Great analysis Paul ! I was involved with vehicle maintenance for a fleet that was run in the Pilbara in Western Australia The bearing diagnosis was exactly what we dealt with The pivot bearing wear ( the striping) was exactly what we found after heaps of corrugated roads We changed the pivot hub bearings at around 50k on our vehicles

I always enjoy Paul's explanations of the wear and tear on the components and the choices when it comes to whether to replace, or keep them going. I have a Hilux D4-D with 450 000km (still going strong), so this really informative. I'll probably have to send it to Paul sooner or later for a thorough inspection, as I want to keep it for a while still.

Molybdenum grease will not affect case hardened surfaces of the crown wheel or pinion they are the same as the bearing surfaces in the CV joints and wheel bearings. He has stated this in two videos and needs to check the wear characteristics of case hardened surfaces neither wheel bearings or differential components are adversely affected by this grease.

I was really surprised that the stub axle on the Toyota doesn't unbolt. On a Land Rover it can be changed easily and relatively cheaply

Yup. LR got this part of the axle design right. Bearings last longer, easy to swap out a hub, change a half-shaft, etc.

Paul, Why not putting a 1mm race ring over the shaft for the seal? That will solve the groove on the seal contact area.. 5.- AUD a piece. Plus bearing Loctite with cleaner and activator 25.- AUD a set Cheers

@bogged2theeyeballs695 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Not an uncommon repair. But without trying to sound cynical, there is less time and therefore less money in replacing the housing. If I ever get to the point of replacing a rear housing I would make the effort to change it to a Nissan Patrol GU. They are stronger and the stub axles bolt on and can easily be replaced. This is from a Landcruiser owner.

Paul mentioned the option of using a SKF speedi-sleeve. He also mentioned taking into account wear on the area where the inner bearing cup runs. Plus he mentioned Loctite to retain the bearing cups. Dare say that Paul has had to sort out one or two Landcruisers in his time, some reasonable, many absolutely stuffed - in all, many more than I have. I will give him credit for knowing what he is doing. Retired mechanic/machinist in Land Down Under.

I do not know how it is in South Africa. Over here in Germany all the „we look if this and that is in which condition“ is the most expensive part. Way more then simply change the parts. If some parts are open like here, i change all what could, because the work till this point was so expensive that it couldn’t be that much more money anymore 😅

What about poly bushings? I see a lot of people replacing bushings with poly bushings. Would they also cause that stress fracturing as seen on the shock strut?
@4xoverland

Maybe. But probably not. It was likely a broken shock absorber that caused it.

I change all hoses at 10 years no matter their condition. And my aircraft, every 5 years no matter their condition. The Range Rover hose that failed on Canning was in 'perfect' condition. Yet it split. Because it was old. There was no corrosion in that cooling system. At 23 years, your hoses are waiting to go. Its unavoidable. The rubber deteriorates from the inside.

Although I like this type of ASPW video, the replies to this comment I think are a bit over the top, and better reserved for nastier comments. Maybe some other viewers would agree with GZ. This channel did have a similar topic a few years back, but I personally love this content because you can learn so much, and Paul is indeed a great teacher. Give me this topic any day rather than e.g. "Friends crossing the Canning" (which I lost interest in quickly). But you can't please all people all of the time.
