I have a 76. It's overrated, under powered, overpriced, doesn't tow well with solid axles, ancient, not a good daily, under equipped and a one trick pony, but I love it.

@@btron1234 the towing part is more related to the way it sits on the road with solid axles. It tends to wonder and need constant correction. My wife's Ranger does a much better job, although down on power, it's far more comfortable. I must clarify that the 76 is running a 4" lift with 35's. hehe.

@@craigice9635 oh haha, yeah the 4 inch lift and 35"s are your problem. mate of mine has the same and it handles like shit. im 2 inch on 33's and it tows brilliantly. Just did 16k k's up north including the tanami and gibb river rd and it performed flawlessly

What are they about though? They're not built for tough tracks. So is it just a tourer? If so there's plenty of vehicles that do that better. What is it they do better than other cars in a similar price point? Or lower for that matter

These vehicles aren’t for the person seeking ultimate comfort & value for money as it’s well known & publicised that you need to throw quite a bit of money at them to get them up to standard. This is why a lot of people with money to spend like them, they’re a blank canvas. Like I said… they’re a enthusiast vehicle. You get what these vehicles are about or you don’t. You obviously don’t.

My brother retired his v8 79 and bought a v6 amarok for towing large loads because he thought the power and auto in the amarok was great. After not even 6 months he has traded it in and bought another cruiser because the amarok engine overheats, can’t reverse up hills with a loaded trailer as the torque converter can’t handle it. Basically it took him that to realise how good and reliable the cruiser actually is

In 2022, I have a 25 year old, 100 series with 200k as the 3rd owner for 7 years, the past owners went on to buy newer Cruisers. Uber luxury, super smooth 4.2tdi & still a dream to drive, unlike the other 2 off roaders. Which I tested & drove. Yes, in-between I've tried to do better, but it all failed. The 6.0 Flying Spur, the 3.0 tdi Phaeton, Merc GLK 2.0 TDI, equal luxury to the old bus, but electric modern headaches & super expensive parts in the end. Friends have the 2020 Range Rovers new ones, every 6 months, they spend more time in the repair garages thus making them, OFF THE ROAD. Only the Kia Sorento 2.2 td was near to the old bus, excellent 38mpg, but failed in comfy seats. My grand total in up keep in 7 years, including services & ABS pump only after 25 years, has been £4500 in 60k. Also Bio fuel at £1 compare to £1.70 A Dam bargain. LONG LIVE the KING. Cruisers.

Chalk and cheese, your talking about two differant cars, and that's what you people do to justify your weak argument. One would expect and new cruiser to be good it has all the latest tech, but are they a good off road vehicle? No, they are a good limited off road vehicle, leaf sprung, only 100mm drop in rear, terrible articulation, drinks like a fish, narrower rear diff then front, tech heavy, are they a good CAR, yes, are they over rated on and off road, , yes!

@@grantwatts681 Every off & on roader I've had a conversation with would tell me, that they would do some sort of change to the jeep they have. From Suzuki to Landcruiser there is always room for a tweak, here & there. Range Rover to Land Rover, you have to strip to build a different off roader, which ends up being a specialist machine.

pay slightly extra for literally any yank tank brand new and you have ALL the creature comforts, way more than even a 200 or 300 series (yank tank is the same price) plus everything is 4 times stronger. 70 series is by far THE most over rated bucket of snot on the aussie market. if they were quite literally half the price they would be awsome.

I’ve got a 79 on order, I’m well aware of its simplicity.. but that’s why I like it. It’s tried and tested and will last 10+ years easily.. where “most” people who buy run of the mill Utes will be trading them in after 5 years as they get a bit haggard. Same power and torque as most but has full torque at only 1200rpm and that’s why it feels like it pulls better. The reason I’m buying one is I want a Ute that will last me 10yrs and touring Aus full time. I priced up the Dmax and Ranger (top specs) and to then add on the tray (for my canopy) and accessories it worked out the same or if not close to a 79 anyway.. The biggest issue I feel in Australia is that people care too much about what the other one drives.. who cares as long as your out and having fun.

