Cool idea. My Subaru and my Rodeo have front and rear 12v. I'll have to locate these relays. Even more power options in addition to the solar generators 😁

One thing I noticed is that my 4th Gen 12v outlet has way too much voltage drop over the cables because they used 16 or 18 gauge wires to the back of the 4runner. They may have made it better for the 5th gen but I had to run my own 8 gauge wires from the battery and install a second 12v socket and Anderson power connectors to avoid low voltage shutoff on my fridge. Crappy design on Toyotas part. My 12v fridges wouldn't start up without the engine running because the voltage was too low. Not the fridges fault but the crap junk wires they put into the outlet design.

@@Jasonoid ahhh got it. Makes sense. I'll have to think this through some more. Trying to avoid buying a portable solar generator and didn't want to wire directly from the battery. Might have to now. Thanks
@Jasonoid3 жыл бұрын
@@kiver50 wiring directly from the battery to a back panel isn't bad at all. I did it on my 4th Gen and it took a couple hours max. Went easily through the firewall and the wires tuck under the door jamb plastic running boards. If you has multiple connections you could use a solar charge controller for charging and another port to run your fridge.

@@Jasonoid I’ll give it a look. I’m not the greatest diy guy so have to see how involved this will be. Especially with electrical. I do like the idea though. So an 8 gauge wire should work?
@Jasonoid3 жыл бұрын
@@kiver50 8 gauge wire would allow for 40 amps charging or discharging. It would also remove most voltage drop over the distance from the battery to the back back of the 4runner. I think I needed about 22 feet in mine.

Great video, what battery are you running? And how long would you feel comfortable running your fridge with the car off? Also More 4runner content! Not enough 4th gen tips and tricks on YT
@Jasonoid2 жыл бұрын
I think it's okay to run a fridge for 6 hours or so, maybe a little longer depending on ambient temps and how large your battery is. I use mostly my DIY 100ah lifepo4 battery, I also use some power stations on my shorter trips. I have tons of videos about that stuff on my channel. I have put in a power panel in the back of my 4runner with Anderson Powerpole and a secondary 12v plug, I'll do a video on that soon.

In this video I showed my DIY power panel I built for running my fridges and charging my power stations / batteries while driving: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4usc6B8d991fdU The stock wiring is too low in a 4th gen so I had to wire directly to the back anyways. It might be better in the 5th gen, but I'd still recommend running power from the starter battery to the back, it's pretty easy.

How does this work regarding not killing your battery by always running electronics even when engine is killed?
@Jasonoid2 жыл бұрын
Just be smart and don't run your battery down. It's okay to run a device after the engine shuts off but it's your responsibility to watch the voltage if you make the mod. You can watch the voltage of your battery with a voltmeter and make sure it doesn't drop below 11.9v-12v. That's usually enough juice left to start the truck back up again.

Can you keep the ac 120v on? Don’t want to drain the battery
@Jasonoid2 жыл бұрын
My 4runner doesn't have the AC inverter. You wouldn't want to keep it running all the time due to the power draw it uses while idle. Only use the inverter while the engine is running.

What do you mean you only get an amp without the car running? Can you go into more depth?
@BigglesworthNWATT6 ай бұрын
@@Jasonoid plugging in a power bank it will display however many Watts are being drawn. While the car is off it will show about 12Watts (1amp) until I turn the car on at which point it will jump to 90W. @@BigglesworthNWATT the stock wiring is small and is causing voltage drop. I had to run a new set of wires to the back of my 4runner to run a 11v fridge successfully when the key was turned off.

if u did this mod and then plugged in a power in inverter into the back 12v socket would it still run down the battery if u didn't have anything plugged into the inverter? (i.e. a fridge or cell phone charger)

The invert does use a little bit of powe (parasitic drain), so over time yes it would kill the battery.
