2 is definitely better. Technique 1 is messing up the mouths/lips somehow and the words don't seem to match up.

I’ve watched this short a lot lately. And I think it really speaks to one of the reasons Discovery never quite hit the mark for me. I think Discovery writers would have been afraid to write a scene like this because it would have been seen as too corny or the metaphor wouldn’t have fit in the grim-dark ethos of the show. It was a different time in TV, sure, but it feels like the DS9 writers were freer to experiment with things like this because they weren’t imprisoned by some need to be heavy and serious all the time.

Discovery has writing as deep as a puddle. I watched the entire run and actually thought the first two seasons were ok with some very good episodes but season 3 fell badly and season 4 was so hard to get through with only a marginally better season 5. Their focus is so strong on the visuals and the message portrayed that it falls apart. Visuals like having Linus blink almost every time he shows up on camera...it's like they are just conditioned to...oh...on screen, gotta do the blink. Or how Stamets and Culbert relationship is portrayed where so many of their scenes are them showing affection...like we don't get that they are a couple. While I'm glad it was portrayed on screen I don't need it clubbed over my head like I'm going to forget. Sure a long time ago but did they Paris and Torres do that? No, because we didn't need to be reminded time after time that yeah....they are a couple. There's a great video on YT- Difference between TNG and Star Trek Discovery / Short Trek. Granted, one might say...hey, it's a short trek but they are cannon. I mean Admiral Burnham goes off and leaves a sentient Zora to be alone for over a thousand years to make Calypso happen (A great short trek actually) which seem dubious in my ethical mind but Discovery is all about hitting you over the head and not thinking too deeply. In the end I'm glad for the few highlights and the fact that I really enjoy Strange New Worlds so far. But I don't think I'll be coming back to Discovery for a very long time.

Wow... technique 2 is the winner... moreso on Quark's closeup than Garak's

2 seems to have more contrast on the faces on side by side, and Quarks jewellery/pendant he's wearing kind of moves about a bit on technique 1. My vote is for technique 2.

2 is the winner! I love how Garak is trying to get under Quark's skin and it slides right through him. 🤣

I pray they finally get around to doing SOMETHING with making the quality better. Whether it be an upscale or proper HD remaster, whatever. I'm just sick of the barf DVD quality. It's a shame this hasn't been done already (by Paramount, I mean)...but I guess there must be no profit in it or something. As for this video, Technique 2 surely wins. I'll take it over DVD quality any day.

Gotta use the Laserdiscs if you want the best quality. The DVDs are quite visibly worse. 90s DVD sets were often poorly done, sadly.

That’s the dream… I’d love to get my hands on some digital copies out there, but the free resources to get my hands on a working laserdisc player and box sets of DS9 + Voyager… that’s the dream.

You did "Rec Details 20" @IRIS first pass and "Rec Details 20" @Proteus second pass. In my opinion a little bit to much "Recovery Details", this leads to Comic Style. Give this a try; do "Iris V2" first pass (@Rec 15-20) and second pass "Artemis Strong Hallo" without Rec, or use less invasive "Artemis HQ12" for the finisher. Artemis is often a better combination with Iris than Proteus. You also can try "Theia Fidelity" as finisher with a little bit denoise (2 to 5, gives more shiny effect).

you should have at first compared the old DVD on the left and upscaling on the right side at the same time. THATS the main point of the whole thing! the rest is then further optimization/comparison ...

That's incredible! Technique 2 is the better one. I'm curious, does it ever fall apart? What does it struggle with? I can imagine VFX would have to be redone from scratch.

Hey, ive been playing around with Topaz Labs Video Ai with some of the TNG episodes (In the old SD quality, not the HD "remaster"). Im upscaling small bits now just to see what it looks like but i cant seem to get to the same sharpness as the clip in this video? it just looks unsharp. Any tips? ive tried using the same settings as you mentioned about but it doesnt seem to help? or is my input quality maybe just not good enough?

It definitely depends a lot on the scene type and the quality of the DVD Rip/deinterlacing method, but you should be able to generate something close to what I'm producing. I'm trying to put out a more comprehensive tutorial here soon, but my best advice (unfortunately) is trial and error for your specific rip. Iris + Proteus seem to be the most usable at the moment, but in the past I was using a combo of Nyx and Artemis as separate renders, then layering them on top of each other in a video editor at 30% opacity - this can become tricky because the frame-timings don't always align exactly after upscaling with that many models and you end up getting a bit of frame ghosting. Topaz is usually great at the well-lit close-ups, but the background or out-of-focus shots do get a bit trickier to dial in.

@@SweetSweetCandyBoyz Ill be looking for that when you release it, i did do some more playing around and Iris does seem to be the best so far. Its just got a lot of noise, and when i upscale it to 4K the quallity looks more like 1080P (but i should add im watching on a 1440P monitor, but i dont think that matters) Maybe ill try to upscale from 4K to 8K... but that might give even more noise then it already has

High what software and setting do you use to rip the original episodes from the DVD's. Mine seems to be interlaced and can't figure out how to fix it. Thanks
