In this walk we will visit one of the pedestrian streets of Moscow - Kuznetsky most. The walk starts from Kamergersky lane to Bolshaya Lubyanka street.
The history of the street:
In the old days, on the left steep Bank of the Neglinka river near the Sovereign's Cannon yard was located the Smiths ' settlement - Kuznetskaya Sloboda. A bridge was built across the river, which received the appropriate name - Kuznetsky. For many years it was made of wood. More than once it was washed away by the flood, but it was restored again and again. And in the middle of the XVIII century, according to the project of the most famous Moscow architect Prince D. V. Ukhtomsky, they built a white-stone bridge, three-span, 12 m wide and 120 m long. The entrances to the bridge became Moscow street, which received the same name.
In 1817-1819, the Neglinka river was enclosed in an underground pipe. But the bridge was not demolished. Only the railings were taken apart, and the rest was covered with earth and sand. Sometimes it is dug up during construction work, as it was in 1986 and in 2003. At the same time, its fixation and architectural conservation were carried out. According to experts, the technical condition of the bridge allows its restoration and subsequent museification.
So Kuznetsky most has not gone away. It's under our feet.
Since the end of the XVIII century, Kuznetsky most has become the main shopping street in Moscow. There are many fashion stores, mostly French.
Remember Griboyedov's lines:
"And all the Kuznetsky most, and the eternal French,
From there fashion comes to us, and authors, and muses..."
If Alexander Sergeyevich Griboyedov sang the entire Kuznetsky bridge in verse, then another Alexander Sergeyevich - Pushkin - fondly remembered the restaurant that was located on this bridge.
«...Long l me in anguish hungry
The post is involuntary to observe
And cold veal
Yara truffles to remember?...»
Of course, Kuznetsky most is not only famous for its famous restaurant and trendy shops. Here was also the city estate of the" tormentor and murderer " Darya Saltykova, Saltychikha (on the site of the modern possession number 22).
Soon after the revolution, Kuznetsky most street lengthened. In its composition was included in the Kuznetsk lane. And now it starts, not as previously from Petrovka and Bolshaya Dmitrovka streets. At this point, just before Petrovka, the street widens to form a triangle. Once on this place stood a wooden house of Alexey Stepanovich Khomyakov. In the second half of the XIX century, there was a very popular hotel among the actors ' fraternity "Shcherbaki" with the restaurant of the same name. The description of this institution was left by V. A. Gilyarovsky. At the very end of the century, the house burned down. The city authorities did not give permission to build a new house. The decision was made to purchase this land for the rectification and extension of the street. The price offered to the owners was pretty low. The Saga of the purchase of land in 55.5 sq sazhen lasted about 10 years. And the site itself, on which the Hamsters arranged a lawn and planted several bushes, was called "Hamster grove".
From the loss of the Kuznetsky bridge in the twentieth century, it is necessary to recall the Annenkov mansion on the corner with Petrovka, just next to the" Hamster grove", demolished in 1946. And Solodovnikovi passage, which was destroyed in the war during one enemy air raids. In its place is now a lawn in front of the entrance to the new building of the Central Bank, built in the 2000s.
But, despite the losses, many beautiful architectural monuments have been preserved on Kuznetsky most.
Currently, the Kuznetsky bridge is part of a pedestrian tourist zone within the framework of the city's program for comprehensive development of the historical center of Moscow on the segment from Bolshaya Dmitrovka to Rozhdestvenka.