The v8 doesn't use much more fuel when loaded and towing. I know in a Ronny Dahl vid a 200 series v8 went from being the least economical vehicle in a convoy towing trailers to being, by a large amount, the most efficient after they hit soft sand dunes and the beach. The v8 may have similar hp and torque figures to the new, modern inline 4 turbo diesels but it loves work and gets better the more you ask of it. It's understrung, takes 10L of oil puts up with long services, different oils, a bit of water in the fuel won't blow it up etc. These run in 3rd world countries with minimal servicing for 30 years and hundreds of thousands of km, barely seeing a mechanic

Unsure if you've ever owned the 4.5 5 speed manual 76, but they're not frugal on fuel. Drive it at 80klms an hour and its as economical as anyone else in convoy, go to 100klms an hour and your using heaps more fuel, go to 110 freeway and it's revving its head off drinking diesel. Toyota upped 5th gear to address this issue, so can't comment on newer versions. Now put a van behind it and it became the most uneconomical vehicle I've ever towed with, yet, it had the most berries of all and didn't need to be driven unlike our 4 cylinder wagons that are driven to tow but are more frugal. Economical towing, RUBBISH, we match litre for litre to our travelling partner whom tows his 6 mt van with the Sahara 200 compared to our 4 cylinder Patrol towing our 6 mt van. Unsure how anyone can derive economical for a 76, but a 200 going lt to lt with our Y61, that's more economical than a 76, but in reality, lugging so much easier, should be more economical than a 4 cylinder working. Fuel prices up, watch the resale value of these plummet.

@@ianweal3081 me and my father have a 2012 troop carrier and 2014 79 dual cab between us. Sticking to 100km/h on the highway (not towing) gives 11.5L / 100km. Towing is amazing, we put a car on a car trailer behind us and load it up with some bits and pieces and ee get 14 to 16L per 100km. Every engine has its sweet spot and maybe your big van is not in the v8's ideal range with its weight and aero. I'm also curious if your 76 is stock including wheel sizes. I can only report what I've experienced and seen, where the v8 tows like a dream and is quite efficient.

@@tosgem God, I wish, never got such consumption, I'd be lucky to get 14 vehicle alone, if driving rapidly 17, in excess of 22 towing and even worse at times, but old PC died, so all records lost.

That's quite untrue. The v8 is extremely thirsty for a diesel. Plenty of test have been conducted between the y62 and the 200, and the petrol y62 used less fuel in every test.

Great video! I flicked my Merc x250d and bought a 2018 76 series workmate. Absolutely no tech but a whole lot of country cred. The sand the mud the dog, I don't have to worry anymore. Stress free travelling with all that beautiful torque.

As an owner of a 2015 LC76 & an MT-1, I couldn't be happier. Haters gonna hate... Each to their own. LC 70's are built for a purpose & they serve that purpose well. Sure a Dmax or Triton will be more comfortable & probably makes the same amount of power, but will it do it for as long and reliably while being mistreated on a mining site or farm? Probably not. Those dual cab utes are nearly half the price because you'll end up buying twice as many over the same life span & still be nervous about doing the Canning Stock Route in them or crossing the Simpson Desert & back.

Embrace it for what it is. A dedicated reliable off-roader with amazing 4x4 capabilities. - No, it’s not as soft as a soft modern vehicle with all its driver assisting features - but it’s still a heck of a vehicle despite the price. That’s why I bought a 2022 Jimny. Because it ticked most of my boxes, size limitations included.

An amazing 4x4, well you have not done much, let me guess Frazer or some dirt road, these thing are reliable yes sure as they should be, there a new 4x4, but good off road, I think not, leaf sprung only 100mm drop in the rear springs before your off the ground, terrible articulation, rear diff narrower then the front, drinks like a fish, all they really have is people think because I bought one, there the best.

I had an interesting conversation with a Landcruiser owner (ute), there was a Defender onsite he told me alot of crap about his Cruiser, told me his he needed his cruiser because of the payload ( 1080kg ), I said leaf sprung, not good off road or articulation, he said coil could not handle the weight he puts in his cruiser, I said Defender 130 has a load rating of 1650kg and it's coil, what about a uni-mog there coil, he walked, cruiser are not the best because you bought one.

