Worked at an ISP for awhile. Can confirm that Netflix and Disney+ etc all had cache servers in our datacentres. When Disney+ launched it was a whole drama surrounding the setup etc. Not always as simple as you might expect.

Considering the wide verity of content KZbin hosts a cache box even if it was a dozen storinators fully kitted out would not be able to store even a small fraction of the content ALL of those other services have relatively static catalogs of content that change very rarely while KZbin is constantly adding new content and most views come within the first few hours of upload. A cache is not viable for KZbin

Companies like Netflix. Disney plus and such all deal purely in evergreen content. Stuff that will be watched again and again for years to come. While the majority of KZbin content is stuff thats only really relevant for the few hours in which it released.

Simply put. Netflix style caching at an ISP is not viable for KZbin. At best they could get the top 1000 channels but. Thats not going to cover even 20 percent of streams. Also. Live streams. By definition cannot be cached like that. Who the hell is watching a wan show from 10 years ago at 3 AM. Me. I am. How the fuck do they cache that wihtout being wasteful Nobody else is going to watch that shit in the next month to make it worth while.

My public library has a 3D printer and allows people to come and print whatever 3D model they want, the computers connected to it has links to 3D model sites like Thingiverse and so on. You only pay a fee for the PLA plastic you use. Kids jump on and mostly make X-Wings, Millennium Falcons and Death Stars. The printer and computers are supervised and librarians make sure kids don't fight, make rude objects or ruin the machines. Overall it's an incredibly positive experience seeing kids learn technical 3D modelling and printing, you can easily see how some get future inspiration from this

They turn down the audio quality as well. Go find a music video and toggle between 4k and 1080p, you'll probably be able to tell the difference. You'd have to be deaf to not notice at 720p. It's a strange decision because audio streams use so much less bandwidth than video streams and certainly there are people with data caps on their phones who would love to be able to turn down (or even off entirely) the video separately from the audio quality, but who still want music that doesn't sound like a jpeg artifact. I've definitely been in the experiment group Luke mentions, for the longest time my videos kept resetting to 480p even though I'm on a gigabit line that could handle anything, it was so annoying that for a long series of 10 minute "episodes" I resorted to just downloading the whole playlist and watching in VLC instead.

You really need a video card to accelerate the video. Doesn't support the codec? Get an addon to block the codecs it doesn't support. Now, here's the question they didn't really raise in the show: just how much worse 1080p quality has gotten over time. Accounting for codec, bitrate, etc. Google is actively trying to force your hand, when the current 2160p quality is what 1080p should (and largely used to) look like. And of course, not accounting for the fact of paying by being profiled, even if you're using adblock. Profiling is very hard to block completely, and it's something that benefits Google greatly, and not just for KZbin purposes. Not to mention that the content is not created by Google/KZbin. Needless to say: I will NEVER pay for premium, because I am ALREADY paying. Get me good quality 1080p, and I'll be fine. For now. Edit: Just wanted to note: I have a 30fps 1080p video (GTA 4 - Hard Charger) from 2011-03-27 (downloaded from KZbin, naturally - no transcoding), and it has a variable bitrate on the audio of ~128kbit (pretty common for the time), but the video bitrate (which my connection back then could not handle) was (again variable) a staggering 5,9Mbps to 14,5Mbps, with an average of 6Mbps. Are you going to compare that to the crappy, badly compressed VP9, WebM clips of today and tell me they're even remotely on par? If yes: Then Google should no longer be profiling me (anywhere), because my data is worth far more than that garbage, and I'll happily stop using their services, because they clearly don't value their users. So cut it out with your babbling of Floatplane bandwidth costs: You are not Google or KZbin. You are ON KZbin. Your privileged remarks are so off base it's insane at times.

I really think Linus needs to push forward the transcode testing on Intel ARC... It may not be a gaming powerhouse - but if you can show the value in AV1/H265 encode/decode then Streamers and Plex/Tdarr server owners will sell out the ARC supply. Show us they can take the place of an Elgato or RTX 30 series cards in transcode servers and they'll have a beautiful place in the market.

In my experience a team of 8-10 devs can actually get a lot done. So it's not surprising Floatplane has been able to build out such an awesome product with such a small team. You really only need thousands of devs when features are extremely complicated or you need to cater to a huge number of customers and need the most performance and uptime out of everything.

8:54 - Luke: "uBlock Origin, I think, has said they can make it work" gorhill, the dev behind uBlock Origin, has continued to be one of the most outspoken critics of Manifest v3 and challenges many of the assertions that Google makes about v3's benefits. The thing is people who already have YT premium won't be affected, so it wouldn't factor in their decision to "drop" their subscription. And I'm guessing most people complaining about the change are likely not going to pay for premium in the near future, so it doesn't matter what they do. The same goes for those dropping their subscriptions for other services. And then there's the subset of people who genuinely don't care video quality. Which, based on YT data on people not switching quality up from 480P, is the vast majority of people. Even I fall under this 80% of the time, since I mostly use YT in the background while doing something else). Meanwhile, they might be able to sway some of those that do use 4K often to get a premium subscription. They won't be a lot. But it's a bonus. I'm not gonna debate on whether Google made the right or wrong decision. But the reality of it is that they'll be saving a significant amount in recurring costs while not really losing anything.

