I have an 02 sierra denali with the 6.0 and awd and I've been told by everyone that only the 4l65 from factory would work with the transfer case but im glad to stumble across this video

Tech tip phantom when you're taking out the bell housing bolts take the transmission cross member off and tilt the transmission down to get easy access to the top bolts.

good tip! once the trans is out, roll the pinch weld at the trans tunnel to give easier access to the trans to engine bolts.

I have a 2003 Chevy SS and ABSOLUTELY Love mine. It has original 36k miles on the truck, when it was bought new, it had a Blueprinted C5R - 427 swapped out on it. I just took off the Brand New 24” wheels and tires that previous original owner had put on, and put on Brand New 20” Weld Gauntlet wheels and did a 1-2 drop on it. Truck is ABSOLUTELY SICK… Love yours

snap on makes some nice transmission snap ring pliers that work good on them snap rings in the t case. SRP2B is the part number.

The torque converter bolts are a 15mm. Semi-deep on a ball socket works like a champ! Removing the starter gives you a better angle to them bolts.

"Horseshoe Washer Pliers" is what you need for those PITA C-clips. A variety of them is critical for working on transmissions and transfer cases...

For rounded off bolts you can get bolt extractors that will dig into the head as you loosen it.

Torch and or induction heater plus candle wax helps loosen it up and on the neutral safety switch heat the outside with a mini torch they come right apart.

Thanks Phantom for this most excellent and informative video, it will be invaluable help to those who may be considering the same trans upgrade for themselves. Now,, as you discussed those electrical wires at the trans and you mentioned there's an EZ to swap made up set for $300 (@21:32) out there OR you can drop $6 for the pigtail and DIY it flashed through my mind I wonder how many guys hiring a local shop doing the swap for them were quoted the $300 [plus markup!] then they did the $6 route there by pocketing approximately $375 FREE and EZ CASH? You and we know there are that kind of crook out there don't we. No,, I'm a retired concrete construction guy and have been stroked by the best 'cause I did not like to take on jobs like this back in the day. You're miles more advanced in the world of automotive skills and even you were caught with unseen surprises and had to wait for another days for parts. I just did not have that kind of patience NOR the expertise so bit the bullet hired the work done. Just a thought.

for 4x4 80e swaps, there are gm $100 32 spline input shafts for use on 4x4 transfer cases.

Stupid question- I have an 04 SSS and looking to do the same swap. Why not use the 2008 up awd transfer case from a 6l80e? The spline count is the same and it should slip right on. I just haven't found a transfer case yet to try it with. Love the videos!!

They actually come stock with the 4L65e rpo code M32. Thats the heavy duty with 5 planetaries. So do the VHO trucks and the 05-07 VortecMAX TRUCKS! Very beautiful truck by the way

Best thing to do with manifold bolts is to make a WOT blast then hurry up and bust them loose, drink a beer or 4 then you wont get burnt up by hot exhaust pipes lol

I’m a Gm diesel and transmission mechanic in Florida thank god don’t deal with a lot of rust. But I use the GM rust penetrant and inhibitor. PN/ 88862628 it works very well I do not break or strip any exhaust bolts or nuts been using it for years. May want to give it a shot. But love the channel recently found it so been watching the older stuff.