They definitely don't have amazing 4wd capabilities. The rear leaf spring hangers are a major problem. The thing gets caught up on everything as they hang so slow and drag. Go watch the latest 4wd action with shaunos last 80 trip and what mits 79 series each shit and every obstacle. 76 is the same.

They aren’t sports utes? Just because it isn’t a slow bucket of shit like cruisers doesn’t mean it’s some fancy sporty Ute, DMAX, Tritons, Rangers etc are just normal good 4x4s, a sports ute would be a falcon or commodore ute. 79,75 and 70 series aren’t that great everyone tries to justify them for their price when really they’re just a 40k ute but slower then anything modern and are more designed for simplicity and nothing more . If you want a capable ute anything modern will be your best bet especially with modern tech an Auto 4wd is far superior then a 70 series manual, say otherwise your pulling ya leg.

I am driving my second 79 single cab V8. I had 79 single cab's before the V8, so I consider myself a loyal Cruiser owner. I also have 2 1982 HJ 45 Diesels in good condition and they get used on the Farm in South Africa daily. Both my V8 have gearbox problems. My current 79 V8, are with the Dealer for 4 Months now, trying to sort out the gearbox and they also gave me the news that the turbo is a gonner. I love my Cruisers, but saying that, I also know that Toyota is betting on our loyalty, so we basically buy a little more than half a vehicle at a very high price and then you have to add a lot of extras, mostly imported from Australia, to make it a vehicle suited for the job in South Africa. Do I still stick with my Cruisers after all the hassles and Toyota's arrogance? Yes, but I will most certainly be a much happier Cruiser owner, without Toyota SA'S poor customer service.

You can't compare a 76 to a current dual cab ute. With TLC, in 30 years time the 76 will still be going. Any dual cab ute will be well and truly in the scrap heap. I'm kicking about in my 1994 80 series and its still going strong.

Actually if you travel around the developing world you will see all varieties of Japanese off roaders that are 30+ years old and still running. Many of them are dual cab Utes.

I used to own Toyota Troopy for 5 years, i bought it new 2015 with 6 cylinders diesel, you need to spend thousands of $ to make it a little bit comfortable, it look cool after you add accessories like bull bar and others, it was under power, noisy but tough as a rock and easy to modify you can remove the roof ad tent or kitchen there is no limit, i liked it very much specially the field of view you can see everything out side the car, i now own Toyota Fortuner, very comfortable very capable car, so if you do not do a very tough or hard terrain trips you do not need such a car, in the past 5 years i did only 2 very tough road trips, and i think i could have mange with the Fortuner.

I really really want to like the 76 because of the reasons many do like them - simple, rugged and the sound. But the most pertinent argument noted is not much has changed in them from an engineering standpoint for 30+yrs - to be asking drug money for them alongside of and equal to a 200 series Toyota are undoubtedly taking the piss and laughing all the way to the shareholders conferences.

Toyota could sell it at 50k and it would still not be attractive to the vast majority because its super outdated. So why not charge more because the people who would pay 50k for this probably would pay the extra 20k anyways.

Rear track correction helps massively in sand and towing.. also you may notice without the track correction if you overtake on the highway with a decent camber, as the vehicle crosses the camber at speed it can be a little scetchy..

1. Some people don't want all that extra scrap that they chuck on modern cars that goes wrong and is annoying. Some people would rather have a 60s mustang over a 2020 mustang, it's the same principle. 2. I'm 6'9 and I fit in mine better than all work cars I have access to (2021 hilux, ranger, dmax). 3. The engine is tuned to be super reliable. You want power, tune it for that and it'll still be more reliable than the rest of the industry

Brand new, up to like 90k. A tune (gutless), clutch (shit weak stock clutch), properly designed rear diff with coils, (spring hangers absolutely ruin rear clearance), 35k. A bunch of mods to make the interior actually nice (arm rests, decent cupholders, headunit, etc. alongside all your normal vehicle mods, could be anywhere from $100 to 10k. You'll pay over 100k to get a decent vehicle, and yes, at that point it is a nice rig. OR you can buy a 2022 Dmax, with all that and more, for a third of the price, SAS it and end up with a more capable rig for less. I work at ARB as an accessory fitter, and all 3 senior fitters/mechanics/auto sparkies all aghree that the 79/76 is a shit box on wheels, way overpriced. Maybe if it wasn't priced at 90k, maybe instead if it were priced at 40k it would be worth it but as it sits now, not a chance.