My main issue regarding restricting 4K is when watching KZbin on a TV. It's true that most people don't need 4K when watching on a PC because most people don't have 4K displays and the screen size is small compared to a TV anyway (and even more so on phones and tablets). Having ZERO Ads is pretty darn enticing. Apparently that's not enough for most people Edit: Y'all are MISSING the point. It seems like most of you have the mentality of a child. Let me explain: Fact 1 - Online services cannot exist without revenue. Fact 2 - If everyone were using an adblocker and not paying a fee to use services, it will eventually lead to the bankruptcy of the online service. Fact 3 - Because people refuse to pay for online services, online services engage in predatory spyware to know everything about you so that they can be paid to manipulate you. Fact 4 - If everyone paid for online services, there would be no need for predatory spyware practices. Also, the community that actually utilizes the online service would have a voice, instead of the ad partners who are the real customers at the moment.

One problem with limiting 4k to premium users only is that when it comes to programming tutorials, sometimes you just HAVE to bump the res to 4k just to be able to read the text, because the creator records his screen in 4k at 100% resolution scaling. Therefore if you view the video at anything less than 4k, the small text becomes unreadable. It would be nice to know some figures around what monies channels actually get back from Premium. Do the channels just have an end payment figure or does it tell them the proportion of channel viewing time Premium viewers are responsible for etc

Unfortunately, I don't agree with them charging 4K. I can predict with KZbin letting them have an inch, they will take a mile. How long before they start charging for 1440p? 1080p? 720p? They don't have a natural competitor, and I can see them pull a Netflix here. It's definitely a slippery slope.

the cruise control thing for me is huge I was driving up from Southern California to reno Nevada in northern California and northern Nevada the speed limits in alot of areas are half of what they are in southern california i was going with the flow of traffic and got pulled over going 40 in a 25 in a small town not a school zone for the rest of my trip I found trying to drive at a constant of 25mph was so awkward and wished cruise control could be set that low

There is a bad township with crap cops that go after anything. There’s a community park where the speed limit drops from 40 to 25 and I’m able to set my cruise to 27 which is close enough. Some times dropping down that slow feels like you’re stopping and naturally start to speed back up sometimes without realizing it.

The thing where KZbin was purposely changing the resolution super low happened to me too. There was a period of time not that long ago I remember getting annoyed because it kept going to 1080p or lower and I could notice it right away. The thing that bothers me the most is that KZbin 1080p looks bad and KZbin 4k looks like Vimeo 1080p. I wouldn't care if 4k is behind a paywall if the 1080p looked more like actual 1080p.

I haven't lived in a place with internet service fast enough to stream 1080p video in over 8 years. Last night even 144p kept pausing to buffer, though 720p usually streams okay with minimal buffering. It took me a while to notice that KZbin kept turning the quality down, because I rely on it automatically reducing the quality when my internet service is struggling.

What a lot of people don't seem to know is that their ISP isn't in charge of all the fiber lines that are used. They're usually "last mile" ISP's. They're the "level 3" that delivers the last mile to you, but there are 2 other levels of connection for the delivery. The main company I know of because I worked with them at my previous job was Masergy. When Masergy has an outage, it usually impacted much larger areas than if Crime Warner Cable had an outage. So when my buildings networks would go down, we'd first check the Last mile ISP, then check our bundle with Masergy. and I've had KZbin Premium since it was added to google play music, and it costs me 10$ because i've never canceled it. I'm left handed and use my phone in my right hand 99% of the time. VR needs to improve control options. We need the gloves, etc. That'd be an amazing improvement. (I know there are ways to do it, but it's either jank, or expensive.)

We just came from h264 where 1080p streams cost literally more storage & bandwith than 4k does today-- VP1 & h265 shouldn't be ignored in this, and it's shameful to suddenly paywall a resolution most consumers have gotten affordable displays for by now! If they do it for 8k and up I'm not complaining.

This is not right, at least not currently. Not sure back then, but right now 1080p H264 (AVC) vs 4K with VP9 is like 3 to 5X more bandwidth needed, so a pretty big jump. VP9 is not a miracle that can make 4K use the same bandwidth as 1080P. It would be around 40% to 50% saving moving from AVC to VP9 and probably around 5% to 10% more saving from VP9 to AV1 (these number will vary greatly depending on the content and resolution). So you save like 50%, but 4K has 4X more pixel, so no, 1080P AVC is not using more bandwidth vs 4K, not even close. And there is another fact that I think most people doesn't know about 4K YT vs 1080p YT. YT actually throwing more bitrate per pixel on 4K vs 1080p on the same codec. In one video, 4K video can use close to 7X more bitrate vs 1080p! Should they use that high of a bitrate on 4K? I personally think not, but then hear people and content creator saying something like "you might not see it because of YT compression" and there are people thinking 4K doesn't really use more bandwidth. My stance is similar to Linus. I don't like something that is free being taken away, but I understand why they do it if they ended up doing it. Some people choose to turn a blind eye on this and simply want everything for free. No ads, max resolution, max quality, for free and they think they are entitled to it.

@@interlace84 this. Everyone complains that 265 uses the client more and thus makes it harder to use. However we have MASSIVE CPUs for software, and embedded chips for h264 that the CPU completely offloads to. We seriously need to get away from 264.

As someone who manages content creation and streaming for organizations, putting 4k behind a paywall may make business and technical sense, but it is really only going to lead to one thing: No content creator or production will find it worth the investment to attempt to increase their production to 4k quality, and thus the platform will stagnate in 1080p for many years past when it becomes business and technically sensible for it to be standard.

@TheGhastHunter2014 Жыл бұрын
@@tams805 Absolutely, so short term, it makes plenty of sense, but I am referring to the long term growth of 4k technology, and the inevitable future of 4k being standard resolution. This will likely not happen for 5-10 years market-wide, but if youtube locks 4k behind a paywall, it will slow this transition significantly, at least for youtube and youtube creators.

It's an experiment to see how many more Premium subscriptions they could get that way, but it would hardly save them any bandwidth. As mentioned KZbin already serves lower resolutions to test if you actually care and most people just don't.
