Ben giving them something to work on is a sign that he likes them. If you compare his critique with them and some other groups (not all, there were a few who had high level technical skills), you can tell he was impressed with them. He gave them actual constructive tips and critique while most others were the gentler critique you give good amateurs. Instead of "work on not falling too far off key" it was "in this specific section a half beat would build suspense". Him giving specific technical thoughts IS praise. If they weren't that high level, they would not get those. The fact that he gives those small notes is a sign that he saw them as professional enough to be able to understand and implement it.

I feel you about Ben Folds. The fact is he's one of the best musicians out there. As a coach, the more critical he becomes when the group is this good. They set the bar high and he wants to push them. By the end of the show he has nothing bad to say.

Ben is helping them by giving them tips on how to improve and if you continue watching( which you should!) you can see them apply those tips VERY spectacularly in the 7th and 12th performance. They grow every week, and part of that is from listening to those critiques.

Actually, I believe these sound advises helped smoothing the rough edges. I do not know if you have noticed how they applied each comment right at the next arrangement. For instance, they usually begin arrange pretty close to the original song before working their magic. It comes from this early stage.

I have to defend Ben Folds a little here. Yes, as fans of PTX we don't want to hear any negativity. But as judges it's their job to give the groups something to work on to make them improve. All the judges LOVED PTX and knew from the start that they were going to win.

It’s a good thing that he’s giving constructive criticism. It’s how they got better and you can see how fantastic they already were. Imagine if they hadn’t grown and learned over the years. It really is a good thing. Please, please watch all of the episodes you will be even more amazed by then than you were. Also you have the original Mitch slap coming and you can’t miss that. And Avi crying, which is a little bittersweet now, but so moving to see. Don’t give up now.

This for me was their defining performance. The one that marked their excellence and made me think they couldn't lose. Also Sean's comments were foretelling because I truly believe Pentatonix has done a lot to promote and develop a capella for the future with Scott producing Acapop Kids and Avi and Ben Bram with the A Capella Academy. Pentatonix is more than just a music group they are pioneering the new wave of a capella.

D, Ben is simply doing his job. He notices the tiny details that you or I didn't notice. Remember, he's a Judge, not an audience member. That means he brings his vast knowledge of music to the table. He's sharing his experience and helping them learn how to be who they became. If you look at Superfruit videos, even Scott and Mitch themselves can laugh at how they produced songs when they were younger. Today, you've got a masterpiece like "The Prayer" and that was only possible by learning what to do and what not to do and by listening to teachers and judges and by experimenting and learning. They weren't born with this knowledge. They were born with the POTENTIAL. All Ben is doing is helping them live up to their potential. And you know what? They totally did. They worked 60 hour weeks during the Sing Off and they got a LOT of advice during that time, not just the clips you see here. A lot of behind the scenes teaching and coaching went on during this show. This was their Genesis moment and everyone that was in the Sing Off helped them learn and grow.

It’s hard to criticize a band so talented like Pentatonix. However, Ben Folds’s constructive criticism really helped this inexperienced group get better. There is one Pentatonix performance at the end of the season, Without You, that they really messed up. It turned out that their ear pieces malfunctioned so they couldn’t keep in tune with each other. Fortunately, the judging phase was over. There is a video of them singing Without You afterwards in a parking garage proving they could do it. Recommend their original, Happy Now.

This is the problem with most reactors who have watched other PTX videos before the sing off. They have become so biased and protective, they do not realize when constructive criticism helped to push them to be the polished group they are today. Ben Folds is a much respected individual in the field of music. And in reality, at no point did he bash them, but his little critiques were one of the things that Scott said he respected during that time.