90k is 20k more than people pay now, go back a few and they were 10k under this. I actually do agree about spring hangers but it isn't a deal breaker, couldn't care about interior as my gxl has arm rests, you talking about povo workmate or something? Clutch is fine if you don't drive like a retard or tune it for power you don't actually need(its not a drag car ffs...) I cant see a dmax lasting or surviving anywhere near as long, they need far higher rpms to perform, not going to go the distance. How many of these workers have actually owned a 70 for a long time? A SAS on a DMAX is going to cost what properly engineered? I like my vehicles legal and insurable, far easier buying one that leaves factory with a solid front.

I’m in the mining industry and it is the only thing that can handle the environment. I have one personally not fancy no bells n whistles but I know I can go out 4wding give it a hard time and still drive home. crazy prices now especially with the Covid tax

Yeah I always find it strange that you didn't get the GRJ petrol version... no worries about emissions then! But considering how cheap your USDM trucks are over there... and how low the sales of the 200 Series were when it was available, I don't think the 70 Series would be all that popular... considering an SR5 4Runner is about 40K USD it would mean the 76 would be about 60K USD and you'd get less equipment! When we're out around a campfire we also bring up that we wish we got the 4Runner over here (we did a couple generations ago...) that with the diesel out of the HiLux would've been a hit over here I reckon! anyway, thanks for watching anyway and offering another perspective... Sweet video guys. If it's of any use, I've got a 2012 76 relatively stock (2inch lift on 33" ATZ) it drove like absoutle puss on sand. Offset rims (although maybe frowned upon) fixed the problem. Even noticed a difference on the highway

The 70 series LCs are like the Nokia 3310 mobile phones. Simple, tough and reliable. But the former is ridiculously expensive compared to modern day off roaders, and the latter is much much cheaper than a modern smartphone. This is why Toyota is really taking the p-ss out of the general public with their pricing.

I can sort of see it being a little bit more expensive than comparable vehicles due to it being sold it a small market and costing a bit to develop. but 20-30k more than a comparable dual cab is way to expensive. @Logical Perspective Actually they are not all made in Japan. They have a factory in Europe, and i believe there is one in Latin America also. They are not selling the foreign made ones for much less than the Japanese ones. They also break down in the bush like all other vehicles.

Just today I’ve ordered a new 79 GXL duel cab with a few bits, bull bar,heavy duty painted tray,tow bar,scrub bars and side steps drive away $93000 I’m prepared to wait the 2 years it might take as my hilux will be ready to change over then huge savings if you aren’t in a hurry

Mitch obviously does not get the LC70 series. Very surprised considering he likes old school 4WDs. You don't buy this vehicle and expect modern conveniences and/or luxury appointments. You buy the 70 series for it's ruggedness, dependability, off-road ability, and reliability (& some might even buy it for it's old school cool looks). Giving the owner peace of mind that wherever you take it, it will be able to take you back home. If you want comfort, gadgets & mod-cons, that's what the LC200 is for. In the used car market, they (76 & 200) play in the same price bracket (almost), and if it's the latter what you're after, get the LC200. I would, and it (LC200) comes with an automatic. You definitely do not buy an LC70 series for value. If you want value look elsewhere. But if you want a tough, durable, rugged 4WD (and one that has solid front axle), with a wide support network, it's worth seriously considering.

