nice demo jody, it would be nice if you can educate people about welding wire and shielding gas/gases mixture as they have dramatic effect on weld penetration as well as on tensile properties and its also important for people to know to use the right wire for this position as not all the wires are manufactured to use in all positions welding.

thank you for all the refresher tips. been out of school a while and only use bare wire with 75/25 shielding in this area. have a weld test tomorrow and this helped brush up on flux core. makes me proud to see welders helping welders make more money. here in Arkansas companies do there best to keep wages low. So the onlh people they hire are half ass "welders" and I use the title loosely, because they consider themselves welders b/c they can pull a trigger and make a stringer that I would consider embarrassing if I did it. anyway.... thanx again.

if you're doing any kind of test, dropping it in water will guarantee you to fail as when you bend it it will snap in half. if it's just for your practice,then you can do that. but never do it on. any test

thats the reason jody is keep on saying that follow the wps. because you have the restrictions in pre heat and interpass temperature in order to control distortion. Dropping mild steel in water can cause a serious demage to metarial's grain structure.

Clip a little piece of cloth on the wire or stick the wire through a little foam ear plug in between the spool and the drive rollers. It'll clean off the white oxidation that builds up on dual shield wires and might help.

Great video, once again. I was just wondering what shielding gas ratio you were using, because, typically, more CO2 equals a bit more penetration, which may require a bit less voltage per wire feed speed. My experience with a wire feed process has been just point and shoot, but with less forgiveness on machine parameters.

Can any mig machine run dual shield FC?? Say a 140a machine with .035" wire?? Or do you need spray arc type, high voltages to get by?
@crankyjew2d28 жыл бұрын
nope. a machine that small won't be able to manage the voltage needed to run dual shield. 035 dual shield is going to want around 20v, at least. even if a smaller machine can produce the voltage, duty cycle at wide open becomes an issue. if you need to get as much as you can out of that machine, run self-shielded on 220v service.

That elbow-arm shield would have came in handy many times for all the overhead tests and welding over the years. Especially testing! Once you start the test and you get going good and molting metal drips down and is burning the crap out of you and all you can do grin and bare it until the end of the pass.

Please. I beg you please stop using backing straps. Either an open root with solid wire on 1G-6G and with flux core with a ceramic tile. Also would appreciate if you could do a butt weld with a bulbar on the on the overhead position with a tile.
@Steelcrafted8 жыл бұрын
Why stop using backing straps if that is what the test calls for?? This is structural steel code...not pipe...
@TheGazjam8 жыл бұрын
+Nathan Hamler I honestly just want to see something different rather than using a backing strap as not all tests require it and most of the time you are asked to use either a ceramic tile for 1G-4G for flux core root and no tile/backing strap for the solid wire root process on 1G-6G.
@weldingtipsandtricks8 жыл бұрын
I think it would help everyone to know what industry you work you in? Shipyard, Ironworker? I actually called Triangle Engineering prior to shooting this video to get some feedback on the most commonly used test plates based on what they sell. 22.5 deg with backing plates was the winner...so thats the reason for me using the backing. it seems to be the most commonly given plate test...at least in the USA. I have heard of 2 other methods that some shops use for testing and one of them is using ceramic for backing ... the other is to use no backing and after the plate is welded from the face side ...back gouge or grind ...and then weld from the root side to achieve a full pen weld.
@DansBeard8 жыл бұрын
+weldingtipsandtricks I'm from the uk and worked in places from shipyards to bridging works. I'm currently working as a welding instructor and we always teach our students an open root unless doing a flux core test as this just happens to been our standard. However I think an open root is more difficult to produce and have had to do them previously with all processes. Open root used to be the standard way once upon a time. Current standard 9606 calls for a backing bar. I have heard it's been modified recently to accommodate "newbies" and make it easier and boost employment/trade etc. I don't know how much truth is behind that. In my opinion open root is more difficult then burning into a backing strip. You could also (as you mentioned) gouge the root out and put a signal run in then have a full pen weld, You can't do this with a backing bar. Think you should give it ago regardless Jody. 😄
@TheGazjam8 жыл бұрын
+weldingtipsandtricks Mainly based in Shipyards in the UK, where its all link ups thats over here and never once had the opportunity to use a backing strap on any test or job seems as tho its all ceramic tiles with Flux core or solid wire and a gap and back gouge it. Just think it would be beneficial to your audience to show them different variations of rooting with a tile as a few things can go wrong if not properly done right. Cheers Jody