I understand that you love PTX and it's difficult to hear anyone say anything but "that was perfect" about a song by them but you have to remember that there is a difference between negativity and constructive criticism. we wouldn't have the PTX we have today if they'd never received the constructive criticism they did from the judges, specifically the feedback from Ben Folds. in fact, after the comment he made in the last video about them needing to slow down on the "come on"s, they began rehearsing with a metronome. they take all constructive criticism to heart and it's what makes them the dynamic powerhouse acapella group that we all know and love. ❤️

The 12th performance is the last to be judged. The 13th & 14th performances by the top 3 groups were on the following week's show, just to entertain the audience & give the top 3 more chances to show their stuff before the announcement of who won. Then I guess technically they each had a shorter 15th song, as the 3rd & 2nd place sang on their way out followed by the winning group doing their "victory" song. PTX's 13th song didn't go well because they were 1st to perform that night. The show had moved to a different auditorium & in the process whoever set up the mics & other equipment didn't do something right with the mic settings. They all were a little hard to hear & it was harder to hear Kirstie than the others. PTX's earpieces apparently also didn't get charged cause they didn't work. It took a few lines for them all to figure out they weren't the only one having trouble hearing the others to match timing & pitch. Once they did they just listened to what they could hear around the earpieces & trusted themselves to do it right without echo & crowd noise suppression. Then it got better, but still wasn't great because of the mic issue. The show did quickly get things fixed as soon as they finished, & the rest of the night went smooth for all performances.

Ben Folds is an American singer-songwriter, musician, composer and record producer. Folds was the frontman and pianist of the alternative rock band Ben Folds Five from 1993 to 2000 (yes that is word for word from his Wikipedia page). That being said, I too get annoyed by him knowing how far PTX has come, however if you asked them if they had to pick one judge they learned the most from I am sure they would say him. You have to be careful with a young evolving group to not shower them with nothing but positive critique they are in danger of inflated ego and then they would get careless. He is annoying at times, but please bare with him because their performances only get better! My favorites are weeks 6,10, and of course 12!

The thing is, his criticisms weren't just because. They were valid thoughts. When they performed those songs on tour later they did take those things in to consideration and it sounded better. And you can tell as the show goes on and in their career since that they are very particular with tempo and using pauses. Some of their best work has been around using those skills. Them getting told to work on those things (the trio was synced with each other but not with Kevin and Avi at the start. For obvious reasons) was important for them to grow in to what they are now. They were good at the start, don't get me wrong. But the combination of them getting used to relying on each other in the group, and knowing how to arrange things to the best effect, is what made them the professionals they are today.

Nothing wrong with constructive criticism. However.....and I have had people disagree with me on this, Scott going off time just a bit, was an artistic choice, not a mistake. I have watched them do this song on a few different occasions, and he always does it the same. Some people say a mistake is a mistake, intentional or not. Nope! It was an intentional artistic choice. That being said, Ben actually did/does love them.

i didn't see this when it originally aired but you could tell by this performance that they were going to win and were so much better than anyone else in the competition. so maybe ben folds just had to make it look fair but i wondered why he was a judge to start with his band only had like 2 hits in his career how does that make him a good judge? and he always says something cringey. Now having said that if you go back and listen after you hear his constructive criticism you will see he was right most of the time. but its possible this is why ptx is ptx and not baby ptx bcz as good as they were then they would have been not on the show without kevin and avi.

Please keep going and please don't let Ben's advice keep you from enjoying the series. Seriously, I don't know why you've got such a distaste for him. Remember, this is all 11 years in the past, when they were young and inexperienced. They killed it, that's for sure. But Ben's ears are sensitive and he pointed out some minor flaws that you and I missed (I have no idea what he heard, but I defer to his experience). PTX however, as students, will learn from his advice and keep improving and improving. You can't improve if nobody tells you what you need to improve upon. Also, it's a show. Keep that in mind. There has to be some elements of drama and intrigue and the unknown. Will they make it? Will Ben like this one? STAY TUNED!!!!!! Spoiler Alert, when they win, Ben has the BIGGEST grin on his face along with all of the other Judges. He's so proud of them.
