An interesting tidbit: the route taken by this train until the early 1970's were JNR trains still polled by JNR Class C62 steam locomotives. The current route from Hakodate to Sapporo via Muroran only happened the Seikan Tunnel initially opened in 1988.

Yeah many people taking pictures, even with a "mascot" (Apologies for my ignorance). Seems to be some kind of special event. Would be great to get some background info!
