings had several chances to win that game, not just with Gary Anderson's missed kick, but they didn't. Jamal Anderson led the NFC in rushing that year and would have led the league had it not been for TD's 2k season. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my opinion. Have a Happy New Year.

This game (along with Steve Young’s injury a few games into 99) marked the end of an era for San Francisco. They had a win percentage on par with Alabama from 1983-1998 (which essentially encompass Montana and Young’s primes), and then in 1999, they fell off a Cliff after Young got hurt. They had two good years with Jeff Garcia before sucking for most of the 2000’s.

I kind of say that more of 2016 than 1998 since we were just 57 seconds away with just one stop on the two point conversation. The second loss can only be washed out with a short term dynasty such as winning consecutive Super Bowls or winning six or seven Super Bowls in a single given decade. One Super Bowl will not cut it unless we run it back the very next year.
@fortynights1513
@fortynights1513 Жыл бұрын
@@Shawn6751 In my book, 2016 was a bit better, and definitely more of a missing ring because they came closer to actually winning. But 98’s team was more well rounded. 98 had an offense and defense that were both top five by points, whereas 2016 had a number one offense, but only the 27th ranked defense. I’m sure in 1998, fans of the Falcons were thrilled to see their team even make the big game after never getting to a conference championship game prior.

These teams played three times that season, with the Falcons scoring 71 points and the 49ers scoring 68 points. Can't get a whole lot more evenly matched than that in 180 minutes of football.

San Francisco in 98 was the end of an era. After winning it all in 81, and a 3-6 1982, the Niners had 16 straight winning seasons from 1983-1998. Then Steve Young gets hurt, they were without Garrison Hearst in 99, and the defense which was decent but aging in 98, fell apart in 99, and they finished 4-12.

Said it in a couple of replies, but BOY there's a good reason the Secret Base crew decided to omit the clip of that injury from their documentary. I mean, *Jesus*. It almost looks like his foot's getting sheared off. I'm not quite seeing what Alex was talking about w/r/t Hearst's other foot getting "stuck" in the turf, though. It more looks like the turf was slick and he landed at an awful angle while trying to correct.
