Welcome to Tanjai Big Temple, an awe-inspiring masterpiece nestled in the heart of Tanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India. Also known as the Brihadeeswarar Temple or the Peruvudaiyar Kovil, this ancient temple stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and architectural brilliance of the Chola dynasty.
Built over a thousand years ago in the 11th century by the great Chola emperor, Raja Raja Chola I, Tanjai Big Temple is a true marvel of engineering and artistry. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the destroyer and transformer of the universe, and showcases the grandeur and devotion of the Chola rulers.
Prepare to be mesmerized as you enter the temple complex, greeted by a towering gateway adorned with intricate carvings that depict scenes from Hindu mythology. The main shrine, dedicated to Lord Brihadeeswarar (another form of Lord Shiva), stands tall at an astonishing height of over 60 meters, making it one of the tallest temple structures in the world.
The temple's architectural brilliance lies in its perfect harmony and proportion. The main vimana (tower) is constructed using granite blocks, meticulously stacked to create a magnificent structure. The top of the vimana is adorned with a massive monolithic cupola weighing around 81 tons, believed to have been placed there using an inclined plane and the sheer strength of human effort.
As you explore the temple complex, you'll encounter numerous mandapas (halls) and shrines dedicated to various deities. Each of these structures showcases exquisite carvings and sculptures, portraying gods, goddesses, celestial beings, and scenes from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
The temple's central court features a massive Nandi (sacred bull), carved out of a single granite rock, facing the main shrine. This Nandi statue is one of the largest in India, measuring about 16 feet in height and 20 feet in length.
Tanjai Big Temple is not just a religious site but a living heritage that has stood the test of time. It has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding universal value and cultural significance.

@@jonsantos6056 bro,not like that its proved,during British period they planned to do a measurements and elevation of big temple for that they layed a scaffolding around the temple,the machine weight is more than 1 ton unexpectedly it fell down in the side of the temple,they tried to make ready but they failed, later they fixed this chinese and British cap man,you will come to know this when you visit the temple, there is lot differences in old and new stones. Regarding "YAZHI" as the guide mentioned it's totally wrong because "YAZHI" was present in "KUMARIKANDAM" now it is fully immersed in sea at present "KANYAKUMARI " please read the books which written by genuine author instead of blaming others.
