4Music Launch - 15th August 2008

How it all began, the launch of 4Music, which replaced The Hits. This includes the full 10 minute countdown, along with some promos and the first show presented by Davina McCall & Steve Jones as they countdown their 20 favourite hits. The first music video shown was The Pretender by Foo Fighters.

When 4Music launched, it was co-owned by Box TV Limited (Bauer AG) and Channel 4 and it was based at Mappin House, Whitfield Street, London. On 30th June this year, Channel 4 is closing down 4Music alongside all the other former Box Plus Network linear music channels. E4 Extra is still going.

@@HalfbrickVHS C4 are in trouble and a smart move they made was to pull the plug on The Box, Magic TV, Kerrang! TV, Kiss TV and 4Music. E4 Extra was launched follwing the poaching of archived C4 programming from 4Music which meant that 4Music became purely a music channel after moving to Box Hits' former EPG slot. What caused it to go even further down the drain was that Channel 4 acquired Bauer's stake in 'Box Plus Network' then dropped the name in 2019 and closed its offices at Mappin House, Whitfield Street, London and moved its staff to Horseferry Road and some to Leeds but others were made redundant. Channel 4 took the BBC's route by making cuts by pulling the plug on its 'linear music channels' sector and closing down underperforming channels that have declined ratings-wise. 4Music tried to replicate the formula by the now-defunct Play UK by having music videos in the daytime and its evening output consists of programmes, mostly comedies and panel shows. Its removal from Freeview was a huge blow to 4Music, it was reduced to both satellite and cable with the same Top 20s and Top 10s lists being repeated on a loop at Ericsson Red Bee. I now collect music DVDs released by various record companies to support the artists and I do not watch linear music channels. MTV is now a cesspool of reality programmes and you can blame Paramount for that.

I did yes, but the Telewest box messed up a bit during recording, so the picture freezes every few seconds though the sound plays fine.
