Like many of these classic looking watches if only it was 38/39mm. I'd buy one. Same with the black bay (I know there's the BB36 now and I'd like to see a review of that). Hopefully smaller watches are making a comeback.

They most definitely are. 40mm is really about the largest I can generally pull off, with the odd exception. I'm sure this is quite common.

Great video! It would be brilliant if Tudor made this in 36, 38 or 39mm. Inflating it to 41mm makes it lose some of those classic oyster case proportions.

This Watch is lovely. I have tried one on a couple of times. On my small wrist, this Watch wears a little too large for my liking. I was so hoping that Tudor would release a smaller version this year, but there's always next year! In my opinion, this Watch in 36mm to 38mm sizing would be an absolute winner. Not that it is not already, but for the small-wristed population like me, a sub-40mm size would be perfect. And is it too much to ask for one of Tudor's new in-house movements in one of these? I have nothing against the ETA2824-2 movement but a longer power reserve would be nice, too.

41mm on my 9.5” wrist is great. There are plenty of smaller watches to choose from. This watch is also very easy to read for my aging eyes. The date on many watches are unreadable for me. I’m glad this doesn’t have it. This is a beautifully simple watch.

they just brought out the Black bay no bezel 41 mm - but I have a chance of the Ranger at a really great price - just a bit worried its a bit plain. WIll I wear it? Its still a lot of coin for a plain ETA 3 hands watch - does it offer any real value for money?

@@WatchHobbyist Well I finally did pick one up. It is freaking perfect! So different in character to my 39mm Railmaster, and I think it's even nicer. The size is perfect! All these haters on the 41mm size - I don't get it (?) The way they designed it, with the thin lugs and 22mm straight end link bracelet - it's one of the most perfectly balanced, fitting and feeling watches on my 6.9" wrist that I've ever owned. And the dial is perfect (the box sapphire crystal ads another dimension entirely)!! I owned a 39mm Explorer Mk2 and sold it very quickly. The design was quite awful to me, but I can see myself still owning my Ranger when I'm 119 years old :-)

Great review. Although I must add a comment regards to your suggestion about the interchangeable bracelet with the Black Bay. I own the Tudor Black Bay. I contacted Tudor to purchase the Ranger bracelet for my Black Bay. They refused to sell it to me. They actually said it doesn't fit. I then went to an authorised dealer to measure it myself and found it is an exact fit. The AD contacted Rolex Service Centre on my behalf. He was given the reply that Tudor does not allow their straps and bracelets to be interchangeable as they don't want to destroy the integrity of the watch. ....I understand this to some degree BUT I think it's unfair and outrageous. I paid full retail price for the Black Bay and was willing to fork out another $700, yet they still refused to sell it to me, as an existing customer? Now that is bad Swiss service!! These watch companies obviously don't do sales & marketing very well. No wonder they almost got wiped out by the quartz watch revolution. It gives me no choice but to buy a replica Chinese Tudor and use the steel bracelet from a fake watch to put on my original Black Bay. Where's the integrity in that? At the moment I have a cheap $20 olive Nato strap on it. I think it looks great and gives it a military tool watch look but it's also not doing the watch a favour in keeping to the original accessories the company intend. It's like buying a Ferrari but not allowing the customer to upgrade on the wheels, so he puts on non-standard aftermarket ones from K-Mart
@WatchHobbyist
@WatchHobbyist 8 жыл бұрын
That's strange. I actually had no issue if I wanted to purchase the bracelet separately so perhaps it's different from country to country. This sort of practise annoys me; the customer is not always right according to them. We pay so much for these things, we should simply be allowed to make our own choices and decisions.

Interesting that they would have different policies for different countries. I live in Australia and we have a very low demand for the watch market (too small uneducated population). For what its worth, I am going to follow this up and send Tudor/Rolex a letter of complaint. This is an email I received from my local authorised dealer: Hello and good afternoon Terry, It was good to have met you on the weekend and to chat about watches. I have received word from Tudor / Rolex Australia regarding fitting the ranger bracelet for the black bay. They informed me that each bracelet is designed for its case, and that case only. They will not supply bracelets for other watches. From what I understand, this falls under the heading for “after sales alterations”. Many manufacturers don’t want their designs altered. Sorry for the bad news, but I wish you all the best for the week. Stuart.
@WatchHobbyist
@WatchHobbyist 8 жыл бұрын
That's ridiculous. If you fit a leather strap would it cause the watch to be unwearable? What BS. Good on you for complaining.

Thankfully the Abominable snowflake style hour hand is nowhere to be found. What an ill comceived design faux pas. It would prevent me from buying any Tudor watch which displayed it. Design-wise, crown guards would be a very nice addition, and give more character to the case. All in all it gives a very nice presentation on the wrist.

I think it's a bit expensive at 2500 US dollars for a ETA 3 hand watch. A Swiss Army or Tissot with the same movement is a better buy. Now the new 2016 black bay with and in house 70 hour power reserve for 3500 US dollars is a good value and earns its price point!
@WatchHobbyist
@WatchHobbyist 8 жыл бұрын
In terms of the in-house thing, I don't see it as a major plus, but I do understand what you're saying with the ETA scenario.

I'm not trying to be negative since you like this watch, but I don't see the value in this in relation to similar field watches. I've found this going for over $2,000 at gray market price, and there are a lot better values out there. At gray market prices you can get a Hamilton Khaki Field with bracelet for $380, and it has the ETA 2824-2 movement and sapphire glass. I see the Khaki King day/date with the ETA 2834-2 on a leather strap for $330. I can see paying big for a Black Bay with in-house movement, but this field watch just seems to be using the Tudor name. Sorry, just my opinion.

Right on! Only positive of this Watch vs other field watches is the bracelet! This bracelet looks very much like the Rolex Oyster bracelet!
@Spiederia
@Spiederia 8 жыл бұрын
I keep reading these comments about other watch brands offering a better "value." Regarding the Tudor, you are getting a "top grade" ETA movement VS a "standard grade" ETA in the other watches...then it is tweaked by Tudor. Even though the movements are both 2824's, the Top Grade movement is much better, and more expensive. Not to mention Tudor's watches being made in the Rolex factory. Much more to consider than trying to compare apples to oranges - more like eggs to onions. We haven't even touched on resale value; that's a whole separate discussion.
@chrislj2890
@chrislj2890 8 жыл бұрын
+Spiederia I keep seeing comments about a "top grade" or a "tweaked" ETA 2824 movements in a lot of reviews. Without any explanation that means absolutely nothing. The Tudor still only has a 38 hour power reserve and is not chronometer rated. And I should hope resale value would be higher since at retail it's $2000 more. To those who think the name is worth the price then more power to them, but I stand by my opinion that I believe this particular model doesn't justify the price. Have a nice week.

Its DIAL is undeniably A BIT LARGE considering the sparse printed text thereon. If it had to have room for military-time hour-count 13 to 24 inside the hour-markers, for example, then that would give a reason for making it a 41 mm case. As it is, the DIAL only needs to be 31 or 32 mm in diameter, but is instead 35mm, which means the entire watch OUGHT TO BE 3 or 4 mm smaller in diameter. 38.5 mm, I think, would be perfect for it.