I think that on there own they are a great 4x4. I think if you have the money to spend on it you can make them even better. But one thing that I don’t get is the price. I feel like your paying for the badge not the car. I believe that they are way over priced for what they are but I really do believe that they are a great car. In 2022, I have a 25 year old, 100 series with 200k as the 3rd owner for 7 years, the past owners went on to buy newer Cruisers. Uber luxury, super smooth 4.2tdi & still a dream to drive, unlike the other 2 off roaders. Which I tested & drove. Yes, in-between I've tried to do better, but it all failed. The 6.0 Flying Spur, the 3.0 tdi Phaeton, Merc GLK 2.0 TDI, equal luxury to the old bus, but electric modern headaches & super expensive parts in the end. Friends have the 2020 Range Rovers new ones, every 6 months, they spend more time in the repair garages thus making them, OFF THE ROAD. Only the Kia Sorento 2.2 td was near to the old bus, excellent 38mpg, but failed in comfy seats. You know the old saying: “You either own a LandCruiser or you wish you could afford one”. Most people won’t be buying these for technology, creature comforts or great handling. They buy them for the extreme long term reliability and simple engineering that just works on & off road without all the extra bells and whistles that cause most of the problems in today’s vehicles. With simple regular maintenance it will keep on trucking and you’ll be getting most of your money back in 2-3 decades time on resale. PS: I’d absolutely love the opportunity to buy a brand new Cruiser in Australia with the 1HZ engine as currently available in 3rd world countries around the world. Even less electronics and things to go wrong. That engine will outlast humanity itself.

Bottom line is, you're paying $80k+ for a car that, if it were made by another manufacturer it would be $40-50k and they would have addressed all the issues Toyota should have... Good car in stock form? Meh. Good car if you spend $30k on it? Yeah. $50k if you want to upgrade to an auto. Overrated? Yes. Overpriced? Hell yes!

What people dont get is that for the price you pay for a 2014 model yes it does lack in some comfort and technology but if you do all the preventitive maintenance to that vehicle, and drive it off road with care in 2054, 30 years after it was produced, it will drive like a brand new car. My kzj70 has 500k km on, and it has always taken me everywhere i need to go, never failed. And it drives better than all of my friends cars that have half its age.

Come check out our Toyota trucks in the US, and you’ll become cultishly attached to the LC70... the solid, reliable, durable trucks are gone from our lineups. The “Tacoma” has toy axles and so much electronic junk, it’s not even in the same category with the LCs. Same with the 4Runner. That LC is dreamy for those who go get it.

I agree with people that question the price, but it’s the last “forever car” on the market. Look at the camper industry, 70k for a hybrid camper, 40k for a slide on? If you’re going to talk about the sum if it’s parts, that’s way more of an outrage than a 70.

these 76's are not for everyone, you either love them or hate them, the rear wheel track to me it is a mind thing more than a engineering problem , i have a 2008 model 79 in standard form for work and a modified 2013 model with the rear track corrected , you hardly notice the difference, if any and i have a 2018 dual cab 79 with the upgrade injectors and gear box and a DPF and rear wheel track corrected, they all perform different , expensive to buy and modify yes but lets talk resale, these Cruisers are a investment.Thanks Cahn

I used to drive those in the desert and I wasn't impressed with the 76 series troop carriers at all. Mitch talks sense and Cahn makes excuses for Toyota. Funny about the width of that rear diff, Toyota just got lazy and couldn't be bothered to change the diff width.

This is a light commercial vehicle which is why it's not loaded with modern interior comforts. Build numbers are comparatively low and the design makes manufacturing less streamlined than say high production volume monocoque chassis vehicles - hence the higher price. Power is balanced for reliability and longevity - it's meant to chug along rather than be fast. In previous vehicles I've owned, auto gearboxes and electronics have been the most likely fail or limitation points. The 76 isn't perfect either - in my opinion rear track correction improved off road driving - some sand conditions in particular. The brake booster upgrade is also worthwhile. GVM upgrade also for touring. If you use it for the intended purpose it just reliably gets the job done - it's boring but that suits me. If you want it to go fast, hold 5th gear on any hill while towing, be luxurious inside and be awesome around town then you will either spend a heap of $ on mods or be disappointed.

The land cruisers were designed by Toyota for the strength and reliability for the outback and remote place’s and at least Toyota still sell a vehicle like this as many other companies stopped 10 years ago Toyota 70 series are now one of the only solid front axels vehicles sold apart from a land-rove or off road truck.

