4K cab view footage of the entire Circular Quay to Juniors Kingsford section of Australia's Sydney Light Rail L3 Kingsford line, which opened in April 2020.
The line starts at Circular Quay third gauge (above-ground collection), switches to overhead wire collection at Town Hall, passes through an underground tunnel just before Moore Park and arrives at the end of the line at Kingsford Junior, the bus facing transfer station.
The day was an interesting ride with a friendly driver.

Nice to see light rail in my old home town But it painfully slow, doesn't seem to have any priority over the cars . It's good to see the units double banked though, they could seriously shift a LOT of passengers.

Who on Earth wants to be on a mode on public transport that is SO slow. I caught this very service earlier this year and was not impressed. You can see from this video how "fast" it is........ Sorry I don't have time as a commuter to be on a form of transportation that has an average speed of less than 35km per hour. The route only picks up speed once the tram gets beyond Surry Hills. Thanks but no thanks.

What a wonderful laid-back impression of what I call a tram, in stately progress through a large city, with people wandering around the CBD at a leisurely pace in beautiful sunshine. It is an enviable example for citizens of more frenetic cities around the globe.

@williamstringer6519
@williamstringer6519 Жыл бұрын
@@AustNRail I am intrigued by your comment. Why is it crap? My only memory of the Sydney tram system, as an eighty-year-old occasional visitor to Sydney was from the old days when Sydney even had those rather small double deck busses as well as charming trams including the whimsically entitled "toast racks". I feel obliged to mention Melbourne here, as it has the largest tram system in the world, which I find very impressive.
@louiscypher4186
@louiscypher4186 Жыл бұрын
@@williamstringer6519 Because it costs shit tonnes, took yonks to build and despite being given the right of way it's slower then the bus used to take. In fact it cost so much more money then they said it would that they cut bus services to justify the cost. So we paid more money for a slower service just because trams are currently "hip" and in a decade or two we'll be forking out billions again to replace the electrical equipment. They could have made this route a dedicated bus lane for a fraction of the price in half the time and achieved higher speeds. Also the fact they call it "light rail" is cringe and deserves to be hated simply for following yanky terminology.

The electricity is generated from the overhead cables, which you will see at the beginning. The tram only collects energy for a bit of time, before lowering the pantograph. So to answer your question, no, as the rails don’t contain any electricity, and the wires are safely protected
@njz1
@njz1 3 ай бұрын
@@BobJnekinsThis is actually not true for the city section of the L2/L3, which run on a unique system of third rail electrification, and is visible as the metal bit between the tracks in the beginning. This then swaps at town hall station, where the trams put up their pantographs to collect overhead power. To answer the initial question, I think there is some sort of electrical protection to allow them to work in rain, although I think it is designed in a way that large puddles are unable to form due to drainage and the design of the surrounding area.

Its great to see the tramway 'in action', not least because I'm in London UK and cannot get to see it for myself. But, the speed limits look like something out of a dystopian horror film ... so slow ... no wonder journeys often take longer than the buses (as per other comments) and the tramway has not been performing as well as it really should be. More than anything else the one thing that will make the system more enticing is for all speed limits around the system to be at least 10km/h higher - in some places even more!

@@simplesimon2802 For the tunnel with those curves, a reduced speed would probably be necessary, though I think the current speed is still too slow. The traffic separated sections could have block signalling for higher speeds with boom gates at crossings, that's what is done in many light rail systems throughout the world, though it depends on the frequency of the trams.

It's interesting how there's no spider web of cables above! Maybe it's different between trams and light rails, but in Zurich, all trams source electricity from cables in the air, so junctions are very messy. How is safety guaranteed with the electricity sourced from the ground (presumably from the middle rail?)

Hello Fox, the construction of the light rail in Sydney cost a fortune, more than it should have and took far longer to build than expected. It has two sources of electric power supply. The below electrical cost the tax payers far more per kilometre, for superficial reasons, not practical, it was installed. Sydney had the largest tram network in the world up to around 1962, the then corrupt government shut it all down over night, an autocratic political decision that has had terrible results up to now. It is great to get just a small part of the tram network back after so many years, it makes sense for so many people. It is a shame it terminates at Kingfordsmith (on Anzac Parade), the tram used to go all the way to La Perouse along Anzac parade once. Melbourne kept their tram system, which is now the largest in the world today.

electric - overhead wires (mostly) and a roadway power supply system in the city centre - the electric 'track' is split in to short sections and these are only energised when the tram is travelling above and special safety systems double check that the power is off afterwards.. The system is very safe - I've actually walked on the tracks when there were no trams about, albeit in the first city to use this power supply system - Bordeaux, in France

It's still too slow. A bus could have covered this route in about 15 mins if this was a dedicated busway lane instead of the rails. There needs to be more barriers to prevent people just crossing anywhere, and have dedicated crossings for pedestrians in the city area.

Sydney needs to do what Melbourne did years ago with tram safety advertisements that likened trams to a rhino on a skateboard. a big, heavy thing moving fast on a fixed path "if a rhinoceros on a giant skateboard was heading your way, you'd want to move out of the way, wouldn't you? well guess what, a tram weighs as much as 30 rhinos so it's not something you want to get hit by" tram-pedestrian collisions decreased by something like 40% after that campaign was put in place
