I have a 1990 22RE with 224,000 miles. the car still drives like new. I have kept up with the oil changes and minor wear and tear items. Your truck is beautiful! I cannot believe how good the condition is. Thanks for the post!

My dad had this same pick up. Without a doubt the most reliable, durable and with great fuel economy! Original engine and tranny lasted for 15 years of hard work. So many memories!

The 2.2L L-series diesel was used on the 1981-83 models. It was available for four-wheel-drive models as well starting in 1983. Then for 1984, the 2.2L was replaced by the 2.4L 2L-series. For 1985, the turbocharged 2LT version was added, but both diesels would disappear after that year. 1985 was also the final year 4x4 models had a solid axle.

@Mechknight7312 жыл бұрын
Very possible. That's a common Australian conversion. If you're planning on doing it to a 4wd Hilux, then the original gearbox and transfer case isn't strong enough. However, a Landcruiser driveline is. It's a snug fit, but it works. Another conversion commonly done is the Chevy V6. Australian versions have used Holden inline sixes, and even Buick 3.8 V6 engines. The latter were used on Holden Commodores, but used as RWD mounted engines

My first vehicle was a '81 Toyota Diesel with a 5-speed. I drove that thing everywhere, it got 28/34 mpg. My only complaint was that it was VERY slow. A little turbocharger and intercooler would really wake it up nicely.

If you can't find them locally, use what we call in Australia the "grey import" market; that's where you have a similar model in Japan, and many of the parts will interchange. It depends on exactly what parts you need, as there were a lot of them sold as diesels in Australia. Today, about 80% of all Toyota commercial vehicles sold in Australia are diesels.

I have to wonder what the hell Toyota were thinking. When Toyota introduced diesel engines in Australia, they just never stopped. Today they still outsell gasoline engined units by a very large margin. Importing them isn't a problem from either Japan or Australia. Importing a secondhand engine from Japan will likely be cheaper, but Australia has the modification skills when it comes to outfitting them as four wheel drives

What bothers me is the reason American car makers use for discontinuing a car or an engine. I've heard all sorts of lame excuses, "Diesel has no place in North America", "Diesel is unreliable", "There's no business case for compact trucks with diesel" bullshit like that. How the hell do they determine what people will buy, or want to buy? That doesn't make any sense.

How is that possible?

It seems unforgivable that Toyota never offered diesel here in the USA past the mid 1980s. Who the hell decides what vehicles are allowed to be offered with diesel and what vehicles are not? We have heavy duty trucks like the Hino, the Mitsubishi Fuso, the UD Diesel, and the Isuzu heavy duty trucks (probably sold under the Holden brand in Australia). If they can be offered with diesel engines, then why the hell can't a small truck, like the Toyota Tacoma (Hilux), the Nissan Frontier (Navarro),

If you were to do a chemical breakdown of what's in burnt unleaded fumes, as opposed to diesel fumes, there's a lot more toxins in unleaded than diesel. Diesel only "appears" to be more toxic because you can see it
@4everdiesel15 жыл бұрын
they are very rare, but once in a blue moon someone list them on Ebay or Craigslist, most of these trucks are rusted, so it will be worth it to pay top dollars if you find it in the west coast ,
@Mechknight7311 жыл бұрын
Yet they forget that just about every commercial vehicle above a certain tonnage runs on diesel. In Japan there's even diesel Corollas. It doesn't help that federal laws make it unviable to build diesel engined smaller vehicles. Something about road taxes I believe. If this wasn't so, Toyota would be the first ones to import them. Australia may tax fuel, but there's no real restrictions on diesel engines other than emissions standards for the model year
@MaPee198214 жыл бұрын
If everything is original, that's in damn good condition. Did you swap out the 22R for a diesel engine, or did the diesel come stock? I have the same exact year/model but with chrome bumper and grill and in white. I was wondering if it's possible to swap the 22R out for a chevy 350 small block?
@ClassicTVMan1981X2 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are the DIESEL badges on the front fenders.
@Mechknight7311 жыл бұрын
So I hear, it's got something to do with some idiotic federal government policy about diesel engines. It's quite all right to have a truck, a locomotive or an earthmover with a large diesel engine, but some peanut in federal Congress seems to think that because diesels are too fuel efficient, they don't earn their shre of road taxes. At least that's the gist of what I heard

Iromically, diesels are cleaner in emissions than petrol engines. While you see "black smoke" from a diesel, what makes it black is all fine carbon particles, that are harmless when they land