I have a 76 and not sure if has been mentioned already, but (ohhhh and as a mechanic, some of my reasoning was) but 1 of the main reasons I bought mine was, as with any 70 series, they are a dime a dozen, every cow cocky, mine and construction company have them, so when remote, parts are very easy to get and workshops are well versed in fixing them, unlike a lot of vehicles out there where dealerships might not be as accessible in remote areas for repairs.

I've been to over 30 African countries. Some really rough places like DRC and Sierra Leone. Some really bad situations, rain weather, bridge broken, clearing custom delays, elections raucous, each time I've prayed that my Land Cruiser doesn't let down and we get stuck in a really bad spot. And, it's never let me down, any cruiser I've had over last 20 years, 75,79, 80,100,105,200. (I worked in mining) So it's a friend and for me, I'm loyal to my friends. I've only had a Cruiser in my garage since I could afford one (Hilux before that). The question whether it's worth it doesn't matter. There's nothing else. For me or in fact my father, who got his first Land Cruiser in 1978.

I drove these for a living and they are tough as nails but handle like a shopping trolley, no tech, ugly, heavy and not even that powerful until you tune them. I would never in a million years own one unless I owned a station and used it for work every day. Easily most over rated car in Australia.

I agree … the 76 Landcruiser is overpriced compared to other modern day 4x4’s … it’s really a nostalgic thing … and having the V8. If you want a car that feels like a truck, can run for a million kms and doesn’t have creature comforts this is your vehicle. For me … I change cars every 7 - 10 years so the high kms and reliability after 10 years doesn’t matter to me, as I will have bought another vehicle by then. This vehicles requires another $60,000 in modifications to make it a beast … if you want to keep it for 20-30 years it may be worth it … otherwise get another 4x4.

I have a 2018 76 Workmate, it does have the newer seats and updated gearing. Its a tough truck, its not meant to be driven on a road all day, it tows anything with ease and when it reaches 800,000klms it will still be doing exactly the same. One of the reasons I liked it was that it doesn't have all the wank, no carpets, no electric windows, seat warmers etc however I do wish it had central locking. Look at the air con/heater, its basic, practicle and well made, it won't break and it's really you need. However, its a prick on sand as the rear end just wants to swap from onw rut to the other, its really hard work. So I have offset rims on mine now and I have eliminated the problem. Yes I know these are illegal but the car is now safer to drive on sand or in ruts.

A few weeks’ ago I did a 7300km commencing in Melbourne and turning north at Cocklebiddy, WA to head up Connie Sue to Warburton the on to Docker River -Sandy Bight Junction - Alice Springs - Hay River Track - Birdsville - Melbourne. Our fuel consumption was less than some of the Prado in our group and more than others- I carried far to much fuel because I failed to take into account that the engine rarely got above 2000 revs. The car was a star in our group - reliable and tough

The reason for not widening the front track is because Aus is one of the only markets where the V8TD is fitted, in SA the 6 is still used because of fuel contaminates, JPN and UAE have the 4.0V6 petrol. With these engines there is no change to front to rear track width. If your cheap, just use a neg offset rim 😂

As an owner I would never pay 90k + for one. Totally overrated vehicle. Living remotely it is awesome. Such a great bush basher. For long drives on sealed roads though it absolutely sucks. Super uncomfy and revs at 2500rpm at 110. But it does have something special about it though. You do start to love them when you own one. Other cars just don't seem the same when you drive them.

The torque figures aren’t the same, so I’m not sure why it’s common to compare the Triton and 1VD figures. Yes they both make 430nm, the 70 makes that’s at 1,200rpm opposed to 2,500rpm in the Triton. So obviously it’ll feel different.

Why do people always compare engine torque and power between different engines without discussing where the optimum output occurs in the rev range. That's the difference between the toyo v8, usable torque is about 1000 to 2500 rpm. Compare that to a 4 cylinder highly strung engine and you'll find that the max power or torque is outside the desired rpm range for off roading.

