The weather wasn't quite the soft blankets of white fluffy snow I had imagined, but was amazing to see all the same. I hope to come back another winter to see it in full snow some day.

The charming mountain village of Shirakawago, nestled in the heart of the Japanese Alps. Known for its traditional gassho-zukuri houses, a unique architectural style that resembles hands in prayer, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic cultural experience.
At the end, we'll take a closer look at the famous gassho-zukuri houses, with their steep thatched roofs designed to withstand the heavy snowfall that blankets the region during winter. Inside these cozy homes, we'll see how the villagers live and work, from weaving textiles to farming the land.

It is a really nice sightseeing spot. My grandmother lived in Gifu Prefecture, so I often visited Shirakawago. The snowy scenery in winter is beautiful, but summer is also very nice (except for the heat).

Ah, the town from Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. I went there a couple of years ago, but in spring, so there was no snow anywhere.

Hello, incredible video like all the ones you always do :)... I have a question, what type of material is the one that houses have as roofs? What is that type of roof called? It looks quite robust and it seems that it helps a lot with water and cold. thx

Those are thatched roofs; they're mostly made of (extremely dense) straw. If you go to the English-language Wikipedia and search for an article called "Minka", there's a "Roofing" section that talks a bit more about the different types.

It's closer than some other places, but not really? It's in Western Japan and quite a bit further south on Honshu, sort of above Nagoya.
