These cabview videos are wonderful! Love to put them on the 4K big screen. I was a passenger on the Bergen to Oslo run in September, 1973. Rode up front as a passenger with my BMW motorcycle stowed in the baggage car. I rode the bike from Kristiansand to Bergen and they were just starting to get snow in the mountain passes. No way was I going to try riding a motorcycle over those mountains to Oslo....LOL. Scenery in Norway is spectacular. Bought the BMW at the factory in Munich and rode 7,000 miles around Europe in two months. Tusen takk.

Happy New Year. Also, congratulations on the opening of the new tunnel. I watched the video with great interest. Thank you very much. At Arna station, trains cannot pass each other at present, but it seems that we will add another line in the future. Also, will the old tunnel be rebuilt and eventually double-tracked? The tunnel technology in Japan, where I live, is amazing, but I'm impressed that it's also amazing in Norway.
@RailCowGirl3 жыл бұрын
Happy new year! 🎉🎉 That is correct :) The old tunnel is closed for upgrades for the next two years. At the same time they are reconstructing the old part of Arna station and when everything is completed, there will be a tunnel for each direction as well as much more flexible station.

First a happy new year! We hope to see many videos of you again this year. I have been waiting for the video of the new tunnel, and what a result! Happy New Year! ❤️🎉🎉🎉🎉 The K5-project will result in a new double track from Arna to Voss at some point. It will result in two long tunnels with just out in the open air at Stanghelle and Arna. Been waiting for this tunnel for a long time. Nice to see it finally open. And hopefully renovations of the old tunnel completes soon and there will be two tunnels for this stretch. Though, at times I wonder, since Norway is currently in the works of spending a fair few billion on a new motorway from Stavanger to Bergen, then wouldn't it have been nice to also put some rail alongside that road and get a connection there as well. Any thoughts?
@Sondrebol3 жыл бұрын
I've wondered about that as well. Apparently, the reason is the planned tunnel beneath the fjord (Rogfast) is far too steep for a railway.
@jonathanj83033 жыл бұрын
Hei RCG, a long awaited video, good to see trains running through at last. Been a wait, huh? At the Arna end of the tunnel, about signal 1095, where the double track ends, there's an obvious wider 'cavern' with switches, blank walls and what look like they'll become junctions to the old tunnel. Assuming that's right, the one facing Bergen is presumably so that trains can access the old tunnel from the current Arna platforms? And the Arna facing one would connect with the old tunnel's exit. What's long term purpose of the spur to the old exit? For freight trains to avoid the platform area, or will Arna Station be moving back to it's original site again? I know the station building is being rebuilt.
@RailCowGirl3 жыл бұрын
The purpose is to be able to cross over from the New Tunnel over to the old part of the station, and going from the new part into the old tunnel when it is opened again in 2 years. That way there will be two tunnels one with 160kmh (new one) and the old one will still be 130kmhy due to the profile.

Neat! How far is the new tunnel offset from the old? Are there lateral crossover passages? (emergency egress) Guessing the tunnel walls are sprayed-on concrete, couldn't tell if there might be bare rock anywhere.
@RailCowGirl3 жыл бұрын
Not sprayed on concrete, these are slabs fused as the TBM was working its way through. The passages to the left goes into the old tunnel that will be upgraded over the next two years and reopen. The they are almost identical in length, so not much. Think it's around 100m or so.
@paulliebenberg34103 жыл бұрын
@@RailCowGirl I've seen in other TBM tunnels where they use concrete panels, this just looked a bit too lumpy for that. Maybe they're being extruded in place? (Or maybe that's what you mean as "fused"?)

@@RailCowGirl Isn't this tunnel in hard rock, where you don't need the concrete slabs, just some shotcrete for water insulation? At least at the cross passages, it looks like the walls are formed out of the rock itself. At any rate, it's smooth as hell compared to the old tunnel.

If you have Station A - Station B. Between those two stations there can be only ONE train traveling in one direction at the time. If you have a train leaving Station A, you can not send a train out after it before it reaches Station B. But with a block post in between Station A and Station B. You can send the next train as soon as Train 1 has passed the Block Post, making it possible to to have two trains traveling in the same direction between the stations at the same time. Add another block post and you can have three trains going in the same direction at the same time :) Hope this made sense :D

I was wondering this too. A rough calculation puts these doors about every 500m assuming they are evenly spaced and the travel speed was indeed 160km/hr (my math was done using the time index around the 13:20 mark).

So all those videos of you going through the old tunnels sicne Deccember 13 were fake? :-) So many questions. Leaving Arna, there are 2 tracks entering tunnel and then some sort of yard, switches etc in wide areas of tunnel, and he right side abruptly ends. Will this be tunneled to connect to old tunnel so the right track will go from new tunnel to old one ? Will the old tunnel portal at Arna still be in use ? On the Bergin side, Seems odd that they "force" the new tunnel onto the old right of way instead of already having built 2 tracks betwene Bergin station and tunnels. This doesn't leave much room for them to stage construction equiopment for the rebuilding of old tunnel. With the new tunnel, have they updated schedules to increase Bergin-Arna frequency yet, or is the higher speed inside tunnel not significant enough to increase frequency? last year, you mentioned the line would move to ETCS. Is the new tunnel already equipped with ETCS or will that be added when they get to upgrade the area?
@Daneelro3 жыл бұрын
Interesting you ask about ETCS because I just noticed the balises in the video (EBICAB?). What I found interesting that at a lot of places (combined main/advance signals?), the balises come in threes, not in pairs.
@RailCowGirl3 жыл бұрын
1. In the part called Arna Vest there will be cross overs to the old parts of Arna Station and the Old tunnel when the upgrades are complete. The whole station and track arrangements will be very different from what it used to be. Like mentioned in the description (who bothers reading them anyways) the Old Ulriken will be closed for 2 years for upgrades. 2. They have to do it that way, or else there would be no chance for freight trains to pull from the Terminal and on to the Minde-track then back to a departure track. This is something that is hopefully going to be improved with the a new freight terminal as well. The new tunnel is done, but it's not the end of the construction, we're probably only 1/3 of done. 3. There has already been minor adjustments to the schedule, but since it's still just one tube it has to be timed with all other trains as well. But the increased speed gives us more flexibility to get things back on schedule. When both tunnels are open we have increased the amount of traffic possible with 6 times if you want to run it completely on the limit (Not advicable). 70% usage and 30% as buffer in case something happens. But knowing the white collars too well.. they want bang for bucks and it will be utilized 120% and if a tran breaks down then three trains will be trapped behind it :p 4. the signaling system is ready for ETCS conversion. End of 2023 is now a too optimistic projection.

@railcowgirl now that the TBM is in use, are they going to re-bore any of the older tunnels or just use it for new tunnels?
@RailCowGirl3 жыл бұрын
The TBM is already out of the country again.

What are the stub tracks inside the tunnel near Arna for? Some upcoming connection towards the old tunnel? PS: It would be cool to catch a shot of one of those emergency exit points.

You should watch my newer videos, and you'll see that those are now connected to the exit from the old tunnel. :) The old tunnel will open this spring after 2 years of upgrades

@@RailCowGirl The most recent one was that Christmas 2023 one. I didn't notice the connection to the old line.