Ay the Aussies mentioned us! 😜😂 Fun fact you got the 76 with a 1HZ from 2007 to 2012 in South Africa. In Africa you still get the 1HZ in all the 70s. In SA the 1HZ is available as a option as all the 70s, except the 76 (only V8 since 2013). The troopy (after being absent from the market (2012-2015) was finally available again on special order (since 2021), 1HZ only. For the 79s we have a option of a V6 petrol (1GR-FE), inline 6 diesel (1HZ) & the V8 diesel (1VD-FTV). As they are listed they are ranked in price from less expensive to more expensive. We have a 2010 HZJ76 in our driveway. I never understood what people meant when they say the V8 is underpowered. Cough, 1HZ isn't exactly drowning in power. But I was shocked when my Dad drove one (V8) and he was very underwhelmed. Still would like to test drive one. Hopefully somone can find this interesting to read. Edit: From what I've seen we also missed out on the dual hump bonnet. But you do see a few tricket out 70s with the dual humo and I know of one place that imports them. We also got a very watered down crappy 70th anniversary special edition. Not the same as in Australia or the UAE.

The Triton might have the same torque figure as the LC70, but the Toyota provides the 430Nm from 1200 RPM, while the Mitsubishi needs another 1300 RPM (2500 RPM total) to start generating the same max torque. This suggests, the Toyota's engine is more relax at delivering maximum torque compared to the Mitsubishi. That's probably why Toyota engines have a reputation for durability & longevity compared to its rivals.

I agree. But at the price point they are at the moment, I'm sure a lot of it is the Toyota Tax. You definitely do not buy a 70 Series Landcruiser for value.

That's a fair point but as a comparison the new dmax makes 300nm from 1000rpm and 400nm from 1400rpm, costs less to service, about 30 to 40 percent less to fill is more comfortable and less much likely to leave you or your passengers disabled or dead after a severe accident for half the price, so unless you are a hardcore offroader (which most of us aren't) i just think it's not a rational purchase for the money

@@felixtimlock I get the safety aspect. I'd get the 200 series for the same money in the 2nd hand market. But the Dmax is a Ute. And if you say MU-X, both have IFS. Cahn obviously preferred solid front axle. And if the vehicle is bought for towing, which engine do you think will fair better? A 4 cylinder diesel or a V8 diesel?

@@felixtimlock Totally agree that the 70 Series is not a rational or value purchase. Yet they are selling by the bucket loads and are holding their value well. I just hope when the Ineos Granadier is finally released, this will jolt Toyota into doing something. But then again, being specifically designed as a mine vehicle, not sure they will.

Maybe it will wake Toyota up, it took Hyundai having success with the iload and ford with the Ranger to push them to finally make the investment in R&D on a new hiace and hilux

Love my 76 series. Awesome tourer and so bloody reliable. Solid axles and bush ready. Enough said. I have the updated 2017 and definitely love the new box. Thanks for excellent vid

I’m convinced you can’t make everyone happy. If this was a video about a 200 series, everyone would cry about how they miss the old school basic truck. They made a video about the 70s and everyone cries about how it’s too old fashioned. Damned if you do, and damned if you don’t. Keep making this Toyota. I love the 70 series.

Not overrated, just one of the best from the cruiser series. I personally love the Discontinued FJ Cruiser which was based on the prado J120 series platform.

Wish we could get the V8 Diesel here in Europe, would buy it in a heart beat, yes , i can buy an electronic 4x4, but i can go anywhere with the 76. I own a 70 and 73 already. The best the troop Carrier.

You can get a v8 with a euro 6 conversion. It is about 55/65k base model.

Just throw Neg 25 offset on the front wheels and Pos 25 on the back for a test. (Only for the test) on the beach. That way you can use the same car, switch wheels and back onto the beach.

The tdv8 is purposely made to have a bit power with a big block simply for less stress... Means more reliable. It would maybe do a little better with a 6 speed though

If I could afford one I’d buy one too! I agree, I do love the simplicity and basic layout. Then you can focus more on the actual wheeling and camping rather than the gadgets! I also wouldn’t mind a brand new 90s Hilux! Cheers Cahn

Yes a way lower 5th gear is a must to keep the RPM under 2000 on highway at 120kmph

120 is not advisable for a vehicle like this. 100 kph max and maybe a little more for overtaking when needed.
