Hi Jeremy N, I have been trying to wire a switch to a relay for my led lights I’m using in my stereo build. I know how to wire the lights to the relay, I am having the hardest time wiring the switch to the relay. I am using a 5pin switch button, I’m only wanting my lights to come on when my car is running and I press the button. Any help you could provide, I’d be sincerely grateful. Switch has Blue marked NC White as NO Green as Common Red + Black -

I love it. I wire relays in as kill switches. Looking at the wiring diagrams for that car. Cutting into the power to the fuel pump from the fuel pump relay to pins 30 and 86. Pin 87 continues the circuit to the pump. Pin 85 goes to the hidden switch , the other side of the switch is hooked to ground. On some I use 87A to power a horn under the drivers seat so if the ignition is turned on with the kill switch off the horn under the drivers seat goes off. I normally try to get the 130db horns from the cheap tool store.

So, when I turn the ignition on, one wire gets the 100% led lights on. As soon as I turn the park lights in, it will switch to 50%. This helped me visually understand what I need to do 😀😀

I really appreciate you creating this video. It helped me understand the typical relay circuit I needed for my project. An improvement to this demonstration could be showing the switch receiving power from a lower amp 12v source, say your fuse box, instead of (1:31) showing it coming out of the same fuse powering the light. You could use an 18ga wire to power the second fused line all the way to the switch and thru to the relay (coming from the same battery but routed outside of the video frame). The power feeding the light could be a 14ga wire from the battery clamp all the way to the light. This way, you could visually demonstrate how a low amp switch could power a higher amp device. Also, you could make the wire from the switch to the relay be really long and coiled up to demonstrate how you can use a single cheap long thin wire to control a device that requires a more expensive thicker shorter wire. I bought a 5-pin relay because that was all they had at the auto parts store. Thanks for explaining 87A. I won't need it for my project, but its good to know what it's for. This would have been a good time to introduce to your audience the terms "normally open" and "normally closed." Thanks for sharing your knowledge. -Jimmy

Great explanation! I have a question, I want to wire my fans to continue to run as needed on a temp sensor after I turn my engine off. so when I shut off my engine the power to my fan relay is off, I want the secondary power to come on to continue to cool off my engine. Any suggestions/tips on how to wire that up?
@WiringRescue4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video! I think you should consider one of these adjustable fan switches instead: shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/imperial-adjustable-thermostatic-fan-control-226204/3670006-p You can adjust them to turn on at any temp, and you can wire it to be on all the time (read below). One word of warning though. The reason that almost no cars come with this feature is because it’s dangerous when you are working on the car. If the fan decides to turn on when you are wrenching under the hood, it could really injure somebody. So - I would always recommend wiring it to the ignition power instead. That way it will never turn on when your car is off.

I left a comment that i built a remote control lawn mower. Now I used a 5 pin relay tied to a single 120amp 4 pin relay. This relay is for power and 5 pin relay for grounding engine to shut down via Transmitter. Every thing wired up as the original main wire from coil to enigine break lever on the engine to bteak and short the engine to shut down. I left it intact as plan B. Yank an attached wire to the lever to kill engine. I tapped into this wire and ran it to 87a then wired another wire to ground and ran to pin 87. When rc relay is swiched on by the switch on the transmiter the pin 30 on 5 pin relay will ground out. Not good when you need the engine running, but when power is turned off pin 87a is now ground and the engine shuts down. It works !!! But when power back on throwing ground back to pin 30 ( nothing is attached to it ) engine wont start un less i unplug pin 87a and cycle power on and off plug wire back onto 87a after restartin engine. Will function again as a kill switch. Thinking of installing a arm switch to turn 87a off to grnd then turn on after starting engine. Failsafe on receaver is set to shut down power and engine if loss of signal and power don't want it taking off. If you or others have any further ideas thanks.

@@dailydosedetermination yes and no. The fuse size is determined by what you are powering, like light bulbs in this example. You also need a relay that is sized appropriately for the circuit.
