Very few people mention to preheat the test plate before welding or not to let the plate get too hot between passes.

You only preheat metal that is 3/4 inch thick and above. 1/2inch no pre heat needed. If you do you gonna have it dripping down like hell

Yeah it's funny I work in the nuclear world where we test out 1in plate and don't preheat it bfor test I don't know why but that's what the do but in the field you have to preheat anything 3/4 are better
@toddjuneau4702 Жыл бұрын
I preheat 1/2" & above after im all tacked up & set to weld. You dont have to heat it blazing hot but what you want to do is "sweat the iron" meaning you can be in a 115 degree test shop & if you preheat it, i guarantee you will see moisture bleeding out of the plate. What this does is not only help eliminate Non fusion but help the metal filler bond better with the parent metal. When I test on heavy plate or pipe i normally will use a temp stick but you can cheat by when the iron starts smoking or if your testing out on tool steel material it will change colors.Another thing your pre heating for is to avoid "Nickel Inclusions". On a break test they will show up when the parent metal & the filler material are not hot enough to blend in. Always try to run as hot as you can hancle it without blowing "buck shot" everywheres or putting most of your filler metal on the floor instead of your test. Best things most times is following the WPS. I've tested out on jobs where they're so nit picky about heat input that a inspector will shoot your test specimen with a gun after every pass. They will give you a tolerance but most times its not very much. Also don't try to "hog" the iron in, run as many multiple passes in as possiable. Hogging in the iron will alot of times guarantee you to trap slag. Preheat, run as many multiple passes as you can or allowed to do, keep it clean & be courteous to the inspector or the Q.C. They can make or break you on a test for the simplest mistake that is actually passable but still gives them the right to bust you.

I loved this test out of all the processes I’ve done, this one was relaxing for some reason. I don’t know if it was the sound or the smoothness of the welds after they were finished but it was my favorite.

Don't take the test-welder's equipment for granted when you go in to test. Nothing burns like getting halfway through your root pass to discover the guy before you plugged half the gas-ports in your diffuser with overhead BB's even though the tip and visible portion of the nozzle looked clean. Always pull the nozzle off and make sure the diffuser ports are clean, and that your insulator is in good condition in addition to setting your contact-tip distance. A bad insulator makes putting in your first few passes on a 1" plate test feel like playing Operation, and you end up focusing on not brushing the faces of the bevel instead of watching your bead.

Also DON'T use "open ended" hand protectors, when doing overhead fluxcore. As the slag falling off will get caught in the open end. Use closed ended "mit" type protection.

When you have welded for 45 yrs. You tend to get certified in a lot of different metals such as aluminum stainless steel alloy 360 Encinal and chromoly. . I have put in 20 years of offshore welding with stick Rod 7018 filler on pipes for flow lines and use 6010 to put the beads in the root pass. Also use mig wire TIG welding in flux core. Yes I am a old timer ✌♾️💯

I know that for the root pass the wire speed and volts should be on the higher side for better penetration and because the plate is cold. But as the passes stack, are the settings changed? Is there any benefit to lower wft and volts? Or to keep the same?
@wicklash90652 жыл бұрын
If the heat feels like its starting to get too hot. Most times i just run the same settings the full way through. Maybe just a 0.2 of a volt every two or three passes.

Richard, it's a bit confusing because he is not running gas-less flux cored wire like the one you are using. Most of these videos on WeldTube they use gas-shielded flux cored wire. These are E71T-1C or E71T-1C/1M. 1C = 100% CO2 shielding. 1C/1M = 100% CO2 or C25 gas shielding. It is a completely different animal than gas-less flux cored wire.
