The CBD and South East Light Rail is a partly-opened Australian light rail line in Sydney, New South Wales, running from Circular Quay at the northern end of the central business district to the south-eastern suburbs of Randwick and Kingsford. It is part of Sydney's light rail network. Major construction commenced in October 2015. The project is being managed by Transport for NSW.
Passenger services between Circular Quay and Randwick, known as the L2 Randwick Line, commenced on 14 December 2019.
I enjoyed traveling to Randwick with a friendly crew.

Looks pretty decent, but still, electric bus get more and more common, this kind of public transport train will be history sooner or latter.

If I was the driver, I would probably say, " I'm very sorry but I just ran out of track so you'll have to walk from here?" Maybe I might play End of the line by "The travelling Wilbury's"

How does that 3rd rail work? Noticed that when the 3rd rail disappears, an overhead wire appears.

@@scottcopper_1 I was wanting to know that exact same thing. Do they also have points like train tracks to change direction as well as it looks like the points don't move.

@@scottcopper_1 Thank you for the explanation. I was wondering how they could energize the third rail without electrocuting pedestrians.

@@lkytdsvc Now this is something I am familiar with. Some switches are designed as "spring switches". Here's a simple explanation. Suppose you have a passing siding along a single line and you want trains to be able to pass without having to manually throw the switch. At one end of the siding the switch will normally be lined for straight track and the other end will be normally lined for the siding. So one train goes straight and the other goes into the siding. As they depart, the switch points are moved by the wheels of the train to allow passage and spring back to normal afterwards. One thing you can NOT do is back up once you have started across the spring switch because that would cause one end of the car straddling the switch to go up the wrong track and cause a derailment. When needed, spring switches can still be changed manually.

@@GLICKMIRE Thank you Jerry for that explanation and I understand that principal. So that would mean then. they would be kind of directional spring points or one way valve if you like. Quite ingenious I have to say. They would not be used in high speed situations I guess.

@asama189
@asama189 4 жыл бұрын
ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%9C%B0%E8%A1%A8%E9%9B%86%E9%9B%BB%E6%96%B9%E5%BC%8F

There should be no danger, the segments are powered only when the tram is above them.

This is a high-quality public transit investment and installation - BUT - it is S O P A I N F U L L Y S L O W ! There is no transit signal priority, so the trams are forced to waste countless minutes of precious time stopped at street intersections. Even where the trams could go faster, they are being operated in what I can only describe as a VERY cautious, even TIMID, fashion. There is NO way that a TRANSPORT SYSTEM this slow is going to lure riders away from driving their cars, taking a faster bus, or hiring a Uber, Lyft or taxi if they need to reach their destinations in a timely manner. They will take one ride on it, shake their heads in disbelief and laugh it off as an example of poor planning and implementation. I hope the slowness so evident in this video is temporary until the operators become used to the new system, and that we are viewing it in its "break-in" phase. Despite my disappointment in what should be a promising new transit development in Sydney, I thank you, r.f. aunz, for making the effort to bring us this informative and very high-quality video.
