4K CABVIEW: Afternoon train to Bergen through the New Tunnel

Taking the train from Voss to Bergen through the New Tunnel on this January afternoon.
The train arrived 15 minutes late to Voss. Since the load on the line is high in the afternoons the chance of making up for the lost time was virtually 0. Atleast I'm able to make sure that I don't delay the other trains further.
We'll be going though the New Ulriken tunnel three times on this tirp, and I've added information at each run.
If you see an increased image quality that might be because I'm testing out a Canon CN-E 24mm T1.5 cinema lens.

I've been putting on a rail journey through Norway at my job for a few weeks now. Due to the locos excellent lights and your new lens the detail in the tunnels is excellent. In the longer, newer tunnels there are caverns cut into the side of the tunnels. These would be primarily for maintenance storage and as a refuge. But are at least some of these caverns connected to the outside (either vertical or horizontal;) for ventilation and possibly emergency exit? The new tunnel at Bergen-Arna has the old tunnel as both ventilation and emergency exit but the other, older long tunnels 'appear' not to have this facility.

Are you asking or are you confirming? because, there are no vertical shafts in these tunnels, and there are no exits from them. the "cavers" dug into sides are places where they stored equipment and increased space for technical installations. :) The tunnels between Arna and Bergen are only connected with the emergency pass through door at the moment. These doors are closed at all times (not locked). in 2024/25 the old will be opened again for train traffic after rehabilitation. The ventilation in both tunnels are natural, except for the installed fans in the new one that can direct airflow and is used if there is smoke in the tunnel. :D

At the very start, as you leave Voss, there is a loco with normal carriages parked. I though these trains only did Bergin-Oslo express. What decides whether a train uses the Flirts vs the loco/carriages ? (also who made the Carriages?) . And at the end, when you do a Bergin/Arna/Bergin, you are driving a Flirt with "Vossbanen" livery. I can understand the Flåm railways having dedicated equipment with Flåmbanen, but am curious on why Trains out of Bergin would be Vossbanen. I thought the whole Oslo-Bergin services were owned by same company? In your "live" stream of videos, there are still a lot of videos with the Orange Flirts. Are there any left or is everything rebranded to Vossbana on the line? (BTW, do any Flirts do Bergin to Oslo?). . Is there a reason the speed limit insude new tunnel TO Bergin ia 160 but when going to Arna, it is only 120? . Going to Arna, I am surprised that the left track which starts in tunnel ends up as a dead end platform. I would have expected that the first 2 tracks built would go through Arna and offer 2 "full service" platforms to increase capacity so a train coming from Voss can wait for right to enter tunnel at the station, with a separate track to let train in tunnel exit and head towards Voss.

Hey RCG, question for you: I was watching another train vid, obviously taken before construction was started on the new Ulriken tunnel, and there were buildings (houses?) where the track leads into the new tunnel, at the Bergen end. What happened to those buildings? Did the government expropriate the land or buy the owners out, or did the railway purchase the property, or what? Curious to know how such things would be handled in Norway, thanks in advance for your answer!

Bergen, in the Vestland County, doesn't get a lot of snow. It's near the Gulfstream current which keeps the climate relatively mild in the winter. Rains a lot though. One of the wettest cities, it gets more than twice the amount of rainfall as Seattle....LOL.

Voss have had very little snow this winter, compared to what we should have. Before Christmas there was only a few days with snow. A few days ago we had about 30 cm of snowfall, and that's the most we have had all season. In the winter of 2016/2017 we had over a meter snow in Voss. Bergen does not have much snow usually, they are known for the rain. One year it rained for 3 months straight... Would not want to live there, lol.

@@pambrown8697 Depends on where you are in Norway. I was at a hikers cabin in the Faemundsmarka National Park (south central Norway near the Swedish border) on a July 4th one year. At 2:00 am it was still light enough outside to read a newspaper and it started to snow....LOL. The locals were calling it a "green winter" that summer.

OMG... Reaching the point where we can identify the moths flitting around the station lights lol. BTW: I thought I recognised the Green Cargo loco... There are ten of these in service in the UK as Bi-modals (Electric/Diesel) - although the diesel is quite low powered.(They are designated Class 88). There are rumours of a second batch however, with a much more powerful diesel. They will be 'tri-modal' too as they have Lithium-Oxide batteries. The mind boggles regarding the technology involved as these batteries require liquid cooling! They will be designated 'Class 93' when/if the order goes ahead.

Hi there! I was reading news now, and there was pretty weird one: today was the first working day of the first female train driver in our country. That's pretty strange, 'cause they've sent a woman into space about 60 years ago, and also our tram drivers are mostly women... well, guess it's because our train drivers got to do some dirty work, like to fix their train's engines by themselves? well, maybe now they are not any more? idk. my grandpa was working at the soviet railroads all his life. That's some serious glass you acquired. I shoot Canon and appreciate good prime optics. Are you seeing any funding from the rail group? This level of optics is on par with what they would expect for a commercial level travel series. It's not like this is clandestine by any means, what is the arrangement that you have with the rail management that allows you to post without much visible direction on their part? It would be interesting to hear that side of how you're able to post with their tacit permission and how they allowed it to get to this level. It certainly works well for them. Are you independent or is this a quiet, side project from the rail administration? Either way it's still fascinating. Is this part of your story posted anywhere? I do not understand why your rules limit the use of the horn at road crossings. It seems very minimal and I imagine people are frequently hit by the train because they did not hear you coming. Here in the U.S. we have much longer (more annoying?) horn usage and even with that, we frequently kill people at crossings.
