What a beautiful WW2 plane! My all-time favorite next to the Corsair. I remember drawing these planes on paper in grade school and let the imagination go wild...

Why does the Hurricane have different squadron identifiers on its sides? GN-F on one side and SD-A on the other?
@Avio0333 жыл бұрын
I believe they did it to commemorate a specific Hurricane that got shot down during the Battle of Britain.

Did not know there was a Hurricane at Rochester! Is it based there???
@Avio0333 жыл бұрын
No, I believe these two are stationed at Duxford. We simply just got really lucky to be at the right place at the right time as they only came in to re-fuel :)
@Avio0333 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I lied. After a bit of digging, the Spitfire and Hurricane are both stationed at RAF Conningsby. Apparently this particular Spitfire is not only the OLDEST flying Spitfire in the world, it also actually flew during the Battle of Britain AND it got shot down by a BF109. Amazing history and it still flies! Can't believe I only find out now!

Wonder just how many Spitfire and Hurricanes are flying today? I know the numbers are rising.

According to Wikipedia, Spitfires: - Airworthy: 70 - Static Display: 64 - Restoration / Stored: 60 Total: 194 On the Hurricane I can't seem to expand the list on Wikipedia, but it says there are at least 17 flying in the world. :) And yup, both are getting more restored and airworthy. Same with their German counterparts, like the Fw190's, Bf109's and even a Me262 with original Jumo engines! I'd really wish to see a flying He111 someday though. Or a Fw200 Condor. Amazing aircraft they must've been to hear and see.
@warrenchambers48193 жыл бұрын
@@Avio033 I saw a video just the other day about a FW-200 restoration but it was in German so I'm not really sure if they intended to fly it or not. I remember back in the early 90s there were less than 5 spits flying, no 109s or 190s. I did however see that spanish HE 111 the C.A.F had before smashing it up and their B-26 Marauder. Modern machining, stamping and CNC equipment make it so we see more of these aircraft flying. One of these days you will be able to just buy a program that cuts out all your parts allowing one to build just about any WWII fighter they wish.
